Microsoft Chief Marketing Officer Chris Capossela and his wife, Leigh Toner, were named co-chairs of United Way of King County’s 2019 fundraising campaign, GeekWire reported on September 12, 2019. They set a $41 million goal to support work on homelessness and education in King County. The campaign is historical; the report does not state whether it reached that goal.
What the campaign aimed to raise
GeekWire reported that the 2019 campaign goal was $41 million, compared with more than $36 million raised in the preceding fundraising year. Those figures describe the goal and the prior-year result, not the final total for the 2019 campaign.
The report framed the effort around homelessness and education in King County, with Home Base and Bridge to Finish among the programs it highlighted.
Programs highlighted in the 2019 report
Home Base and housing support
GeekWire described Home Base as a United Way program helping people who struggle to pay rent avoid eviction and homelessness. The article also said Microsoft had announced a $500 million commitment for affordable housing in the Seattle region, with $5 million directed to Home Base. These are figures reported in 2019, not current funding totals.

Bridge to Finish and education
Bridge to Finish helps students access services and support to complete their education and launch careers, with a focus on underserved groups, according to the article. It began in 2017 on four campuses and supported 400 students. By the time of GeekWire’s 2019 report, the program operated on nine campuses and had a stated goal of helping 4,000 students graduate that year. These are historical program figures and goals, not evidence of later outcomes.
Microsoft’s role in the campaign
Capossela’s appointment continued a history of Microsoft leaders chairing the King County campaign. GeekWire named Jeff and Tricia Raikes as chairs in 2006–2007, and Microsoft President Brad Smith and his wife, Kathy Surace-Smith, as chairs in 2010–2011. The outgoing co-chairs in 2019 were GeekWire Chairman Jonathan Sposato and Heather Lowenthal.

The report also said that more than 1,300 Microsoft employees participated in United Way’s Emerging Leaders program, which connects young professionals in the region. It reported that more than 10,500 people took part in the previous year’s Day of Caring, representing more than $1 million in volunteer labor. Both figures are historical snapshots reported in 2019.
What Capossela said about taking the role
In GeekWire’s interview, Capossela said, “There is no single way to support people who are the most in need.” He also stated that an average of 95 cents of every donated dollar went toward building a stronger community. That was his statement in the 2019 article, not an independently verified or current figure.

GeekWire’s September 12, 2019 report establishes the co-chairs, the campaign goal, and the programs and participation figures it attributed to United Way or Microsoft. It does not give the final 2019 fundraising total, so it cannot establish whether the campaign met its $41 million goal. Nor do the article’s historical program descriptions establish how those programs operate today.
