The best available public estimate puts Xbox Series X|S sales at about 29 million at most through November 2024—not as a confirmed Microsoft count, and not as a current total. Microsoft’s FY2026 reporting does not disclose how many Series X|S consoles it has sold cumulatively, so the total as of October 2026 is not established by the cited sources.
How many Xbox Series X|S consoles has Microsoft sold?
Microsoft has not published a cumulative Xbox Series X|S unit total in the FY2026 reporting cited here. The widely reported estimate of fewer than 30 million is an inference based on a combined PlayStation 5 and Xbox sales estimate, not a figure reported by Microsoft.
Where the under-30-million estimate comes from
-
Pure Xbox reported in February 2025 that Take-Two Interactive’s latest financial report put combined PS5 and Xbox Series X|S sales above 94 million through November 2024.
-
Paul Thurrott’s February 9, 2025 calculation used Sony’s reported 65.5 million PS5 consoles through September 30, 2024.

Subtracting the PS5 figure from the combined total implies roughly 29 million Xbox Series X|S consoles at most. Thurrott described the result as “at best, about 29 million.”
This is not a precise subtraction of figures measured on the same date: the combined total runs through November 2024, while the PS5 count runs through September 30. The estimate is also not a direct Xbox unit count. Treat it as a rough, mixed-date estimate anchored to late 2024, rather than an audited Microsoft figure.

Why Microsoft’s latest hardware disclosure does not update the unit estimate
Microsoft’s FY2026 Form 10-K says Xbox hardware revenue decreased 29%, driven by lower console volume. The filing’s revenue trend and volume description do not state lifetime Series X|S units sold and cannot be converted into a cumulative console total. Revenue can change for reasons that do not reveal how many units sold, including pricing and product mix.
Accordingly, the late-2024 estimate should not be presented as Microsoft’s October 2026 sales total. The cited public evidence does not establish how many consoles sold after its November 2024 cutoff.

What the estimate does—and does not—tell buyers and investors
“Fewer than 30 million” is useful as a qualified historical estimate, but it does not establish an exact installed base, current demand, or the number of consoles Microsoft has sold to consumers by a later date. The available figures do not provide competing official Xbox totals to reconcile.
For context, game-sales figures are not console-sales figures: Electronic Arts reported that 78% of its total Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4, and PS5 game units sold digitally in FY2025. That measure concerns digital game distribution across four console families, not how many Xbox Series X|S consoles were sold.
