It is one cloud region with three availability zones—not three newly launched regions. Separately, a Microsoft fact sheet published in October 2025 said the company was building three physical datacenters in the greater Hyderabad area.
What did Microsoft launch in India?
Microsoft launched India South Central, a cloud region located in Hyderabad, Telangana. Customers can run eligible Microsoft Cloud services and workloads there. Microsoft’s September 21, 2026 update confirmed the region is live and described it as part of the company’s expanding AI infrastructure in India.
The launch makes India South Central Microsoft’s fourth cloud region in the country. The other regions are Central India in Pune, South India in Chennai, and West India in Mumbai. Microsoft also separately reports two datacenters operated with Jio: Jio India West and Jio India Central. These are distinct footprint counts, not additional Microsoft cloud regions. Microsoft’s August 6, 2026 launch announcement lists the regions and Jio-operated datacenters.
Why the “three datacenters” wording can be confusing
A cloud region is a geographic area where cloud services are offered. An availability zone is an isolated location within a region, designed to support resilience. India South Central is one region designed with three availability zones.

Microsoft’s October 2025 fact sheet used a different “three” description: it said the company was building three datacenter facilities in greater Hyderabad. Those physical facilities are not three separate cloud regions. Microsoft does not establish in the cited launch announcement that each facility maps one-to-one to an availability zone, so those terms should not be treated as interchangeable. Microsoft’s October 2025 datacenters fact sheet describes the construction plans.
Which Azure and AI services are available?
The region launched with a broad portfolio of Azure services, but availability is not universal. Microsoft says the region is designed to support its full Azure and AI portfolio over time, with additional capabilities rolling out in the coming months. Microsoft Foundry is among the named capabilities in that planned expansion; the September update does not say every capability is already live.

Check the current availability of the particular service and feature you need before designing or moving a workload. Eligibility can vary by service and workload, so the existence of a live region alone does not establish that every Azure product can run there. See Microsoft’s September 21, 2026 infrastructure update for its description of the staged rollout.
What does the region mean for data location and compliance?
Local cloud capacity and data-residency choices can help organizations address applicable legal, sector-specific, and operational requirements. They do not automatically make a customer’s workload compliant. Microsoft says customers remain responsible for identifying and meeting the requirements that apply to their use of the services.

Microsoft’s descriptions of the region as sovereign-ready or aligned with guidelines should be read as statements about capabilities intended to help customers—not as a blanket compliance guarantee.
How the Hyderabad project developed
Microsoft announced its intent to establish a Hyderabad datacenter region in March 2022, describing it then as an addition to existing regions in Pune, Mumbai, and Chennai. General availability followed on August 6, 2026. The gap between announcement and launch reflects the project’s progression from stated intent to an operating cloud region; it does not mean that three regions launched together. Microsoft’s 2022 announcement records the original plan.

Investment commitments
In December 2025, Microsoft announced a US$17.5 billion investment commitment for India over calendar years 2026–2029, building on a US$3 billion commitment announced earlier in 2025. In its September 2026 update, Microsoft described its combined India commitment as US$20.5 billion. These are company-announced commitments, not audited amounts already spent. The dated December 9, 2025 investment announcement and September 2026 update describe the figures.
Construction estimates
Microsoft’s October 2025 fact sheet estimated approximately 22.4 million construction work hours and more than 5,490 jobs at peak activity for the new greater-Hyderabad datacenters. The fact sheet says its estimates and projections may change without notice; the figures are not a report of realized or independently verified totals.

Cooling and groundwater recharge
Microsoft says the Hyderabad region uses enhanced mechanical cooling that consumes zero or effectively zero water for cooling. That claim is limited to cooling; it does not establish that the entire facility uses no water. Microsoft also reported that its Elikatta groundwater-recharge program had added approximately 5 million liters of recharge capacity by June 2026. Both claims are described in the launch announcement and the September update.

A region’s location alone is not enough to determine whether it is the right place for a personal or business workload. Evaluate the details that affect your users, systems, and obligations:
- Service availability: Confirm that each required Azure service and feature is available in India South Central.
- Latency: Consider where your users and connected systems are located, and measure performance for your own use case.
- Data location: Check the service-specific options and requirements for storing and processing data.
- Resilience: Plan for the failures your workload must withstand; a three-zone design does not replace a deliberate backup and disaster-recovery plan.
- Compliance and operations: Identify applicable controls and responsibilities rather than relying on regional availability as proof of compliance.
- Cost and capacity: Check current service-specific pricing and availability when planning. Microsoft’s launch announcement does not provide a like-for-like price or service matrix across India’s regions.
Market context
Microsoft’s August 2026 announcement cited an IDC forecast, attributed to Dr. William Lee, IDC senior research director, that Indian public-cloud services spending would reach US$45.7 billion by 2030, growing at 22.2% annually, with AI spending growing at double that rate. This is a forecast cited by Microsoft, not a realized spending total.
