Microsoft Ignite 2024 brought together two different endpoint ideas—commercial Copilot+ PCs that run some AI tasks locally and Windows 365 Link, a device designed to connect users to cloud-hosted Windows desktops. Its security announcements focused on managing exposure, protecting data used with AI, and encouraging security research. The details below reflect Microsoft’s November 2024 announcements; announced previews and launch plans should not be read as confirmation of current availability.

What were the biggest device announcements?

The main device news was Windows 365 Link, alongside new capabilities Microsoft described for commercial Copilot+ PCs. They address different needs: Link is a cloud-PC endpoint, while Copilot+ PCs are local computers with NPUs for on-device AI processing.

Windows 365 Link: a dedicated endpoint for Cloud PCs

Microsoft presented Windows 365 Link as a device purpose-built to connect securely to Windows 365. Users access a Windows desktop hosted in Microsoft’s cloud; Microsoft said the Link itself has no local data or apps. The concept is to keep corporate work in the cloud rather than store it on the endpoint.

In its November 2024 announcement, Microsoft said the device was in preview and planned to begin purchase availability in select markets in April 2025, with an announcement-era MSRP of $349. These were plans and pricing stated at the time, not confirmation of current stock, market coverage, or price. See Microsoft’s Ignite 2024 announcement.

Intune’s event post said administrators could manage Link alongside other devices, including familiar actions such as restart and remote wipe, with a limited set of applicable configuration policies. That describes management integration, not a complete list of device controls or a comparative security assessment.

For organizations weighing this approach, the useful questions are where work data resides, what employees need when offline, which management controls apply, and whether Link is available in the relevant market. Microsoft’s announcement does not provide an independent head-to-head performance or security test against conventional PCs.

Commercial Copilot+ PCs: local AI and a Recall preview

Microsoft described new capabilities for commercial Copilot+ PCs, including use of built-in NPUs for local AI processing, improved Windows Search, and a new Recall experience in preview. These were announcement-era feature descriptions; they do not establish the current rollout status or independently validate performance. Surface promoted demonstrations and application-development labs at Ignite, but that event material is not evidence that Microsoft launched a new Surface model there.

What security capabilities did Microsoft announce?

Security Exposure Management reached general availability

Microsoft said Security Exposure Management became generally available. The company described it as a unified view of an organization’s cyberattack surface, attack paths, and critical assets. Its approach connects relationships among identities, files, and devices rather than treating each asset as an isolated entry in a list.

Microsoft Security Fellow and Deputy Chief Information Security Officer John Lambert put the idea this way: “Defenders think in lists, cyberattackers think in graphs. As long as this is true, attackers win.” The quote reflects Microsoft’s rationale for understanding how assets and permissions relate; it is not evidence by itself of a measured security outcome.

Purview previews addressed data risks from AI use

Microsoft said several Purview capabilities were available for preview at the time of its November 2024 post. They included Data Loss Prevention for Microsoft 365 Copilot, ways to prevent oversharing in AI apps, and detection of risky AI use, including malicious intent, prompt injection, and misuse of protected materials.

Microsoft also described Data Security Posture Management as a way to surface risks such as sensitive information in user prompts and offer recommended responses. Together, these announcements address governance questions that arise as organizations adopt AI tools: what information users can submit, what may be overshared, and how risky activity can be detected. The preview label is important; the announcement alone does not confirm the features’ present availability or configuration requirements. Details are in the Microsoft Security Blog announcement.

Zero Day Quest offered potential rewards for research

Microsoft announced Zero Day Quest, a public security research event focused on AI and cloud security, with $4 million in potential additional rewards. “Potential” matters: the figure was a reward opportunity, not money already paid. Microsoft also reported that its existing bug bounty program had awarded over $16 million in the prior year.

In the same announcement, Microsoft reported more than 7,000 password attacks per second, up from 579 three years earlier. Those are figures reported by Microsoft, not independently validated measurements in the materials cited here.

How did Ignite connect device announcements to IT operations?

Microsoft Intune’s Ignite update linked the device news to endpoint administration. It covered device actions, Security Copilot capabilities connected to Intune, Endpoint Privilege Management, and ARM64 support. Microsoft said new device actions would become generally available in November 2024; that was the announced timing, not verification of their subsequent rollout. The post also described Windows 365 Link as manageable through Intune. See Microsoft Intune’s Ignite update.

The wider context was Microsoft’s Secure Future Initiative (SFI). In its November 2024 update, Microsoft said the equivalent of 34,000 engineers were dedicated to advancing the initiative. It also outlined customer guidance themes: reduce credential risk, secure production devices, limit excessive permissions, maintain asset inventories, follow security baselines, and centralize standard audit logging. These points frame Microsoft’s security priorities; they do not establish a quantified outcome for the Ignite products.

How to interpret the announcements

  • For endpoint choice: distinguish a cloud-connected Windows 365 endpoint from a local Copilot+ PC. Consider data location, offline needs, management controls, and actual availability in your market.
  • For AI governance: the Purview announcements were aimed at information protection and risky use, not just model capability. Treat their November 2024 preview status as historical until current product documentation confirms otherwise.
  • For security posture: Exposure Management emphasized relationships and attack paths across assets, while Zero Day Quest was an external research initiative. Neither announcement is an independent comparative test of security effectiveness.

Microsoft’s event-wide count was upwards of 80 products and features, according to its Partner Community post; that figure covered Ignite announcements broadly, not just devices or security. The central device-and-security story is narrower: cloud and local endpoint options, AI data controls, exposure visibility, and security research.
