Microsoft’s Copilot Checkout lets some U.S. shoppers buy eligible products without leaving a Copilot conversation. The rollout began on January 8, 2026, on Copilot.com, but this is not a universal way to buy anything through Copilot: access depends on the shopper, merchant, product and checkout flow. Microsoft describes the merchant program as a pilot for select customers.
What Copilot Checkout does
Copilot Checkout adds an in-chat checkout layer to product discovery. It goes beyond showing product links: in supported cases, a shopper can ask for recommendations, compare products and complete a purchase in Copilot. The merchant’s existing commerce and payment systems still handle the transaction. Microsoft’s launch screens were simulated, and the company says actual results vary with merchant and item availability.
How a purchase works
- The shopper asks Copilot for product recommendations.
- Copilot presents products from participating merchants. The shopper can ask follow-up questions or compare options.
- If the merchant and item support the flow, Copilot presents checkout in the conversation.
- The merchant’s commerce and payment infrastructure processes the order.
- The merchant handles fulfillment, customer service and returns.
A product card or recommendation is not a guarantee that an item is in stock or eligible for in-chat checkout.
Where it is available—and where it is not
Microsoft announced the initial U.S. rollout on Copilot.com on January 8, 2026. It said the experience would expand across Bing, MSN and Microsoft Edge, but an announced expansion is not confirmation that checkout is available to every user on every surface. Microsoft’s merchant guidance describes the program as a pilot for select customers, limited to English-language merchants selling to U.S. buyers in U.S. dollars. The current evidence does not establish worldwide availability.

For an individual shopper, availability depends on more than location: the merchant must participate, the product must be eligible and available, and the conversation must connect to a supported checkout flow. If checkout does not appear, the shopper may need to visit the retailer’s site instead.
Which merchants and payment services are involved?
Microsoft named Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Ashley Furniture and Etsy sellers among early participants, alongside Shopify merchants through Shopify’s integration. Stripe separately confirmed a Stripe-powered Copilot checkout for U.S. users buying from Etsy businesses, Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie. In April 2026, Microsoft identified Target as an early partner for account linking, including Target Circle benefits such as discounts and free shipping at checkout. These examples do not mean every product from those merchants is available through Copilot.
Shopify
Microsoft says Shopify merchants are automatically enrolled after an opt-out window and can manage Copilot Checkout through Shopify administration. Enrollment does not guarantee that every store or product is immediately discoverable or checkout-enabled; merchant feeds, item availability and eligibility still matter.

Stripe
Stripe says it helps power Copilot Checkout and connects sellers using the Agentic Commerce Protocol. Its Agentic Commerce Suite is intended to support product discovery, checkout, payments and fraud-related services. The cited announcements do not specify a Copilot-specific price.
PayPal
PayPal is another merchant onboarding route. Microsoft describes non-Shopify merchants as able to apply through PayPal or Stripe, with Microsoft Merchant Center involved. PayPal’s participation does not mean shoppers must use a PayPal account for every purchase: available payment methods depend on the merchant’s implementation and checkout.
What the merchant-of-record model means for shoppers
Microsoft says the participating merchant remains the merchant of record. In practical terms, Microsoft is not described as buying inventory and reselling it under its own name. The merchant remains responsible for the sale, applicable taxes, payment and fraud processes, shipping, fulfillment, returns, refunds, customer service and order records. The shopper may not see the retailer’s ordinary website during checkout, but the merchant remains the party to contact about the order.

Microsoft also says merchants retain the customer relationship and transaction data. That is Microsoft’s description of its model, not an independent audit of every data flow. Microsoft’s merchant guidance currently says it charges no commission or affiliate fee on Copilot Checkout transactions. That statement is subject to change and does not remove payment-processing, platform, fulfillment, returns, fraud or integration costs for a merchant.
What to check before paying
Conversational shopping can save navigation steps, but a natural-language exchange can misunderstand a request, and product details may change between recommendation and checkout. Review the active checkout—not an earlier chat message—before authorizing payment.

- Check the final price, taxes, shipping charge, delivery estimate and any promotion in checkout.
- Read the merchant’s return, refund, warranty and subscription terms, especially for high-value or customized items.
- Verify the shipping address and delivery method before placing the order.
- Save the order confirmation and use the merchant’s support or returns process if the shipment is late, damaged or incorrect.
The checkout price and terms confirmed by the merchant’s commerce system are more authoritative than an earlier conversational statement. Return deadlines, charges and refund timing remain merchant-specific.

How payment, privacy and trust fit together
An in-chat purchase involves several distinct systems: Copilot’s conversation and product discovery, the merchant’s catalog and order records, and the payment provider’s payment processing. The available information does not establish every detail of what is passed among them for every integration, so shoppers should not assume that one party handles all data—or that payment credentials are invisible to every system involved.
Stripe says its agentic-commerce work uses payment infrastructure designed to let agents initiate transactions without directly exposing payment credentials. That is Stripe’s description of its approach, not a guarantee about every Copilot payment path. Microsoft’s claim that merchants retain customer data likewise does not by itself describe Microsoft’s product-discovery or platform telemetry. Check the merchant and payment provider’s terms, and verify the seller and order details before confirming a purchase.
What merchants need to assess
For merchants, Copilot Checkout is a potential discovery and conversion channel whose conversational surface Microsoft controls. Microsoft says onboarding requires a product feed through Microsoft Merchant Center; non-Shopify sellers can apply through PayPal or Stripe. Before joining, a merchant should assess whether its operations and data are ready for agent-mediated orders.

- Market and onboarding: Confirm U.S.-buyer, English-language and USD eligibility, Merchant Center enrollment and the relevant Shopify, PayPal or Stripe route.
- Catalog quality: Keep titles, images, descriptions, identifiers, variants, prices and availability accurate. Structured warnings, return policies and support information also matter to product presentation and eligibility.
- Order operations: Ensure systems can validate price, inventory, shipping, taxes and promotions, and that teams can manage fulfillment, refunds, fraud, customer support and order reconciliation.
- Measurement and control: Determine how to attribute Copilot-originated sales, represent brand and policy information correctly, and handle a fallback to the merchant site when Copilot cannot finish a purchase.
- Economics and fit: Microsoft’s stated lack of a current commission does not settle payment, platform, support or integration costs. The channel may be less suitable when products require extensive configuration or education, inventory changes faster than feeds can update, or the retailer depends on its own merchandising experience.
Microsoft says product feeds inform Copilot discovery, but accurate feeds alone do not guarantee placement or checkout eligibility. Merchants should also decide whether they are comfortable with product discovery and recommendations taking place in Microsoft’s interface rather than solely on their own site.

Copilot Checkout is a shopper-facing purchase flow inside Microsoft’s Copilot ecosystem. A Brand Agent is an assistant intended to operate on a retailer’s own website, answer product questions, recommend items and help shoppers buy within the retailer’s branded experience. Microsoft described Brand Agents as available to Shopify merchants through Microsoft Clarity-related onboarding and early-access mechanisms. The two products address different surfaces: external discovery through Copilot versus assistance on the retailer’s site. A merchant could consider both, but they are not interchangeable.
How it compares with ordinary shopping
The main consumer advantage is fewer tabs and redirects: shoppers can use natural-language questions to discover and compare products, then move to checkout in the same conversation when supported. That convenience also puts more weight on the assistant’s interpretation and the accuracy and completeness of its product information. Shoppers may have less direct exposure to a retailer’s full selection, reviews, warranty terms, shipping choices and loyalty experience, and may find it harder to tell how results were ranked or whether a placement is sponsored.
Microsoft has cited internal data from August 2025 saying journeys involving Copilot produced 53% more purchases within 30 minutes, and journeys with shopping intent were 194% more likely to result in a purchase. Those are Microsoft-reported figures, not independent research or a guarantee of results for shoppers or merchants using Copilot Checkout.

Copilot is part of a broader move toward conversational commerce, alongside offerings from OpenAI, Google, Amazon and retailers themselves. Those services differ in inventory, checkout, fulfillment and merchant arrangements; the existence of similar shopping features does not establish feature parity. Copilot’s approach combines a general-purpose assistant and Microsoft discovery surfaces with merchant and payment-provider integrations, rather than making Microsoft the retailer.
Enterprise retail tools are a separate layer
Microsoft also describes broader retail-agent infrastructure, including a Dynamics 365 Commerce MCP Server listed as preview technology. It is intended to let agents work with commerce capabilities such as catalog, pricing, promotions, inventory, carts, orders and fulfillment. This is enterprise-facing infrastructure, not the same thing as the consumer Copilot Checkout flow, and its preview status should not be read as a guarantee of production availability.
