Microsoft’s “year of the Windows 11 PC refresh” was both a real technology transition and a sales message. The company used Windows 10’s end of support, newer security requirements, and the arrival of Copilot+ PCs to encourage upgrades and new purchases. But most users did not automatically need to buy a new computer: an eligible Windows 10 PC could move to Windows 11, while other users had temporary alternatives such as Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) or Windows 365.

What Microsoft announced at CES 2025

On January 6, 2025, Microsoft Executive Vice President Yusuf Mehdi published a Windows Experience Blog post titled “CES 2025: The year of the Windows 11 PC refresh.” The phrase was Microsoft’s framing, not an independent designation for the entire PC industry.

Microsoft argued that a major replacement cycle was forming around four developments:

  • Windows 10 support ending on October 14, 2025.
  • Windows 11’s newer security baseline.
  • New processors from Qualcomm, AMD, and Intel.
  • Copilot+ PCs with hardware designed for local artificial-intelligence workloads.

The company also emphasized expected improvements in performance, battery life, and on-device AI. Its CES ecosystem included PC makers such as Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, ASUS, Samsung, and Microsoft Surface, alongside chip and graphics companies including Qualcomm, AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA. Microsoft’s CES partner page provides an overview of the devices and announcements it highlighted.

Why Windows 10 made 2025 financially important

Windows 10 launched in July 2015, and Microsoft had set October 14, 2025, as the end of normal support for the operating system. After that date, ordinary Windows 10 security and feature updates and technical support ended, subject to separate programs such as ESU.

That deadline created a genuine reason for households and organizations to review their hardware. A PC that could not meet Windows 11’s requirements was no longer simply waiting for a routine operating-system upgrade. Its owner had to weigh the cost of replacement against the security and support risks of keeping it.

However, unsupported does not mean unusable. Windows 10 computers continue to operate after the deadline, but without regular security updates they can become more exposed to newly discovered threats. Microsoft’s transition guidance described moving to Windows 11, using ESU, or considering Windows 365 as possible paths.

Did users have to buy a new PC?

No. The correct answer depends on the computer’s compatibility, condition, and intended use.

1. The existing PC passes Windows 11 checks

An eligible Windows 10 computer could generally be upgraded to Windows 11 without purchasing new hardware. Check the current requirements on Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications page and use the PC Health Check app.

Compatibility is not determined by age alone. Windows 11 requirements include processor eligibility, firmware settings, and TPM 2.0. Some computers have TPM hardware that is disabled in firmware, but enabling it does not guarantee that the processor and every other requirement will pass.

If the computer is reliable, fast enough for its workload, and has adequate memory and storage, upgrading the existing device is usually the most economical option. It avoids the purchase price, setup time, data migration, and electronic waste associated with replacement.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

2. The existing PC fails Windows 11 checks

An ineligible computer can remain functional, but the owner must manage the security risk and eventual replacement cost. Options include buying a supported Windows 11 PC, enrolling in Windows 10 ESU where eligible, installing another operating system where software and hardware support permit, or shifting selected workloads to cloud services.

Unofficial Windows 11 installation workarounds are not equivalent to a supported upgrade. They may create update, driver, security, reliability, or technical-support problems. A low-cost workaround can therefore become expensive if the machine is used for banking, business, confidential data, or other sensitive activity.

3. The buyer specifically wants local AI

A new Copilot+ PC may make sense for someone who wants supported on-device AI features, newer battery-efficient processors, or a thin-and-light design. But AI capability alone is not a universal reason to replace a functioning computer. Buyers should compare the actual features they will use with the premium charged for the hardware.

Windows 11, AI PC, and Copilot+ PC are different terms

These labels are often used together, but they do not mean the same thing:

Term Meaning
Windows 11 Microsoft’s operating system.
AI PC A broad industry term that may describe a computer with an NPU or other AI acceleration.
Copilot+ PC A Microsoft hardware category with platform requirements intended to support specified local AI features.

Microsoft said the Copilot+ category began with Qualcomm Snapdragon X systems and expanded to AMD Ryzen AI and Intel Core Ultra processors. Eligibility and feature support still depend on the exact processor, NPU capability, Windows version, drivers, firmware, language, region, and rollout schedule. Microsoft’s original CES post described some capabilities as initially going to Windows Insider users before broader availability.

In practical terms, an ordinary Windows 11 laptop may be entirely sufficient for web browsing, office work, email, video calls, and household finances. A Copilot+ label should be treated as a feature and hardware consideration, not as a synonym for “better computer” in every workload.

How to read Microsoft’s performance claims

Microsoft said Copilot+ PCs could be up to five times faster than the most popular five-year-old Windows PCs still in use. It also said top models could be up to 58% faster than a MacBook Air with an M3 processor.

Those figures were Microsoft’s claims, based on Cinebench 2024 multi-core benchmarking, and should not be interpreted as universal performance guarantees. Results can change substantially with the exact processor, memory and storage configuration, cooling design, power setting, comparison computer, operating system, and application.

“Up to” comparisons describe a best-case result in a defined test. They do not tell a household how much faster its own applications will run, or whether the difference justifies replacing a working PC. Buyers should prioritize workload-specific reviews and independent testing when performance is the main reason for spending money.

What security improvements did Microsoft emphasize?

Microsoft positioned Windows 11 and newer hardware as a stronger security baseline. The company highlighted:

  • TPM 2.0 for hardware-backed security functions.
  • Virtualization-based security.
  • Smart App Control.
  • Secured-core PC capabilities.
  • Microsoft Pluton security technology on supported systems.

Microsoft’s transition guidance described TPM 2.0, virtualization-based security, and Smart App Control as Windows 11 security features enabled by default in its stated configuration. These technologies can make some attacks harder, but they do not make a computer immune to malware, phishing, account theft, unsafe downloads, or weak passwords. Security updates, multifactor authentication, backups, and cautious behavior remain important.

Who actually needed a refresh?

  • Owners of incompatible Windows 10 hardware: They faced the clearest replacement decision if they wanted a fully supported Windows environment.
  • Owners of old or failing PCs: A refresh could be justified by poor battery life, slow storage, hardware failures, missing ports, or repair costs even if Windows 11 compatibility was not the immediate issue.
  • Businesses: Organizations had to consider application compatibility, device management, deployment, warranty coverage, data migration, security baselines, and regulatory requirements.
  • AI-focused buyers: Copilot+ hardware could be worthwhile when local AI features or newer mobile processors addressed a real need.
  • Users with adequate compatible PCs: They could often upgrade the operating system instead of buying a replacement.

Alternatives to buying immediately

Upgrade to Windows 11

For a compatible PC, this is generally the first option to investigate. Confirm requirements, back up important files, check application and peripheral compatibility, and follow Microsoft’s installation guidance.

Use Windows 10 Extended Security Updates

ESU can serve as a temporary bridge for eligible users who need more time. Microsoft’s June 2026 update said personal-device coverage extends through October 12, 2027, but enrollment requirements, availability, and terms should be confirmed in Microsoft’s current ESU documentation.

ESU is not normal long-term Windows 10 support. It does not restore regular feature development or solve aging hardware, application compatibility, or reliability problems.

Consider Windows 365

Windows 365 provides cloud-hosted Windows desktops and may help organizations avoid replacing every local device at once. It requires reliable internet access and recurring subscription spending, and it may be a poor fit for offline work, latency-sensitive applications, specialist peripherals, or strict data-governance requirements.

Use another operating system

Installing another operating system can extend a computer’s useful life, but compatibility varies. Check support for required applications, printers, scanners, games, security tools, and business systems before treating this as a low-cost solution.

What happened to Microsoft’s “refresh year” prediction?

As of September 2026, the phrase is best understood retrospectively. Microsoft identified a real structural catalyst—the Windows 10 support deadline—and paired it with a new generation of processors and NPUs. That combination gave manufacturers a reason to promote replacement PCs and gave customers a reason to review aging machines.

But Microsoft’s statement did not prove that every user needed a new device or that the entire market refreshed at the rates it predicted. Microsoft cited a June 2024 IDC forecast that nearly 80% of businesses planned to refresh their PC portfolios by the end of 2025 and that 70% of consumers planned to refresh within two years. Those were forecasts presented by Microsoft, not final measured results.

Microsoft also said Windows powered more than 1.4 billion monthly active devices in its June 2025 guidance. That is a Microsoft-reported figure whose methodology was not explained in the cited post, so it should not be treated as an independently audited market total.

A practical buying and upgrade checklist

  1. Check Windows 11 eligibility with Microsoft’s current requirements and PC Health Check.
  2. Separate security needs from feature wants. You may need supported Windows, but not necessarily Copilot+ AI.
  3. Assess the workload. Compare CPU, GPU, NPU, RAM, storage, and battery requirements for the applications you actually use.
  4. Check compatibility. Verify specialist software, games, printers, docks, scanners, and other peripherals.
  5. Compare the full cost. Include accessories, warranty, support, migration time, subscriptions, and possible repairs.
  6. For business purchases, evaluate lifecycle support. Consider manageability, deployment tools, repairability, warranty, docking, and compliance.
  7. Do not overpay for unused AI features. A standard Windows 11 PC may provide better value for ordinary productivity.

For current hardware, software, and lifecycle details, consult Microsoft’s Windows 10 lifecycle information, the Copilot+ PC overview, and the manufacturer’s exact product configuration rather than relying only on the category label.
