Customers could already connect the services through Yammer Web Parts and Yammer Open Graph, while Microsoft planned deeper integration around identity, documents, and activity feeds. The company also cut Yammer Enterprise pricing from $15 to $3 per user per month and planned to include it with qualifying SharePoint Online and Office 365 Enterprise plans.
What Microsoft announced
The announcement was made at SharePoint Conference 2012 in Las Vegas. Microsoft published its “Putting Social to Work” announcement on November 12, 2012, shortly after agreeing on June 25 to acquire Yammer for $1.2 billion in cash.

The acquisition gave Microsoft two complementary collaboration products: SharePoint, centered on managed content and documents, and Yammer, centered on people, conversations, and enterprise social networking. The conference was an opportunity to explain how the products would fit together.

- Yammer Web Parts: components that could place Yammer activity and conversations into SharePoint pages.
- Yammer Open Graph: a framework for associating social activity with business objects such as documents, records, and application data.
The conference demonstrations showed SharePoint documents being posted into Yammer, appearing in Yammer search, and becoming associated with conversations and activity. These connection points were real capabilities, but they did not mean that the two products already shared one identity system, one permission model, one search index, or one document lifecycle.
Microsoft’s own announcement and the conference keynote transcript distinguished existing integration mechanisms from work that was still being developed.
The three-part integration roadmap
1. Unified identity
Microsoft planned foundational work to make Yammer, SharePoint, and Office 365 feel more connected through smoother single sign-on and directory synchronization.
This was a stated investment area, not a completed identity architecture delivered at the conference. Organizations therefore could not assume that every account, group, directory attribute, or administrative control was already unified.
2. Integrated document management
Microsoft positioned SharePoint as the document-centric system and Yammer as the conversation-centric system. The intended experience would let users discuss and share SharePoint-managed files in Yammer without turning Yammer into a replacement for SharePoint’s content-management functions.

The keynote previewed workflows in which users could select files from SkyDrive Pro while working in Yammer. That preview illustrated the direction of the product strategy, but it should not be confused with a fully delivered, universal file experience in November 2012.
3. Feed aggregation
Microsoft also planned to connect Yammer and SharePoint activity streams. The goal was to make social activity visible across the collaboration environment rather than forcing users to treat Yammer and SharePoint as isolated destinations.

In practical terms, the broader vision was to make Yammer available inside SharePoint while making SharePoint content and activity available inside Yammer. The three foundational areas—identity, content, and feeds—were the mechanism for reducing that friction.
Why the acquisition mattered
Microsoft had agreed to buy Yammer in June 2012 to accelerate its enterprise-social strategy. The company described Yammer as a way to connect employees, conversations, and business activity across Microsoft’s wider product ecosystem.
The strategy extended beyond SharePoint. Microsoft discussed a connected experience spanning Office, Dynamics, Lync, and other applications. That was a long-term platform vision, not a claim that all of those integrations existed at the conference.

The relationship was deliberately described as complementary. Yammer supplied the people and conversation layer; SharePoint supplied collaboration sites, managed documents, and content governance.
The commercial change: Yammer became much cheaper
The pricing announcement was one of the most concrete parts of the roadmap:
- Microsoft planned to consolidate Yammer’s paid services into a single Yammer Enterprise offering.
- Yammer Enterprise’s announced price fell from $15 to $3 per user per month.
- A free Yammer Basic offering would remain available.
- Microsoft planned to include Yammer Enterprise with SharePoint Online at no additional charge.
- The keynote described Yammer Enterprise as being included with Office 365 Enterprise plans in the E1–E4 range, without increasing the existing customer price.
These were historical 2012 commercial terms. They should not be read as current Microsoft 365, SharePoint, or Viva Engage pricing, nor as a guarantee that every SharePoint customer qualified. The announced packaging focused on SharePoint Online and specified Office 365 Enterprise arrangements.
For buyers, the change mattered because it shifted Yammer from a separately purchased social-networking product toward a bundled component of Microsoft’s cloud collaboration stack.
Why SharePoint Online was central
Microsoft favored the cloud as the fastest route to the planned integration. At the time, the company said SharePoint Online would move toward improvements on an approximately 90-day release cycle, while SharePoint 2013 represented the last major traditional three-year upgrade cycle.

That distinction was strategically important. Yammer was already a cloud service, so Microsoft could update the online service more frequently than it could deliver equivalent functionality through a conventional on-premises server release.
Microsoft recommended the cloud for access to ongoing improvements and what it described as the best overall performance. However, organizations running SharePoint Server on premises could not automatically assume feature parity with SharePoint Online.
What the announcement did not mean
- It was not a complete product merger. Microsoft said it would maintain standalone Yammer offerings.
- It was not proof that single sign-on was finished. Unified identity and directory synchronization were roadmap priorities.
- It did not make SharePoint 2013 and Yammer the same product. SharePoint 2013 was a server and platform release; Yammer remained a separate cloud service.
- It did not transfer document ownership to Yammer. A document discussed or surfaced in Yammer could still remain governed by SharePoint.
- It did not guarantee identical on-premises and cloud experiences. The faster release cadence applied to SharePoint Online and Office 365’s service model.
- It did not mean every SharePoint customer received Yammer automatically. The packaging announcement referred to particular online and enterprise-plan arrangements.
Early evidence of follow-through
In a June 2013 one-year update, Microsoft said Yammer had been added to Office 365 and SharePoint Online enterprise agreements in March 2013. That provides evidence that the commercial and cloud-integration strategy moved forward after the conference.
It does not mean every item in the November 2012 roadmap arrived simultaneously or that the products instantly became one unified platform. The announcement should be read as a staged transition from connection points and demonstrations toward deeper cloud integration.
Why the 2012 announcement mattered financially
For enterprise technology buyers, the announcement had three financial implications.
Best Value
- 12-month subscription for one person – available for organizations with up to 300 people with additional paid licenses.
- 1 TB OneDrive for Business cloud storage with ransomware detection and file recovery.
- One license covers fully-installed Office apps on 5 phones, 5 tablets, and 5 PCs or Macs per user (including Windows, iOS, and Android).
- Premium versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote (features vary), Outlook, Access, Publisher, (Publisher and Access are for PC only).
- Business apps: Bookings
- Lower standalone cost: the announced Yammer Enterprise price reduction materially changed the economics of adopting the service.
- Potential bundling value: eligible SharePoint Online and Office 365 Enterprise customers could receive Yammer Enterprise without an additional list-price increase under the announced terms.
- Deployment trade-off: choosing Microsoft’s cloud direction could provide faster access to integration work, while on-premises organizations retained more direct control but could face slower access to new capabilities.
The cost decision was therefore not just a per-user licensing question. It also involved migration, identity management, governance, document architecture, administration, and the risk of assuming that a roadmap item was already production-ready.
For current product information, readers should consult Microsoft’s live pages for SharePoint, Microsoft 365 Enterprise, and Viva Engage. Those current offerings should not be used to rewrite the historical 2012 terms.
Bottom line
Microsoft’s SharePoint Conference 2012 announcement was best understood as a three-part strategy: connect Yammer’s conversations with SharePoint’s documents, make Yammer substantially cheaper and easier to package, and use SharePoint Online and Office 365 as the faster-moving delivery platform.
The immediate technology was limited integration through Web Parts and Open Graph. The deeper promise—unified identity, integrated content, and aggregated feeds—was still a roadmap. The significance was as much commercial and strategic as technical: Microsoft was positioning Yammer as a social layer across its cloud productivity ecosystem while keeping SharePoint as the foundation for managed collaboration and content.
