The short answer: Activision Blizzard was modest beside Microsoft’s total business but transformational for Microsoft Gaming. The acquisition added a major mobile operation through King, global franchises such as Call of Duty and Warcraft, and more first-party content for subscriptions and cloud distribution. Microsoft’s FY2024 results show the clearest effect: gaming revenue rose 39%, Xbox content and services revenue rose 50%, and Microsoft attributed 44 percentage points of that content-and-services growth to Activision Blizzard. Xbox hardware revenue still fell 13%, so this was not a simple console-sales turnaround.
The financial question is therefore larger than “How much revenue did Activision add?” Revenue, profit, strategic reach and the return on a multibillion-dollar purchase are different measures.
The deal, its dates and its two prices
Microsoft announced the all-cash acquisition on January 18, 2022, at $95 per Activision Blizzard share. The announced transaction value was $68.7 billion, inclusive of Activision Blizzard’s net cash. Microsoft completed the transaction on October 13, 2023, and subsequently reported the acquired business in its More Personal Computing segment, which includes Windows, devices, search advertising and Xbox-related activities.
Microsoft’s FY2024 annual report recorded a total accounting purchase price of $75.4 billion. That is not necessarily a correction to the announcement. The first figure was the announced transaction value; the second reflects the purchase price Microsoft recorded after closing and applying purchase accounting.

What Microsoft actually bought
Activision: a global blockbuster publisher
Activision brought Call of Duty and related console and PC publishing operations. Call of Duty supplies an annualized blockbuster, recurring digital spending and a large cross-platform audience.
Blizzard: PC and live-service depth
Blizzard added Warcraft, Diablo, Overwatch and other PC and console franchises. These businesses contribute more than one-time game launches: expansions, downloadable content and in-game purchases can produce recurring revenue, although they also require continuing development and service costs.
King: the mobile capability Microsoft lacked
King operates free-to-play mobile games, including Candy Crush, monetized primarily through in-game purchases and advertising. The original 2023 analysis estimated that mobile represented about 43% of Activision Blizzard’s most recent quarterly revenue at that time. That was a period-specific estimate, not a current Microsoft disclosure. The same analysis cited more than $3 billion in lifetime revenue for Call of Duty Mobile as of 2023.

How large was Activision Blizzard next to Microsoft?
The historical comparison in the July 21, 2023 analysis used approximately $7.4 billion of Activision Blizzard revenue, or about $2 billion per quarter across the four-quarter period examined. Microsoft’s comparable quarterly revenue averaged about $51.9 billion. On that basis, adding Activision Blizzard would have lifted Microsoft-wide revenue by roughly 3.85%.
That estimate belongs to the pre-close analytical period; it is not a reported post-acquisition Microsoft result. It also illustrates why the deal can be strategically huge for gaming while remaining relatively small for Microsoft overall. Microsoft’s other businesses—cloud, Office, Windows, search, advertising, devices and LinkedIn—dwarf any single game publisher.
The effect on More Personal Computing
The same analysis placed Activision Blizzard’s quarterly revenue into Microsoft’s More Personal Computing segment. The calculation produced the following illustrative reallocations:
| More Personal Computing revenue before addition | Illustrative revenue with Activision Blizzard |
|---|---|
| $14.4 billion | $16.04 billion |
| $13.3 billion | $15.08 billion |
| $14.2 billion | $16.53 billion |
| $13.3 billion | $15.68 billion |
The implied average increase was approximately 12.83%. These are calculated historical reallocations, not Microsoft-reported historical results. They answer a scale question: Activision Blizzard was large relative to the segment containing Xbox, but small relative to Microsoft as a whole.

What changed after closing?
Microsoft’s FY2024 More Personal Computing disclosure provides the first broad post-close check:
- Gaming revenue increased 39%.
- Xbox content and services revenue increased 50%.
- Microsoft attributed 44 percentage points of Xbox content-and-services growth to the Activision Blizzard acquisition.
- Xbox hardware revenue decreased 13%.
The figures support a specific conclusion: the acquisition materially increased software, add-on, subscription and other content revenue, but it did not reverse Xbox hardware weakness. Microsoft does not separately disclose every Xbox revenue stream, so these percentages should not be turned into an audited Activision profit figure. (Microsoft FY2024 More Personal Computing results)
Revenue is not profit—and neither is return on investment
A dollar of Activision Blizzard revenue does not become a dollar of Microsoft earnings. The business incurs game development, marketing, employee, platform-distribution and live-service costs. Microsoft also faced integration and transaction expenses, while purchase accounting creates amortization and other charges that can affect early reported results. (Discussion of early FY2024 effects)
Game Pass adds another economic trade-off. Putting a first-party game into a subscription can increase reach, retention and recurring revenue, but it may also displace some full-price sales. The result depends on subscription pricing, churn, usage, revenue sharing, content costs and the game’s sales curve. Cloud delivery adds infrastructure, bandwidth and latency costs. Public filings do not isolate the profit generated by Activision titles inside Game Pass or cloud gaming.
For investors, the relevant long-term test is not whether quarterly revenue rose. It is whether the combined business produces attractive cash flow and return on invested capital after those costs, while keeping its franchises healthy.

Why the deal was not simply a console purchase
Call of Duty can support console engagement, but the acquired portfolio is distributed across platforms. King is primarily mobile. Blizzard is strongly associated with PC and live services. Call of Duty has historically reached console, PC and mobile players. Microsoft therefore bought access to a broad player base and recurring digital spending, not just a reason to move more Xbox units.

The post-close hardware result reinforces that distinction. Xbox hardware revenue fell 13% in FY2024 even as content and services grew sharply. Hardware revenue is not the same as unit sales, and neither measure captures player hours, advertising, subscriptions or mobile spending, but the available evidence does not show a console-sales improvement attributable to the acquisition.

More first-party content can strengthen Xbox Game Pass, PC Game Pass and Xbox Cloud Gaming by giving subscribers reasons to join and remain engaged. It can also support cross-platform distribution and a steadier release cadence.
Those benefits are not automatic profits. Subscription inclusion changes the mix between direct game sales and recurring fees, while cloud delivery has operating costs. Regulatory remedies also shape distribution: Ubisoft received cloud-streaming rights for Activision Blizzard games under the remedy structure, even as Microsoft continued to emphasize access across platforms. (Microsoft’s one-year update)
Did Microsoft become the largest gaming company?
Microsoft’s 2022 announcement said the combined company would be the world’s third-largest gaming company by revenue, behind Tencent and Sony. “Largest” is not a universal fact without defining the metric and period. Rankings change depending on whether the comparison includes mobile, hardware, advertising, platform fees, subscriptions and exchange-rate effects, and whether it measures revenue, bookings, operating profit, market value or player reach.

Microsoft reported gaming revenue above $15 billion in FY2023, but that figure is not a standalone Activision comparison and does not establish a universal industry ranking. (Microsoft FY2023 shareholder meeting materials)
What the public numbers still cannot tell us
- Microsoft does not publish complete, standalone Xbox revenue in the same granularity as a separate public company.
- It does not disclose Activision Blizzard’s post-close operating profit as an independent reporting unit.
- There is no public figure for Game Pass revenue attributable specifically to Activision games.
- King’s exact incremental profit inside Microsoft is not separately reported.
- A single year of consolidated results cannot establish the acquisition’s lifetime return on invested capital.
The original estimate of approximately $17.75 billion for Xbox revenue was explicitly speculative and not Microsoft data. It should not be used as an audited benchmark.
The financial verdict
Activision Blizzard was small relative to Microsoft’s total revenue but large relative to Microsoft Gaming. The acquisition delivered the mobile presence Microsoft lacked, added durable franchises and materially lifted Xbox content-and-services growth. FY2024 evidence also shows what it did not do: it did not fix Xbox hardware revenue.
Whether Microsoft earns an attractive return on the $68.7 billion announced transaction value—or the $75.4 billion accounting purchase price—will require several years of segment results, franchise performance, mobile growth, subscription economics and cost disclosure. The strongest defensible conclusion today is that Microsoft bought strategic scale and reach first; the ultimate financial return remains a longer-term question.
