U.S. Personal and Family subscribers faced a $3-per-month increase beginning with the January 2025 change, while Microsoft’s commercial pricing and packaging update took effect on July 1, 2026. Whether you must pay for AI depends on your plan, renewal date, account type, location, and the alternatives Microsoft offers you.
The short answer
Microsoft included Copilot and other AI features in its standard Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscriptions and raised U.S. prices by $3 per month. Microsoft said existing subscribers would generally see the higher price at their next renewal, not immediately. The company also documented alternatives, including Microsoft 365 Basic and temporary Classic plans without Copilot, although availability can depend on the account and timing.

Business customers are handled differently. A company can often buy Copilot as an add-on for selected users, choose a bundle that includes Copilot, or use eligible Copilot Chat features without buying a full Microsoft 365 Copilot license.

So the accurate conclusion is: Microsoft used Copilot as a major reason for higher consumer pricing and is putting AI into more commercial bundles, but not every customer is required to buy the same Copilot product.

Microsoft’s original consumer announcement is available in its Microsoft 365 Blog. Commercial changes and eligibility should be checked against Microsoft’s business pricing information.
How much did consumer Microsoft 365 increase?
Microsoft described the U.S. increase as $3 per month. Comparing monthly-equivalent prices, that is approximately $36 per year. The actual amount on an annual bill can differ because annual plans, promotions, taxes, currencies, and regional pricing are not identical.
Do not assume the U.S. figure applies everywhere. Microsoft directs customers to local pricing, and the price you see can also depend on whether you pay monthly or annually.

The following are current listed U.S. price signals from Microsoft’s consumer pages. Store prices and promotions can change, so verify the amount before switching or renewing.
| Plan | Listed price | AI treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Personal | $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year | Copilot and other AI features included |
| Microsoft 365 Family | $12.99 per month or $129.99 per year | AI features are limited to the subscription owner |
| Microsoft 365 Premium | $19.99 per month or $199.99 per year | Higher Copilot usage and advanced AI features |
| Microsoft 365 Basic | Check Microsoft’s current listing | Positioned as a non-Copilot alternative; confirm included benefits |

Does Microsoft 365 Family give Copilot to all six people?
No. Family can cover up to six people and provide shared Microsoft 365 and OneDrive benefits, but Microsoft says the AI features are available only to the subscription owner. That makes Family a poor choice if the main reason for buying it is to give every household member Copilot.

Is Copilot mandatory?
For Personal and Family subscribers
Copilot is included in the current standard Personal and Family tiers rather than being a separately removable feature. However, existing subscribers may be offered a switch to Microsoft 365 Basic or a Classic Personal or Family plan without Copilot or AI credits.
Those options are not guaranteed for every account. Microsoft describes Classic plans as limited-time options, and the available button can depend on your account, market, subscription status, and renewal timing. Check the options shown in your Microsoft account before canceling or changing plans. Microsoft’s consumer FAQ and Classic-plan support page explain the available routes.

For businesses
Business licensing is more flexible. An administrator can generally assign full Copilot only to users who need it, buy a plan bundled with Copilot, or use eligible Copilot Chat access without purchasing a full Copilot license. These products are not interchangeable: Copilot Chat is not the same as full Microsoft 365 Copilot inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and organizational data workflows.
How to avoid paying for unwanted consumer AI
- Check your renewal date and price. Open your Microsoft account’s subscription-management area and review the next billing event.
- Look for a downgrade option. Compare any Basic or Classic plan offered to you. Do not assume the same choices will appear for another account.
- Check what you would lose. Review OneDrive storage, desktop applications, security benefits, stored files, sharing, and renewal timing.
- Compare a one-time Office purchase. Office Home 2024 may suit someone who mainly wants traditional Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on one device.
- Cancel only after checking files and storage. A lower-cost plan or cancellation can change application access and storage limits.
Office Home 2024 is not a complete replacement for Microsoft 365. It does not provide the same cloud storage, continuous feature updates, subscription security benefits, multi-device package, or Microsoft 365 Copilot features.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat businesses need to know in 2026
Do not combine the consumer price increase with the commercial update. They involve different customers, dates, and licensing mechanisms.

Add-on versus bundle
An existing qualifying business customer may add Copilot through the Microsoft 365 admin center and license only selected employees. New customers may choose a bundle that includes Copilot. The better option depends on how many users need AI and whether the bundle includes services the business already has.
Microsoft’s business pages show different prices for different billing commitments and configurations. For example, one U.S. listing shows Business Standard with Copilot, no Teams, at $20.30 per user per month paid yearly, and Business Premium with Copilot, no Teams, at $28.80 per user per month paid yearly. These are plan-specific listings, not universal prices.
Microsoft material also provides annual-billing price signals of $21 per user per month for Copilot Business and $30 per user per month for Microsoft 365 Copilot. Other examples include $27 for Business Basic plus Copilot Business, $33.50 for Business Standard plus Copilot Business, and $43 for Business Premium plus Copilot Business. Treat these as pricing signals: the final quote can vary by geography, customer type, Teams inclusion, billing arrangement, promotion, and sales channel.
Copilot Chat is not full Microsoft 365 Copilot
Eligible users with a qualifying Microsoft 365 subscription and Microsoft Entra ID may receive Copilot Chat at no additional license cost. That does not automatically provide the full Copilot experience in Office applications or the same organizational-data workflows.
Before assigning licenses, an administrator should confirm eligibility and review Microsoft’s licensing guidance.
A business checklist before buying Copilot
- Inventory which employees genuinely need full Copilot.
- Separate Copilot Chat eligibility from full Copilot licensing.
- Compare an add-on with a Copilot bundle using the same Teams configuration.
- Normalize monthly, annual, and annual-paid-monthly commitments.
- Model the renewal price after any promotion ends.
- Review cancellation, refund, and commitment rules.
- Audit permissions, data governance, and security before enabling AI over organizational data.
- Measure usage and outcomes instead of assigning a full license to everyone by default.
Is Microsoft 365 still worth paying for?
| Your situation | Likely best approach |
|---|---|
| You actively use Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook | Keep a Copilot-inclusive plan if the usage justifies the premium. |
| You need Office, OneDrive, and security but never use AI | Look for Basic or Classic options, then compare their storage and application limits. |
| You mainly need Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on one device | Compare the total cost of Office Home 2024 with several years of Microsoft 365. |
| Your family needs storage and Office but not six AI users | Family may still be valuable, but remember that AI access is limited to the owner. |
| Your business has a few heavy AI users | Consider an add-on instead of licensing the entire tenant. |
| Your organization needs governance and deep Microsoft 365 integration | Evaluate full Microsoft 365 Copilot only after reviewing permissions, licensing, and measurable use cases. |
What to check before your next bill
- Is your account Personal, Family, Basic, Classic, business, or enterprise?
- What is the next renewal date?
- Is the displayed amount monthly or an annual commitment paid monthly?
- Does the business plan include Teams?
- Who actually receives AI access?
- What storage and applications disappear if you downgrade?
- Is the quoted price promotional or expected to continue at renewal?
- Are you comparing like-for-like plans across countries and billing terms?
The strongest financial decision is not automatically to accept the increase or cancel Microsoft 365. Compare the value of Office, storage, security, sharing, and AI separately, then choose the least expensive plan that still provides what you use.
