Microsoft 365 Nine-Hour-Plus Outage Resolved After ‘Elevated Service Load’ During Maintenance

Microsoft resolved the January 22–23, 2026 Microsoft 365 outage after elevated load, reduced maintenance capacity and a traffic-balancing change disrupted Outlook, Exchange Online and other services.

Microsoft resolved incident MO1221364 at about 12:00 a.m. Eastern Time on January 23, 2026, after a disruption reported to have lasted nine hours and 22 minutes. Outlook and Exchange Online were most visible, but users also reported problems with Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint search, Microsoft 365 administration, Purview and Defender XDR portals.

Microsoft attributed the incident to elevated service load after planned maintenance reduced capacity in part of its North American hosted infrastructure. A subsequent traffic-balancing change created additional imbalances and extended the impact for some infrastructure. The available accounts describe an operational resilience failure; they do not establish a cyberattack.

What happened in the Microsoft 365 outage?

The disruption affected a portion of Microsoft’s North America-hosted infrastructure rather than one customer tenant, Outlook installation or local network. Microsoft tracked it as MO1221364. Microsoft Q&A records later showed the incident as resolved and the service as healthy, while noting that individual users could still experience delayed recovery.

Incident timeline

Time What was reported
January 22, 2026 Users began reporting failures across Microsoft 365 services.
January 22, approximately 3:15–3:29 p.m. ET Downdetector peaks included 12,380 Outlook reports, 15,745 Microsoft 365 reports and 2,246 Microsoft Store reports. These are user submissions, not affected-customer totals.
January 23, 12:00 a.m. ET CRN reported that Microsoft marked the incident resolved after a duration of nine hours and 22 minutes.
January 23, 1:27 a.m. ET Microsoft issued a further update saying the affected infrastructure had returned to a healthy state and that remediation would continue to be monitored.

The nine-hour-and-22-minute duration is the period reported by CRN; it should not be read as an identical outage window for every tenant or region.

Which Microsoft 365 services were affected?

  • Outlook and Exchange Online, including sending and receiving mail.
  • Microsoft Teams and OneDrive.
  • SharePoint Online search.
  • Microsoft 365 admin center access.
  • Microsoft Purview and Microsoft Defender XDR portals.

Reported symptoms included Outlook sign-in or access failures, intermittent errors, delayed delivery and temporary mail-flow failures. A service can be declared healthy while queued messages, retries, caches or client sessions are still catching up.

Microsoft’s stated cause

  1. Planned maintenance reduced available capacity in a subset of North American infrastructure.
  2. The remaining capacity encountered elevated service load.
  3. Microsoft attempted to rebalance traffic.
  4. A targeted load-balancing configuration change introduced further traffic imbalances.
  5. Those imbalances prolonged the effect on part of the infrastructure.

This is best understood as a capacity and traffic-management incident during maintenance—not as a claim that maintenance alone took Microsoft 365 offline. The public explanation reviewed here does not establish a cyberattack, data loss or a failure of a specific backup system.

How widespread was it?

Downdetector’s peak figures show that the incident was highly visible, but the service counts are reports submitted by users. They do not measure the number of affected customers, tenants or messages, and they cannot prove that all Microsoft 365 users worldwide were offline. “North America-hosted infrastructure” also does not mean that only North American users could experience symptoms because cloud services have distributed dependencies.

What administrators should do after resolution

  1. Open Microsoft 365 admin center → Health → Service health and confirm the incident is closed for your tenant.
  2. Test internal delivery, external inbound mail and external outbound mail.
  3. Test Outlook on the web and Exchange-connected applications.
  4. Check Teams, OneDrive and SharePoint search if users reported problems there.
  5. Review mail queues, nondelivery reports, delayed-delivery notices and monitoring alerts.
  6. Avoid unnecessary DNS, MX, Outlook-profile or device changes while Microsoft is recovering.
  7. If failures continue after closure, report the issue through Service health or open a Microsoft support request; it may be a separate incident.

Microsoft identifies tenant-specific Service health as the authoritative operational view for administrators. If the admin center is unavailable, use the Microsoft 365 public status page as a fallback. The Microsoft incident-readiness guidance explains the distinction between those channels.

What the outage means for business continuity

Microsoft 365 combines email, files, collaboration, identity, security and administration. That concentration simplifies day-to-day operations but allows one provider incident to affect several business functions at once. A continuity plan should treat the following as separate controls:

  • Monitoring: tenant Service health alerts and an escalation process.
  • Email continuity: alternate mailbox access or mail spooling while Microsoft 365 is unavailable.
  • Backup and recovery: independent copies that support restoration, retention or discovery.
  • Disaster recovery: documented procedures for extended provider or identity failures.
  • Alternative productivity: a tested secondary platform only where the cost and complexity are justified.

Email continuity is not the same as backup: a continuity service may keep messages accessible or queued, but it does not automatically provide long-term retention, legal discovery, mailbox restoration or recovery of OneDrive and SharePoint files. Independent tooling adds vendor, privacy, identity and testing overhead, so failover should be exercised rather than merely purchased.

What remains unknown

An accessible official preliminary or final post-incident report for MO1221364 was not available in the cited material. Secondary commentary has described additional architectural details, but those claims are not independently verified here and should not be treated as Microsoft’s settled explanation. Microsoft’s service-health documentation says qualifying broad incidents receive a preliminary post-incident report within 48 hours and a final report within five business days; publication and customer access can depend on the incident and tenant.
