Microsemi agreed on February 12, 1999, to buy Linfinity Microelectronics from Symmetricom for $24.125 million in cash. The deal brought in a semiconductor business with about $45 million in sales over the preceding 12 months, along with its sales, engineering and manufacturing operations. The acquisition closed in April 1999 for about $24.1 million.
What Microsemi bought and why
Linfinity made standard linear and mixed-signal integrated circuits, as well as systems-engineered modules, for power-management and communications applications. Its customer markets complemented Microsemi’s existing business. Microsemi chairman and CEO Philip Frey Jr. said the combined company would offer Linfinity’s integrated circuits alongside Microsemi’s discrete-device product lines to customers in defense, commercial space, telecommunications and medical markets, as well as Linfinity’s computer and peripheral customers. EE Times reported the announcement and Frey’s statement in 1999.
What the transaction included
The purchase transferred Linfinity’s sales, engineering and manufacturing operations, including its plant in Garden Grove, California. The Los Angeles Times reported that Linfinity had about 220 employees. The announced $24.125 million cash price is often rounded to $24 million; the completed transaction was reported at approximately $24.1 million.
When the deal closed
At announcement, Microsemi expected the transaction to close in late March, subject to antitrust and customary approvals. It was completed in April 1999. The Los Angeles Times reported expected acquisition-related charges of approximately $2 million to $2.5 million; these were anticipated charges, not part of the purchase price.

Who owns Linfinity products now
Microsemi later became part of Microchip Technology when Microchip completed its acquisition of Microsemi in 2018. Microchip’s current corporate pages identify Microsemi as part of Microchip and provide Microsemi product information, e-commerce, authorized distributor and support channels. For a specific Linfinity device, check its current product status and documentation through Microchip or an authorized distributor rather than assuming every legacy part remains available.
