Micron’s $15 Billion Boise Fab: What the U.S. Memory Investment Means

Micron’s approximately $15 billion plan covers a leading-edge memory fab in Boise, Idaho. Its New York megafab is a separate project, with a different scale and schedule.

Micron’s approximately $15 billion announcement is for a planned leading-edge memory fab in Boise, Idaho—not the company’s separate New York megafab. The investment is Micron’s planned spending through the end of the decade, and the company’s latest cited schedule expected the first Boise fab to begin wafer output in mid-2027 and a second in late 2028.

What Micron announced in Boise

On September 1, 2022, Micron announced plans to invest approximately $15 billion through the end of the decade in a leading-edge memory manufacturing fab in Boise, co-located with its existing research and development center. Micron described it as the first new memory manufacturing fab built in the United States in 20 years. That is the company’s characterization of the planned facility, not an independently audited inventory of every U.S. memory plant. Micron’s announcement said the facility would support domestic memory supply for markets such as automotive and data centers, amid the growth of AI and 5G.

The $15 billion figure refers to Micron’s planned investment in the Idaho project through the decade’s end. It is not the amount of a government grant. Micron separately reports federal incentives for a broader group of U.S. projects.

What is known about the schedule and jobs

Production timing

In a May 2026 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Micron said it expected the first Idaho fab to begin wafer output in mid-calendar 2027 and the second in late calendar 2028. These are company expectations, not completed milestones; production timing can change. Micron’s SEC filing is the source for those dates.

  • A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
  • A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds

Employment projection

Micron forecast that the project would support more than 17,000 new American jobs by the end of the decade, including approximately 2,000 direct Micron jobs. Those numbers were the company’s 2022 projection; they should not be read as jobs already created or as an independently verified economic-impact estimate. The announcement gives the forecast.

How the CHIPS Act funding fits in

Micron’s May 2026 SEC filing reports agreements for up to $6.1 billion in direct CHIPS Act funding for planned Boise and New York fabs together. The filing does not assign that entire amount to the Boise announcement alone. It also reports up to $275 million in direct funding for modernization of Micron’s Virginia fab and a 35% investment tax credit for qualified U.S. semiconductor manufacturing investments under the CHIPS Act. These are separate forms of support and apply across projects or qualifying investments as described by the company, rather than being interchangeable with the $15 billion Boise investment figure. See the company’s filing for its descriptions of the funding and tax credit.

Boise and the New York fab are different projects

Micron’s large project in Clay, New York, is separate from the Boise fab. The company describes the New York site as a leading-edge DRAM project, with supply expected in 2030 and beyond. Its scope and schedule should not be attributed to Idaho.

Micron says the planned Clay complex would have four cleanrooms of approximately 600,000 square feet each, totaling 2.4 million square feet. Those are New York project plans, not Boise specifications. Micron’s Clay project page provides the figures.

Why the distinction matters

Headlines about Micron’s U.S. expansion can mix two very different scales and locations: the approximately $15 billion Boise commitment and the potential multi-fab Clay complex. For personal-finance readers, the useful takeaway is to separate a company’s announced capital plan from public incentives and from projected local employment. None of those figures, by itself, establishes the eventual production date, realized job count, or financial return to a community.
