Micron, Samsung and SK hynix all make memory, but they do not sell one interchangeable product. DRAM is working memory; NAND flash is persistent storage used in SSDs. Within DRAM, DDR, LPDDR, GDDR and HBM target different platforms and workloads. The practical comparison is therefore not “which brand is best?” but “which product family fits the system, and how do comparable products perform under the same conditions?”
What each kind of memory does
DRAM holds data a processor or accelerator is actively using. It is volatile: its contents are lost when power is removed. Samsung Semiconductor’s DRAM overview describes DRAM’s role and distinguishes it from SSD storage, which mainly uses nonvolatile NAND flash.
NAND-based SSDs retain files and other data without power. That makes an SSD a storage device, not a substitute for system RAM. A computer may need both: DRAM for active work and an SSD for long-term data.
How the DRAM families differ
Samsung groups DRAM into DDR, LPDDR, GDDR and HBM families. These labels signal different intended platforms, not a ranking from “slow” to “fast.” Compare products within the family and use case that match your system.

| Family | Typical role | What to match |
|---|---|---|
| DDR | System memory for PCs and servers; Micron describes modules for servers, workstations and data centers. | Supported DDR generation, module form factor, capacity and platform compatibility. |
| LPDDR | Low-power memory for mobile and other power-constrained platforms. | Platform support and package/configuration; it is not automatically a drop-in desktop DIMM. |
| GDDR | Graphics memory for graphics workloads. | Graphics device and its supported memory configuration. |
| HBM | Stacked, high-bandwidth DRAM for accelerators, AI training and high-performance computing. | Accelerator platform, bandwidth, capacity, power and thermal design; HBM is not a normal DIMM upgrade. |
Samsung’s family descriptions are on its DRAM page. Micron’s published DRAM portfolio covers modules and related categories, while its broader product portfolio identifies HBM and LPDDR as well. The retrieved SK hynix company overview supports describing it as a supplier of advanced DRAM and AI memory, but does not provide an equally detailed family-by-family inventory.
HBM and AI memory: compare platforms, not brand slogans
HBM is specialized stacked DRAM designed for accelerator systems. It is relevant to AI and HPC because those workloads can demand substantial memory bandwidth, but a vendor’s peak specification alone does not establish which complete system is faster or more cost-effective.
Samsung’s HBM product overview lists HBM3, HBM3E and HBM4. Samsung specifies HBM3 at up to 6.4 Gbps per pin and up to 819 GB/s per stack; it specifies HBM3E at up to 9.2 Gbps per pin and up to 1,180 GB/s per stack. These are Samsung-published product specifications, not independent comparative test results. See Samsung’s HBM overview.

Micron identifies HBM for AI and HPC, and its 2026 sustainability report lists HBM3E and HBM4 configurations along with DDR5, LPDDR5X-based SOCAMM2, GDDR7 and data-center memory modules. Those are Micron-reported portfolio details; current availability should be checked for a time-sensitive purchase or deployment decision. The available SK hynix overview mentions HBM and AI memory but does not give same-date, same-format specifications for a direct comparison. The evidence here therefore does not establish an overall AI-memory winner.
Samsung’s August 4, 2026 FMS roadmap presentation discussed HBM4E and HBM5, LPDDR5X-PIM, PM1763 and V10 BV-NAND. It described zHBM and zNAND-O as concept models, not shipping products. A roadmap mention should not be treated as evidence that a product is generally available. See Samsung’s FMS 2026 announcement.
NAND and SSDs: compare storage products separately
SSD comparisons belong in a separate lane from DRAM comparisons. Samsung organizes its SSD offerings into PC, data center, enterprise and automotive categories. Micron publishes client and data-center SSD families. Their intended platforms differ, so a consumer PC drive should not be judged as if it were a data-center device.

Micron’s data-center SSD page identifies the 9650 as PCIe Gen6, the 9550 as PCIe Gen5, and the 6600 ION as a high-capacity SSD for AI, cloud, enterprise and hyperscale workloads. These product descriptions identify interfaces and target uses; they do not by themselves supply a matched head-to-head test. Details are on Micron’s data-center SSD page.
Samsung’s August 2026 FMS material described PM1763 as a PCIe Gen6 TLC SSD based on V9 V-NAND for AI training and inference. Samsung’s broader SSD categories are listed at its SSD overview. The available SK hynix source does not provide enough current official SSD model detail for a fair model-by-model comparison, so no specific SK hynix SSD is ranked here.

How to choose or compare products fairly
Start with the workload and the platform, then compare products that actually serve the same role. For a PC upgrade, check the system’s supported memory generation and form factor before choosing a kit; the brand alone does not determine compatibility.

- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU

- Identify the component. Decide whether you need system DRAM, graphics memory, accelerator HBM or an SSD. These are not substitutes for one another.
- Match the platform and use. Compare client PC memory with compatible client PC memory, or data-center SSDs with data-center SSDs—not unrelated families.
- Match the configuration. Check capacity per module, package or stack, memory generation, interface and form factor. For a desktop RAM kit, verify the motherboard or system’s supported DDR generation and module type.
- Compare performance on equivalent terms. Use matched bandwidth or transfer-rate specifications and, where available, tests on the same platform and workload. A peak pin rate is not directly comparable to an application benchmark.
- Account for power and thermals. Platform design and workload affect behavior; a headline speed does not describe the full power or cooling requirements.
- Check availability and price at decision time. These change over time, and the cited product information does not establish a consistent three-vendor price comparison.
Manufacturer specifications and roadmap announcements are useful for understanding product positioning, but they are not neutral head-to-head tests. No comparable market-share, shipment or revenue figures for all three companies are established here, so a market ranking would not answer which part is right for a particular system.
What the comparison can—and cannot—tell you
The clearest distinction is by product family: DDR and LPDDR serve different system designs, GDDR serves graphics uses, HBM is specialized accelerator memory, and NAND SSDs provide persistent storage. Samsung and Micron’s cited pages expose substantial category detail; the cited SK hynix overview is higher-level. That difference in available detail is not evidence that one company lacks products or is inferior. Choose by compatible product and workload, and seek current matched specifications before making a buying or deployment decision.
