Micro Loans vs. Traditional Bank Loans: Which Is Right for Your Business?

An SBA Microloan may suit a U.S. small business needing up to $50,000 for an eligible expense. Compare its rules and intermediary-set terms with the specific bank loan offers available to you.

If your U.S. small business needs $50,000 or less for an eligible startup or expansion expense, an SBA Microloan may be worth considering. A traditional bank business loan may fit better if you need a different amount, have a use the Microloan program excludes, or find an offer that better suits your cash flow. Neither label tells you the full cost or whether you will qualify: compare the written terms of the specific offers.

“Micro loan” can refer to different products. The program details here are for the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Microloan Program—not payday loans, personal microloans, or every small loan offered by a bank. “Traditional bank loan” is broad, too; amounts, uses, underwriting, and terms vary by lender and product.

How do SBA Microloans compare with traditional bank business loans?

The clearest distinction is that an SBA Microloan is a defined program with a $50,000 maximum, specific permitted uses, and an application route through an SBA-designated intermediary. A traditional bank business loan is not one standardized product, so its amount, cost, eligible uses, and repayment terms depend on the lender and loan.

What to compare SBA Microloan Traditional bank business loan
Amount Up to $50,000; the SBA reports an average loan of about $13,000. SBA program details Varies by product and lender; there is no single range that describes all bank business loans.
Who decides and sets terms An SBA-approved intermediary makes the credit decision and sets the borrower’s terms. SBA program details The bank or other lender offering the loan decides under its own product terms; universal criteria are not established here.
Permitted uses Working capital, inventory, supplies, furniture, fixtures, machinery, and equipment. Cannot be used to repay existing debt or buy real estate. SBA program details Product-specific. Check the offer’s permitted uses rather than assuming every bank loan allows the same expenses.
Interest and fees The SBA says rates generally range from 8% to 13%; the actual rate varies by intermediary. Confirm the current written offer and all charges. SBA program details No comparable current average is established here. Compare the actual rate, fees, and total repayment in each offer.
Repayment The SBA states a maximum term of seven years; the intermediary sets the actual terms. SBA program details Term, payment size, and frequency vary by lender and product.
How to apply Apply through an SBA-approved intermediary; use the SBA’s microlender directory to find participating lenders. Contact the bank or lender offering the specific product and ask for its written terms.

The SBA describes the intermediary’s role directly: “SBA-approved lenders make all credit decisions and set all terms for your microloan.” The program has an SBA structure, but the intermediary—not the SBA—decides whether to lend and what terms to offer.

When might an SBA Microloan be the better fit?

Investigate the program if your business is eligible, your financing need is no more than $50,000, and the planned expense is allowed. The SBA reports an average Microloan of about $13,000, but that figure is not a promise of what a particular applicant can borrow. A smaller loan is not automatically a cheaper loan; compare the full repayment cost and schedule.

Intermediaries may also provide management and technical assistance through the program structure. Ask the lender what support it offers; do not assume every intermediary provides the same services to every borrower.

When should you consider a bank loan or another product?

Consider other financing if you need more than the Microloan limit, want to buy real estate, need to refinance existing debt, or find that a different product’s terms better match your business’s cash flow. That does not mean a bank loan will necessarily be available, cheaper, or more suitable; assess the specific offer.

The SBA’s 7(a) program illustrates a separate option: participating lenders offer SBA-backed loans of up to $5 million with a wider range of uses. A 7(a) loan is a distinct SBA program, not a description of every traditional bank loan. See the SBA’s lender resources for program information.

  • Input any three loan variables to compute the fourth.

What should you compare before accepting either loan?

Request written terms from each lender and compare the offers on the same basis. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau advises borrowers considering personal installment loans to check disclosures for fees and shop among lenders; that advice is not a complete guide to business-loan disclosures, but it is a useful reminder to inspect costs rather than compare rates alone.

  • Amount disbursed: How much will your business actually receive after any deductions?
  • Interest rate: What is the rate, and is it fixed or variable?
  • Fees: What upfront, recurring, documentation, origination, or late fees apply? CFPB discusses fee examples for personal installment loans in its fee guidance, last reviewed August 30, 2024.
  • Repayment: What is the payment amount, frequency, term, and total amount repaid?
  • Collateral and guarantees: What assets, if any, must secure the loan, and is a personal guarantee required?
  • Prepayment: Can you repay early, and would doing so involve a fee or change the amount owed?
  • Permitted use: Does the lender allow the exact expense you plan to fund?

These details can make two loans with similar principal amounts materially different for your budget. Do not infer approval odds, collateral rules, or credit-score requirements from the program label; ask the lender about its requirements.

Where do you apply for an SBA Microloan?

  1. Review the SBA’s Microloans program page to confirm program uses, limits, and current guidance.
  2. Search the SBA’s list of microlenders for an intermediary serving your area.
  3. Contact the intermediary directly to confirm it currently serves your location, is accepting applications, and offers the amount you need.
  4. Ask for its application requirements and written loan terms, then compare those terms with any other financing offers before accepting.

What the available figures do—and do not—show

The SBA’s program page gives a maximum Microloan amount of $50,000, an average of about $13,000, general interest-rate guidance of 8%–13%, and a maximum repayment term of seven years. The page does not state a measurement year alongside the average or an observation period for the rate guidance, and an intermediary sets an individual borrower’s terms. Confirm current information directly with the SBA and lender.

Separately, the SBA Office of Inspector General reported that $86.4 million in Microloans were approved for more than 5,500 small businesses in fiscal year 2023 in its Verification Inspection of SBA’s Microloan Program. That historical program statistic is not a measure of an individual applicant’s chance of approval or of current lending volume.
