Michigan unemployment benefits can provide temporary income if you lose work or have your hours reduced, but eligibility and the amount you may receive depend on your wages and the facts of your separation. As of October 4, 2026, the 2026 maximum weekly benefit rate is $530, and eligible claims generally last 14 to 26 weeks. You must apply for an individual determination and keep meeting the claim requirements while you certify.
Who may qualify for Michigan unemployment benefits?
Michigan UIA generally requires you to be unemployed, able and available for suitable full-time work, and actively seeking work. You must also register for work unless UIA tells you otherwise. UIA reviews your wage history and the circumstances of your job separation; meeting a wage test alone does not guarantee benefits.
Beginning July 17, 2026, a person who had to leave work because of domestic violence or to protect the safety of a household member may qualify if the other requirements are met. Other separation issues and exceptions depend on the individual facts and UIA’s decision.
What wage requirements apply?
UIA uses base-period wages to determine whether you qualify financially. Its 2026 guidance describes these two wage routes:

| Route | Wage requirements | Who the figure applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary wage test | Wages in at least two quarters; total base-period wages of at least 1.5 times the highest-quarter wages; and at least $5,157 in the high quarter. | The $5,157 high-quarter threshold applies to benefit years starting after February 21, 2026, according to Michigan UIA’s 2026 program guidance. |
| Alternate earnings qualifier | Wages in at least two calendar quarters and total base-period wages of at least $26,677.60. | Michigan UIA’s 2026 handbook sets this amount at 20 times the 2026 state average weekly wage of $1,333.88. |
Your Monetary Determination states whether UIA found you financially eligible and lists the wages it used. Check it against your records and follow the instructions on the notice if information appears incorrect.
How much can you receive, and for how long?
For 2026, Michigan UIA sets the maximum weekly benefit rate at $530. The weekly rate is calculated using 4.1% of wages in your highest base-period quarter, subject to that cap. The general duration range is 14 to 26 weeks; your base-period wages and weekly rate affect how many weeks UIA allows. Your own Monetary Determination—not the maximum—shows the amount and eligible weeks assigned to your claim.

UIA has scheduled changes for January 1, 2027: a maximum weekly rate of $614 and an additional $26 weekly rate for each of up to five dependents. These are future figures, not the rates in effect on October 4, 2026; confirm the current rules with UIA when the effective date approaches.
How do you file a claim?
Michigan UIA’s July 2026 Fact Sheet 160 lists online filing through Michigan.gov/UIA after signing in to MiLogin and opening MiWAM, or filing by telephone. Choose one method and provide accurate information about every employer you worked for during the previous 18 months.

Gather information before you start
- Your driver’s license or state ID and Social Security number. If you are not a U.S. citizen, have your USCIS number and work-authorization expiration information.
- For each employer from the prior 18 months: name and address, first and last dates worked, pay rate and how often you were paid, and the reason your work ended or hours changed.
- Your bank account and routing numbers only if you want direct deposit. UIA also offers a debit card.
Complete work registration
After filing, create a job-seeker account at MiTalent.org and complete the Michigan Works! service-center registration step before your first certification, unless UIA staff instruct you otherwise. Ask your local Michigan Works! office whether it offers a virtual option. Monitor MiWAM, mail, and other contact channels for requests, and respond by the deadline stated in each request.
What must you do to keep receiving benefits?
Certify every two weeks under the current system
As of October 4, 2026, claimants certify every two weeks using MiWAM or MARVIN. Online MiWAM certification is available throughout your certification week. To use MARVIN, call 1-866-638-3993 during your assigned call-in time. Do not certify both online and by phone for the same period.
Complete and report work searches
For each week you claim, you must complete at least three unique work-search activities and report them when you certify. This requirement began July 19, 2026. Follow UIA’s current list of qualifying activities and keep records because the agency may ask for documentation.
Report work and gross earnings
Report earnings for the calendar week in which you performed the work, not the week you receive the pay. Report gross earnings before deductions. Part-time work may reduce your benefit rather than automatically disqualify you.

Allow time for payment processing
UIA says payments are generally issued within 2–3 business days after certification, though processing can take longer. Its general filing guidance says a first payment commonly arrives about three weeks after filing, depending on the circumstances. Check MiWAM for your payment status and agency correspondence.

In an update published September 16, 2026, UIA said benefits functions are scheduled to move from MiWAM to the new MiUI system on November 9, 2026. The announced plan is to shift certifications and benefit payments from a biweekly to a weekly schedule after launch. That is a planned future change as of October 4, 2026; check UIA’s current instructions near the transition before filing or certifying.
What if UIA questions or denies your claim?
UIA issues a monetary determination after processing a claim and may issue a non-monetary determination after investigating an eligibility issue. Read each notice carefully: the applicable response deadline and next step depend on the specific decision. Use the form and instructions identified in that notice; UIA says its chatbot cannot file a protest or appeal for you.
If a decision is unfavorable, UIA identifies requests for rehearing or reopening with the Michigan Office of Administrative Hearings and Rules (MOAHR), and appeals to the Unemployment Insurance Appeals Commission (UIAC), as possible later steps. The correct route and deadline depend on the decision, so follow the notice rather than assuming a single deadline applies to every case. Effective July 17, 2026, parties may ask to consolidate related cases for one hearing before a MOAHR administrative law judge.
