He handed over leadership of the YC accelerator after its Winter 2024 batch, moved to Partner Emeritus in March 2025, and says on his personal site that he retired from YC in 2026. YC said he would remain available to founders after the 2025 change, but no longer work day to day or directly on batches.
What is Michael Seibel’s current status at Y Combinator?
The clearest recent evidence points to Seibel having retired from YC in 2026: his personal site describes him as retired. A 2026 Dropbox proxy biography instead calls him Partner Emeritus. YC’s public profile still labels him “General Partner,” but that profile conflicts with the later dated statements and does not give a clear as-of date. The status labels therefore reflect different sources and dates, rather than one cleanly updated public record.
In practical terms, Seibel stopped leading the accelerator in 2024, ended day-to-day and direct batch work in 2025, and described himself as retired in 2026. YC said the Emeritus role would still let him support founders through office hours and events.
How Seibel’s role changed
| Date | Role or change | What it meant |
|---|---|---|
| 2014 | Joined YC as a Group Partner | YC’s 2024 account says Seibel joined the organization in this role. |
| 2016 | Became CEO of YC | YC announced the appointment in 2016. Seibel’s personal bio says he led the accelerator from 2016 to 2024. |
| March 15, 2024 | Handed over accelerator leadership after the Winter 2024 batch | He returned to his original Group Partner role; this was not yet a departure from YC. |
| March 20, 2025 | Transitioned to Partner Emeritus | YC said he would no longer work day to day or directly on batches, while remaining available to support the community. |
| 2026 | Retired, according to Seibel’s personal site | A 2026 Dropbox proxy still describes him as Partner Emeritus; YC’s public profile continues to list General Partner. |
Why did Seibel step back?
The 2024 leadership handoff
In his March 2024 announcement, Seibel said that he had spent 17 years in management roles across his startup and YC work. He wrote that working with companies in his group excited him more than planning and executing the accelerator batch, and that he wanted to spend more time inspiring, investing in, and mentoring early-stage YC startups. He also described a new group structure for the batch. At that point, he had led 16 YC batches, and YC had invested in more than 800 companies under his work, according to Seibel’s announcement.

The 2025 Emeritus transition
When he announced the transition to Partner Emeritus, Seibel said it would give him free time for new pursuits. He specifically mentioned government technology as an area he was excited to explore after taking time to relax. These are his stated reasons; the available announcements do not establish that he was forced out or left because of a conflict.
What “Partner Emeritus” meant for YC founders
YC President and CEO Garry Tan said on March 20, 2025, that Seibel would no longer be involved in the organization’s day-to-day work or work directly on batches. Tan also said Seibel would continue supporting the YC community in meaningful ways. YC identified office hours and events as ways he could remain involved. Emeritus status therefore marked an end to his operational and batch role, not an announcement that founders could never hear from him again.
Rank #2
The distinction matters because Seibel’s 2024 handoff and 2025 transition were different changes: first, accelerator leadership passed on while he remained a Group Partner; later, he left day-to-day work and direct batch involvement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why public profiles do not match
- Different dates: YC’s General Partner profile may not reflect changes announced in 2025 and 2026.
- Different roles: “General Partner” describes the title shown on YC’s profile; “Partner Emeritus” describes the role YC announced in 2025; “retired” is the wording on Seibel’s personal site in 2026.
- Different sources: Seibel’s dated first-person statement and the 2026 proxy biography are newer than YC’s undated profile, but they use different descriptions of his status.
For the most precise account, describe the sequence and attribute the latest wording to its source: Seibel’s site says he retired in 2026, while the Dropbox proxy calls him Partner Emeritus and YC’s public profile still says General Partner.
