Michael Gronager’s absence from Chainalysis was initially described as a temporary personal leave in October 2024. The eventual outcome was different: Chainalysis announced that co-founder Jonathan Levin became CEO effective December 3, 2024, and that Gronager would leave both the company and its board.
What happened at Chainalysis?
The Block reported on October 3, 2024, that Gronager had been on personal leave since September 25. A Chainalysis spokesperson described the matter as personal, while Gronager characterized his move as temporary and declined to provide details. Sari Granat, then the company’s president and chief operating officer, served as interim CEO during his absence.
On December 5, 2024, Chainalysis announced that Levin’s appointment as CEO had taken effect two days earlier. The company said Gronager would step down from his role and board seat, while Granat would return to her positions as president and COO.
Why did Michael Gronager step down?
The specific personal issue behind Gronager’s leave was not disclosed in The Block’s October 2024 report. Chainalysis’s later announcement explained the leadership change and Gronager’s departure, but did not give a more detailed reason for the original leave. There is no basis in those accounts to attribute it to a particular health, family, performance, or other private matter.

Who leads Chainalysis now?
Chainalysis’s leadership page, accessed October 8, 2026, lists Jonathan Levin as co-founder and CEO. That current roster reflects the subsequent appointment, not the initial interim arrangement during Gronager’s leave.
Chainalysis describes its business as a blockchain data platform providing data, AI-powered software, services, and research to organizations such as government agencies, exchanges, financial institutions, and cybersecurity companies. In its December 2024 announcement, Gronager said he was proud of the company’s development of a blockchain data platform serving the cryptocurrency industry.
