Its pre-Portsmouth activity included acquiring Topps with Madison Dearborn Partners, digital-media ventures associated with Vuguru, and television production.
What was Tornante, and when did Eisner found it?
Eisner founded Tornante in 2005 as a company for investing in, acquiring and operating businesses in media and entertainment, according to Tornante’s company description. It was the vehicle behind several of the clearest examples of his business activity after Disney and before Portsmouth.
Those examples span different kinds of work: a consumer-products company, digital-media activity and television production. They are evidence of a media-focused strategy, not a complete inventory of every investment Eisner made.
What businesses was Tornante involved in before Portsmouth?
Topps: trading cards and collectibles
On March 12, 2007, Tornante’s press archive recorded an announcement that it and Madison Dearborn Partners would acquire The Topps Company. A trade account reported an agreed acquisition price of $385 million; that figure is the reported value of the historical deal, not Topps’s present value or a statement of Eisner’s personal ownership share. Topps was known for sports trading cards as well as confectionery products, stickers and collectible sports games. The acquisition is a concrete example of Tornante’s interests reaching beyond screen entertainment into consumer products and collectibles. It does not mean Eisner personally owned all of Topps, or establish that he still owns the company.
Vuguru: digital media activity
Tornante’s archive also records Vuguru-related activity before the Portsmouth deal, including an investment and distribution agreement with Rogers Media dated October 26, 2009. Tornante Television: producing programming
Tornante Television describes its work as developing, producing and financing animation and live-action programming. That is a different business model from acquiring a product company: it centers on creating and financing content. The company’s current description establishes the type of work it does, but by itself does not date individual projects to the period before Portsmouth. Tornante Television’s company description
How did Portsmouth fit into those interests?
Tornante says it acquired Portsmouth Football Club in August 2017. That made the club a later addition to a business vehicle already associated with media, entertainment and consumer products. BBC Sport reported an offer of £5.67 million and a further £10 million investment promise in its 2022 account of the bid; those are reported offer terms and a commitment, not necessarily the final purchase price or the total funding ultimately provided. What can—and can’t—be concluded about Eisner’s portfolio?
The supported picture is of Eisner using Tornante to pursue media and entertainment interests, with examples spanning Topps, Vuguru-related digital activity and television production before the Portsmouth acquisition. The available record does not establish a comprehensive list of his pre-2017 holdings or a total value for that portfolio.
