Re:

Michael Burry’s Reported Micron Put Trade: Does It Mean the Stock Will Fall by Half?

Michael Burry reportedly moved into June Micron puts with strikes around $500. The strike is a contract term, not proof of a 50% stock decline.

Michael Burry reportedly shifted his Micron position into June put options with strike prices in the $500 range. That is a bearish trade, but it does not prove Micron shares will fall to $500—or that Burry expects a precise 50% decline. The report does not disclose the options’ exact expiration, contract count, or premium.

Is Michael Burry shorting Micron?

MT Newswires reported on September 28, 2026, that Burry had changed his Micron short into June put options in the $500 strike range. The report attributed the position details to Burry’s Monday newsletter and said multiple outlets had reported them. The original newsletter was not available to independently verify the wording or contract terms. MT Newswires’ report

This is the latest position reported in the available account, not a verified disclosure of the exact options Burry holds. An earlier July 3, 2026 article said he had disclosed a direct Micron short with a stated entry of $1,051.87 per share, after saying puts “seemed expensive.” That earlier position should not be treated as the entry price or cost basis for the later puts. What does a $500 Micron put mean?

A put gives its buyer the right, but not the obligation, to sell the underlying shares at the strike price under the contract’s terms. A $500 strike is therefore a contractual price, not a forecast or a promise that Micron shares will reach that level. The option’s outcome also depends on its expiration and the premium paid.

The September report gives only a strike range and June timing. It does not state the precise expiration date, number of contracts, or premium. Without those details, readers cannot calculate the trade’s breakeven point, total cost, or maximum loss.

Why “cut in half” is an interpretation

The headline framing compares a reported strike near $500 with a share price around the time of reporting. The available reporting does not establish a contemporaneous October 2026 Micron share price, so it cannot support a precise percentage decline. More fundamentally, the strike is not evidence that Burry expects the shares to touch it.

How much did Burry spend on Micron puts?

The reported premium and contract count are not disclosed, so the amount Burry spent—and the maximum amount at risk on the options—cannot be determined from the report. A strike price or a reported value based on the underlying shares is not the same as the options’ premium.

That distinction matters when interpreting regulatory holdings reports. The SEC explains that long puts on Form 13F are reported in terms of the underlying securities, and that the reported value differs from the actual value of unexercised options. The form also excludes short positions that may hedge long positions. Its 2023 filing describes the reporting rules; it is not evidence of Burry’s current Micron position. Why is Burry reportedly bearish on Micron?

The newswire said Burry wanted more leverage given low volatility measures and quoted him as saying “the bubble in AI may burst sooner than later.” It linked his view to doubts about whether AI-related revenue expectations are proven and to Acer’s CEO discussing the return of memory cyclicality. Those are reported concerns, not established predictions about Micron’s results. MT Newswires’ report

The underlying bearish case is that memory is cyclical: demand, supply, and pricing can shift, potentially weakening revenue after a strong period. The question for Micron is whether AI-related demand and high-bandwidth memory sales can remain strong enough to offset the risk of a memory downturn. The available reports do not settle that question with current 2026 operating data.

What Micron’s results showed—and what they did not

Micron’s fiscal Q3 2025 earnings release, dated June 2025, offered evidence of strong AI-linked demand at that point. The company reported revenue of $9.301 billion, record DRAM revenue, nearly 50% sequential growth in HBM revenue, and data-center revenue more than doubling year over year. CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said the quarter’s record revenue was “driven by all-time-high DRAM revenue including nearly 50% sequential growth in HBM revenue.” Micron fiscal Q3 2025 results

Those figures document a historical quarter, not Micron’s current 2026 results or its future share performance. They help explain the opposing case: AI infrastructure demand has supported substantial memory sales, including high-bandwidth memory. Whether that demand continues, how supply and pricing evolve, and whether customers sustain their spending are separate questions that the cited 2025 results cannot answer.

How to read the competing cases

Question Bearish case reported for Burry Operating case in Micron’s cited results
Memory cycle Memory may return to a weaker part of its cycle, as discussed in the reporting. The cited fiscal Q3 2025 release showed record DRAM revenue; it does not establish where the cycle stands in 2026.
AI demand AI-related revenue expectations may prove too optimistic or insufficiently established. Micron reported nearly 50% sequential HBM revenue growth and more than doubled year-over-year data-center revenue in fiscal Q3 2025.
Trade terms The reported June puts express a bearish position, but exact expiration, quantity, and premium are not stated. Company operating results do not reveal Burry’s option payoff or prove what Micron’s shares will do.

The evidence supports describing a reported bearish position and the competing business arguments—not declaring either thesis correct. Current results, guidance, memory supply and pricing, customer demand, and the options’ full terms would be needed to assess the cases more fully.
