In November 2025, Michael Burry’s public criticism of Nvidia raised a question larger than whether his bearish case was right: could a prominent critic with a fast-growing audience amplify doubts about AI investment before the underlying claims were settled? Connie Loizos’s TechCrunch article treated that as a possibility—not proof that Burry caused a loss of confidence or that an AI-market collapse was inevitable.
What Burry challenged—and what Nvidia reportedly disputed
TechCrunch’s November 27, 2025 account described a dispute over three parts of the AI boom: how Nvidia accounts for employee compensation, how long AI companies assume expensive GPUs will remain useful, and whether some customer demand is supported by circular financing. These were Burry’s allegations as reported by the publication, not established findings of accounting misconduct.

Stock-based compensation
TechCrunch reported that Burry estimated Nvidia’s stock-based compensation cost shareholders $112.5 billion. Nvidia’s investor-relations team reportedly circulated a seven-page memo to Wall Street analysts disputing his calculations, saying he had included restricted-stock-unit taxes and describing employee compensation as consistent with peers. The article also reported a $91 billion buyback-related figure in the company’s response. Those are competing claims with different descriptions; neither figure should be treated as an independently verified measure here. TechCrunch’s November 27, 2025 report.

GPU useful life and depreciation
Burry argued that AI companies were using long equipment-depreciation assumptions even as GPUs could lose value quickly amid rapid technological change. That is an argument about whether accounting estimates reflect the equipment’s economic usefulness. The TechCrunch account does not establish that the assumptions were improper, nor does it provide a settled alternative useful life.

Who is financing AI demand?
Burry also argued that some AI-customer demand was circularly financed. The concern is that revenue and investment can reinforce one another in ways that make end-user demand harder to assess. The report presents this as his contention, not as proof that Nvidia’s sales were fictitious or that customers could not ultimately justify their purchases.
Why the Cisco comparison matters
TechCrunch reported that Burry objected to an Enron comparison and said he was comparing Nvidia with Cisco during the late-1990s infrastructure buildout. As quoted by Connie Loizos, Burry said: “I didn’t compare Nvidia to Enron. I’m comparing Nvidia to Cisco circa the late 1990s, when it overbuilt infrastructure that nobody actually needed at the time and its stock cratered 75% when everyone realized as much.” The quotation appears in Loizos’s TechCrunch article; it is attributed here to Burry through that report.

The analogy is about the risk that infrastructure investment outruns durable demand—not an assertion that the companies, products, or eventual outcomes are identical. TechCrunch said Nvidia’s market capitalization was $4.5 trillion at the time and characterized its share-price rise since early 2023 as twelvefold. Both are dated descriptions from November 2025, not current market figures or a fresh return calculation.
Three questions help separate evidence from market drama
| Question | Bearish concern reported in 2025 | What the account establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Is AI compute demand durable? | Burry argued that some customer demand was circularly financed and invoked the possibility of overbuilt infrastructure. | The article reports his concern; it does not establish that demand was unsustainable or that a collapse followed. |
| Do GPU depreciation assumptions fit reality? | Burry questioned long useful-life assumptions for rapidly changing equipment. | The article reports the criticism but does not settle the appropriate useful life or show that the accounting was improper. |
| Are compensation costs being represented fairly? | Burry’s estimate put the shareholder cost at $112.5 billion. | Nvidia reportedly challenged his math, citing restricted-stock-unit taxes and peer practices; the account does not independently resolve the calculation. |
| Could public persuasion affect confidence? | A well-known critic with a larger audience might amplify concern about AI investment. | This was TechCrunch’s scenario, not evidence that Burry triggered a market decline. |
Why a critic’s audience can matter without proving the thesis
TechCrunch’s central tension was between Burry as a possible warning signal and Burry as a force that could help spread the doubts he was expressing. A prominent investor’s argument can shape attention and expectations, particularly when investors are already debating whether AI spending reflects durable demand or market mania. But influence on discussion is not the same as proof: the article did not show that his audience caused an implosion, that his analysis was correct, or that the market outcome he feared was inevitable.

The publication also reported that Burry’s newsletter, Cassandra Unchained, had reached 90,000 subscribers less than a week after launch and cost $400 per year. Those are figures reported in 2025, not verified current subscriber or pricing information.
What disclosed put options can—and cannot—tell you
TechCrunch reported put-option positions against Nvidia and Palantir based on regulatory filings. A filing captures a position for a particular reporting period; it does not prove the investor still held it later. Options positions are also not a direct verdict on a company’s fundamentals: a put can be one element of a portfolio strategy, and a filing snapshot does not reveal every subsequent transaction.

A surfaced SEC filing index illustrates the attribution problem. The filing at SEC.gov is Nvidia Corporation’s 13F-HR, filed August 14, 2026 for the period ending June 30, 2026. It is Nvidia’s filing, not a Burry filing, and says nothing about his current holdings. It cannot update the earlier report about Burry’s positions.

- Treat the compensation, depreciation, and financing points as attributed arguments, not settled findings.
- Keep Nvidia’s reported response distinct from independent verification: TechCrunch said the company challenged Burry’s calculations and defended its compensation practices.
- Read the Cisco comparison as a warning about possible overbuilding, not a prediction proven by the analogy itself.
- Keep market capitalization, stock performance, newsletter subscriptions, and price attached to their November 2025 context.
- Do not infer current holdings from a past options disclosure or from a filing submitted by Nvidia.
The story’s lasting value is the distinction it asks readers to make: whether the criticisms are accurate, whether the company’s reported rebuttal addresses them, and whether public attention can intensify uncertainty before either side has been conclusively established.
