Meta announced AI-powered customer-service and commerce tools for WhatsApp Business on June 6, 2024, alongside account verification, business calling and advertising features. That was a package of separate tools—not one chatbot available to every business. The newer development is Meta Business Agent, announced in June 2026, which Meta says can answer business-specific questions, recommend products and handle tasks such as booking appointments. Availability, pricing and eligibility vary by product and business.
What Meta announced for WhatsApp Business in 2024
At its Conversations event in São Paulo, Brazil, on June 6, 2024, Meta outlined a broader business-messaging strategy. It combined AI-assisted replies and product discovery with advertising, account verification and calling. These capabilities were not interchangeable, and the announcement did not establish that every WhatsApp Business account would receive an autonomous AI agent. Tech Times’ coverage of the announcement describes the features and rollout context.
AI answers and product discovery
Meta said it was training AI to answer common questions that businesses receive on WhatsApp. The aim was to speed up routine responses and help customers find relevant products or services in a conversation. In a typical use, a customer messages a business, the AI answers a straightforward question or helps clarify what the customer needs, and the conversation can move to a relevant product or a person on staff.
The 2024 announcement supports describing these tools as AI assistance for common inquiries and discovery; it does not establish that every implementation could independently complete purchases or payments. A business should treat the AI as a possible first line of help, not proof that human support is no longer needed.

Click-to-WhatsApp ads
Meta’s advertising tools connect ads on Facebook and Instagram to a WhatsApp conversation. That can bring a prospective customer from an ad into a business’s messaging channel, where staff—or, where available, automation—can respond. The ad generates the conversation; it is not itself an AI support feature.
Meta Verified for WhatsApp Business
Meta also announced Meta Verified for business accounts in selected markets, including India, Brazil, Colombia and Indonesia. Reported benefits included a verification badge, enhanced account support and protection against impersonation. Availability and price were market-specific, not a universal offer. A contemporary Techmeme item reported a starting price of about $14 per month in the context of the period and markets then being discussed; that is historical reporting, not a current U.S. price. Techmeme’s June 2024 report provides that price reference.

Calling for larger businesses
Meta said larger businesses would be able to receive calls initiated directly from WhatsApp, giving customers a way to switch from text to voice for issues that are difficult to resolve in writing. This was aimed at larger businesses, and the announcement did not establish universal availability or eligibility. It is distinct from ordinary WhatsApp voice calls between personal accounts and does not mean businesses could immediately deploy AI voice agents.
What Meta Business Agent adds in 2026
Meta’s June 3, 2026 announcement of Meta Business Agent is the more recent development in the company’s business-messaging strategy. Meta describes the agent as able to answer questions specific to a business, recommend products from its catalog, book appointments, qualify leads and help close sales. Businesses can decide when a person takes over. Meta also says the agent can respond in a customer’s local language and follow a business’s tone, and that it can provide a morning briefing about missed conversations and thread insights. These are Meta’s stated capabilities; actual access and performance may vary.

Meta said it was expanding Business Agent globally to businesses of all sizes. That does not mean every business can use every capability now: access and paid features vary. Meta also said businesses could get started for free, with paid subscription offerings for different business sizes to follow in the coming months. The announcement does not establish a universal current subscription price. Meta’s Business Agent announcement is the source for its feature, rollout and pricing statements.
Meta reported that more than one million businesses were already using a Meta Business Agent on WhatsApp and Messenger, and that more than one billion active threads with businesses occur daily across WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram. These are Meta-provided figures, not independently audited measurements.

The Business Agent Platform for larger organizations
Meta also introduced the Meta Business Agent Platform for larger businesses to build, customize and deploy agents at scale. Meta describes enterprise controls, guardrails and measurement capabilities, and names integrations including Shopify, Zendesk and Shopee. The platform is a separate enterprise-oriented offering, not simply another name for the basic WhatsApp Business app. Integration depth and availability may differ by system and business.
What to automate—and what to keep with people
AI is most useful for repeatable, lower-risk work when the business has accurate information and a reliable escalation route. A practical division of work looks like this:
Best Value
| Better candidates for automation | Keep with a person |
|---|---|
| Frequently asked questions and opening hours | Complaints, refund disputes and unusual orders |
| Catalog browsing and basic product suggestions | Complex negotiations or high-value sales decisions |
| Appointment requests and routine booking details | Medical, legal, financial, safety or other regulated advice |
| Initial lead questions and qualification | Sensitive account issues or cases needing professional judgment |
| Basic order-status questions, if reliable order data is connected | Cases where an incorrect answer could cause material harm |
Customers should have a visible way to reach a person, especially when a problem is unresolved. A handoff works only if a staffed queue exists, the employee can see the earlier conversation, and the customer knows when to expect a reply.

The word “WhatsApp AI” can obscure several different products. The 2024 AI announcement, 2026 Business Agent, Meta Verified, calling and the enterprise Agent Platform have different purposes and availability. Businesses should check which product they are being offered in their market rather than assume a feature is included in every WhatsApp Business account.
- Business Agent: Meta said getting started was free and that paid subscriptions would follow. The June 2026 announcement did not establish a universal current subscription price.
- Business Agent Platform: An enterprise-oriented option for building and managing agents with integrations and controls; commercial terms were not specified in the cited announcement.
- WhatsApp Business Platform: Messaging infrastructure for larger-scale and programmatic business operations. Meta’s official product information is at WhatsApp Business. Charges depend on market, messaging and product; there is no single price to apply to every business.
- Meta Verified: The 2024 rollout was market-specific. The historical reported starting price of about $14 monthly should not be treated as a current worldwide rate.
- Other business costs: Separate messaging, integration or software charges may apply depending on the setup. Do not assume that free agent activation makes the entire business-messaging operation free.
How to decide whether it fits your business
Consider it if your conversations are repetitive and structured
Retail and ecommerce businesses with maintained catalogs, appointment-based services, travel and hospitality operators, automotive dealers, real-estate agencies, education providers and local service businesses may benefit when they receive recurring questions, need to qualify leads or serve customers across languages and hours.
- Do you receive enough WhatsApp inquiries for routine replies to consume meaningful staff time?
- Are product details, prices, availability, policies and opening hours maintained in a dependable source of truth?
- Can a person take over quickly when a question is unusual, sensitive or unresolved?
- Can your team review conversations and correct inaccurate or outdated answers?
Be cautious when the cost of a wrong answer is high
Automation is a poor fit for unsupervised professional judgment, regulated advice, safety decisions or eligibility determinations. It can also frustrate customers if the business cannot provide human follow-up, or if its inventory and policies change faster than its information is updated. A claim that an agent can respond in local languages is not evidence of equal quality across every dialect or industry.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose the right level of tooling
The standard WhatsApp Business app may suit a small operation that needs a manual inbox, profile, catalog and basic replies. Native Meta automation may make sense when leads already arrive through WhatsApp, Instagram or Messenger and the workflow is relatively simple. A larger team with ticketing, CRM synchronization, complex routing, permissions or cross-channel reporting may need a help-desk or integration partner in addition to—or instead of—native tools. Meta’s announcement names Shopify and Zendesk as integration examples, not as endorsements or proof that every integration is available to every customer.
Quick Recap
Operational checks before switching on automation
- Set a source of truth. Keep catalog descriptions, variants, prices, inventory, opening hours, booking availability and return policies current wherever the agent draws its answers.
- Define escalation rules. Route complaints, refund disputes, sensitive data and high-risk questions to staff. Make clear what the agent must not decide.
- Make handoff usable. Staff the queue, transfer relevant conversation history and tell customers what response time to expect.
- Review conversations. Check for hallucinations, stale policies, confusing tone and failed handoffs, then update information or rules accordingly.
- Assess data handling. Review connected systems, permissions, retention and customer disclosures. Do not assume that automation or an integration gives business conversations the same privacy properties as personal end-to-end encrypted chats.
- Track the business outcome. Measure whether routine inquiries are resolved, customers reach staff when needed and sales or bookings improve; message volume alone does not show that automation is working well.
