That was an early milestone, not the platform’s current audience: Meta reported 500 million monthly active users on June 16, 2026. Both figures are company-reported, and neither alone shows how often people use Threads or how much money it makes.
What Meta announced in April 2024
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg disclosed the 150-million figure during the company’s Q1 2024 earnings call. It referred to monthly active users (MAUs), not downloads, registered accounts, daily active users, or total activity across Meta’s apps. Zuckerberg had said Threads exceeded 130 million MAUs in February 2024, so the April announcement indicated continued growth. TechCrunch reported the announcement.

Meta did not publish a full methodology for the figure in the cited announcement. It is best read as Meta’s measure of monthly activity, not as an independently audited count of distinct people. Comparisons with other platforms are also imperfect because companies may define and report active users differently.

How Threads grew from launch to 500 million monthly users
| Date | Reported milestone |
|---|---|
| July 5, 2023 | Threads launched. |
| July 2023 | Threads reached 100 million users in less than a week, according to Reuters reporting. |
| February 2024 | Zuckerberg said Threads had more than 130 million monthly active users. |
| April 24, 2024 | Zuckerberg said Threads had more than 150 million monthly active users. |
| July 3, 2024 | Zuckerberg said Threads had more than 175 million monthly active users, as reported by Reuters. |
| August 2025 | Meta was reported to have said Threads exceeded 400 million monthly active users. |
| October 2025 | Threads was reported to have 150 million daily active users. |
| June 16, 2026 | Meta said Threads had reached 500 million monthly active users in its company announcement. |
The figures after July 2024 are company-reported milestones relayed by secondary coverage, not a single independently measured series. Daily and monthly counts are different measures; 150 million daily users in October 2025 should not be compared directly with a monthly figure.

Why the audience grew so quickly
Instagram lowered the sign-up barrier
Threads launched as a text-focused social network connected to Instagram. Existing Instagram users could set up a Threads profile with relatively little friction, and could find people they already followed. Reuters cited Instagram integration as a contributor to the early surge. That distribution advantage helps explain rapid adoption, but it does not establish how many users were newly active on Meta’s services rather than drawn from elsewhere in its ecosystem.
Social networks attract users through existing networks
People have more reason to try a conversation platform when friends, creators, public figures, and brands are already there. Threads also benefited from interest in alternatives to X amid changes to that service. These are plausible contributors to adoption, not proof that X users permanently migrated to Threads.

Product changes broadened how people could use it
Meta added capabilities over time, including web access, custom feeds, fediverse functions, messaging, and communities. In June 2026, Meta highlighted community discovery and navigation, custom community icons, recognition for community champions, local communities beginning with native-language tags in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, Live Chats, and feed controls called “Dear Algo” and “Your Algo.” Taken together, these additions suggest a strategy that expanded from attracting users toward helping them find conversations and shape what appears in their feeds; that is an interpretation of the product announcements, not a stated performance result.
What 150 million monthly users did—and did not—prove
A monthly active user may open an app once in a month or use it several times a day. MAUs show reach, but do not establish daily habit, time spent, posting frequency, retention, creator income, advertising value, or whether Threads was taking meaningful attention from X.

At the July 2024 milestone, Reuters noted that Meta had not disclosed key engagement measures such as daily active users and average time spent per user. Third-party Sensor Tower data cited in the same report suggested that average sessions and daily time spent had fallen substantially from the first month after launch. Those estimates are not Meta’s own figures, and falling averages do not by themselves show that a service is failing: a growing audience can include many occasional users, and averages can shift as a platform expands.
The useful conclusion is narrower: Threads had achieved substantial reach quickly, but public figures available around the 150-million milestone did not establish whether new users were returning often or making the service a daily destination.

Threads was an X competitor, not a one-for-one replacement
Threads and X both support public, text-led conversation, but Threads’ connection to Instagram and its product choices gave it a different position. Instagram head Adam Mosseri said Threads would not simply amplify news in the way some users might expect from X. That was a distinction in product policy, not a claim that Threads has no news or current-events discussion.

For creators, publishers, and brands, a large potential audience is only one consideration. The practical test is whether the people they need are active there, whether conversations and discovery suit their goals, and whether the platform’s tools support their workflow. MAU totals alone cannot answer those questions, and the available figures do not support a definitive like-for-like claim that Threads had overtaken X in audience or attention.

From an unmonetized growth bet to advertising
At the time of the 150-million milestone, Threads was not yet a meaningful advertising business. Reuters reported in July 2024 that the service had no advertising and little or no direct revenue then. This is a time-specific account, not a description of Threads today.
By late 2025, Meta’s earnings commentary was reported to indicate that Threads ads were running globally, with the company expanding formats including video. Engadget covered the ad rollout and daily-user figure. A large audience can make advertising more commercially relevant, but audience size alone does not reveal ad revenue, advertiser returns, or how much Threads contributes to Meta’s results.
What the 2026 milestone says about Threads now
Meta’s June 16, 2026 announcement put Threads at 500 million monthly active users, more than three times the April 2024 milestone. Meta paired that figure with product updates aimed at communities and feed personalization. The milestones indicate that Threads has grown into a large social platform; they do not, without comparable engagement and financial data, settle whether it has matched X’s habitual use or become a durable business on its own.
