Meta did not pay Alexandr Wang $14.3 billion. In June 2025, the company invested roughly that amount in Scale AI for a reported minority stake, while Wang left his CEO role to lead Meta Superintelligence Labs. By December, Financial Times reporting summarized by Futurism described tension between Wang and Mark Zuckerberg over management, strategy and execution. That is evidence of reported internal friction—not confirmation that their relationship had collapsed.
What does “ten zillion dollars” refer to?
It is a joke about the scale of Meta’s reported transaction with Scale AI, not a figure for Wang’s personal compensation. Meta invested approximately $14.3 billion in the company in a deal widely reported as a roughly 49% minority stake. Scale confirmed that Wang was leaving his CEO role to join Meta, but its announcement did not disclose a personal payment to him. The Associated Press and TechCrunch covered the transaction; Scale’s announcement confirmed Wang’s move.
That distinction matters: an investment in a company is not the same thing as a salary or signing bonus for its former chief executive. Separate reports about very large compensation packages offered to some AI researchers should not be added to the Scale deal or treated as Wang’s disclosed pay.
Who is Alexandr Wang, and what was he hired to do?
Wang founded Scale AI and led it as CEO. The company provides data infrastructure and services—including data preparation, annotation and evaluation—that help AI developers build and assess models. That work is important to AI development, but it is different from personally leading a frontier-model research program. Wang’s business-building and operational experience was relevant to Meta’s recruitment; it does not, by itself, establish how suited he was to oversee a large research-and-product organization.

Meta placed Wang at the head of its newly formed Superintelligence Labs, a broad organization drawing together AI foundations, product work, FAIR and a new model effort. Calling him Meta’s “head of AI” is shorthand, not a precise description of a traditional research-chief role or proof that he personally ran every AI project. Meta announced that Wang would lead the lab overall, with Nat Friedman leading AI products and applied research in partnership with him, and Shengjia Zhao serving as chief scientist for the new model effort.
That division of responsibility is significant. Wang had an expansive mandate, but the public structure did not make him the sole decision-maker for all of Meta’s AI work. Bringing an outsider into a leadership role above or alongside established researchers could give the company a fresh operating model; it could also create uncertainty about authority, technical direction and who owns decisions.
What conflict has been reported?
A December 22, 2025 Futurism article, summarizing Financial Times reporting, described several sources of friction. People familiar with the situation reportedly said Wang found Zuckerberg’s close involvement suffocating. Some Meta employees reportedly questioned whether Wang had enough experience to lead a frontier-AI organization at the company’s scale. The same account described disagreements between Wang and longtime Zuckerberg lieutenant Chris Cox over whether Meta should concentrate on catching up with Google and OpenAI’s models or lean more heavily on Meta’s products and data to improve its own systems. These claims rely on unnamed sources and have not been publicly confirmed by Zuckerberg or Wang. “Blowing up the relationship” is the headline’s characterization, not an established event: the available reporting does not establish that Wang resigned, was fired, or had a confirmed personal rupture with Zuckerberg.

The issue is not simply whether Wang had “AI experience.” Scale’s data and evaluation work supports model development, and running a fast-growing AI company involves substantial technical and organizational challenges. The narrower question is whether those strengths transfer to directing frontier-model research, managing prominent scientists and setting priorities across a giant consumer technology company.
Meta’s existing AI organization included researchers with deep scientific credentials, including Yann LeCun, then the company’s chief AI scientist. Reports said LeCun objected to reporting to Wang and later left Meta, but the timing does not establish that Wang personally caused his departure. Coverage instead places LeCun’s exit amid a wider shift toward large language models, product speed and the new superintelligence effort. LeCun had publicly expressed skepticism about the industry’s emphasis on LLMs; Le Monde’s account describes his departure in the context of that reorganization.

Meta’s new structure brought together priorities that can pull in different directions:
- Product integration: applying AI across Facebook, Instagram and other products, where deadlines and user experience matter.
- Frontier-model competition: building models that can compete with systems from Google, OpenAI and other labs.
- Long-term research: pursuing foundational work whose results may take longer to reach products and may not follow the dominant LLM approach.
Disagreements among executives over hiring, computing resources, research timelines, product launches and reporting lines are plausible in such a reorganization. They become more consequential if the leadership structure leaves people unsure who can make the final call.

What does the Vibes example tell us?
The Futurism account linked some internal frustration to the release of Vibes, an AI-generated-video feed associated with Meta’s AI products. Some team members reportedly perceived the launch as rushed. If accurate, that example illustrates a familiar tension: product teams may value speed and visible releases, while researchers may want more time to improve quality or establish what a system can reliably do.

The reporting does not establish that Wang personally ordered the launch or that Vibes was definitively the result of his decisions. It is best understood as an example of the execution pressures described by sources, not proof that a particular executive caused a product problem.

Later reporting described discussion inside Meta’s new lab about substantial changes to AI strategy, including the possibility of moving away from its strongest open-source model toward a closed model. That was reported as internal discussion, not a confirmed final policy. The archived New York Times report and related online coverage reflect that distinction.
The choice would involve a real trade-off. Open releases can build developer adoption and goodwill, while a closed approach could give Meta greater control over access and commercialization. A change could also weaken a source of differentiation if developers and researchers see less reason to build around Meta’s models. The reported discussion does not show that Meta has made that choice.

Is this another metaverse-style pivot?
The comparison is useful at the level of governance: both the metaverse push and the AI push involve a major strategic bet, significant spending and a company-wide reorientation under Zuckerberg’s close leadership. But AI is already connected to Meta’s advertising, recommendations, messaging and consumer products. It is not merely a speculative side business. The relevant question is whether the company can coordinate its research, products and leadership—not whether AI is simply another metaverse.
Meta’s AI bet also has a more complicated organizational shape than a single recruitment. The Scale investment gave Meta a substantial economic stake in an AI infrastructure company, while Wang’s appointment was part of a broader effort to bring together outside hires and existing teams. Calling the deal only an “acqui-hire” would omit that corporate investment; calling it only a financial stake would omit the leadership change.

The strongest conclusion is about organizational risk, not a confirmed breakup. Meta gave Wang a sweeping remit while Zuckerberg remained closely involved, and the new lab had to reconcile product urgency, frontier-model ambitions and established research teams. Reported tension suggests that the structure may be difficult to manage; it does not yet show that the strategy has failed. The test is whether Meta can turn its investment and recruiting into competitive systems while retaining clear authority and a workable balance between research and product delivery.
