The headline “Meta’s next round of layoffs will start next week” referred to a 2023 restructuring—not a newly verified August 2026 announcement. A report published on May 19, 2023 used “next week” to describe the expected final phase of Meta’s previously announced layoffs. In that context, the phrase meant the week of May 22–26, 2023.
Meta’s official schedule was broader: recruiting notifications began in March, technology-group notifications were planned for late April, and business-group notifications were planned for late May. The company later reported that the employee layoffs announced in 2023 had been completed by December 31, 2023.

What “next week” meant
The relative date is the source of most of the confusion. The report circulated on Friday, May 19, 2023, so “next week” referred to Monday, May 22 through Friday, May 26, 2023.
That wording did not mean Meta had suddenly announced a separate layoff program beginning May 22. It referred to the business-group phase of a restructuring that Meta had already announced on March 14, 2023. Meta’s official announcement described that phase as taking place in late May; the company’s filings confirm that notifications to business groups and remaining technology teams occurred during May, but they do not establish a single universal first-notification date for every employee, country, or division.

Meta’s 2023 layoff timeline
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| November 2022 | Meta announced a separate restructuring affecting approximately 11,000 employees. |
| March 14, 2023 | Meta announced another planned reduction of approximately 10,000 employees and the cancellation of approximately 5,000 open roles. |
| March 15, 2023 | Notifications were scheduled to begin with the recruiting organization. |
| Late April 2023 | Technology-group notifications were scheduled. |
| May 19, 2023 | A contemporary report used the phrase “next week” for the expected May layoffs. |
| May 22–26, 2023 | This was the week implied by that May 19 report. |
| Late May 2023 | Business-group notifications were scheduled under Meta’s official plan. |
| December 31, 2023 | Meta’s annual filing said the announced 2023 employee layoffs had been completed. |
Meta’s March 14 announcement is available in its official “Year of Efficiency” statement. Its March 2023 Form 10-Q and 2023 Form 10-K provide additional details about the restructuring and its completion.
How many jobs did Meta plan to eliminate?
Meta’s 2023 plan contained two different figures:
- Approximately 10,000 employees: planned reductions in Meta’s existing workforce.
- Approximately 5,000 open positions: unfilled roles that Meta planned to cancel.
The 5,000 open roles were not employee layoffs. They should not be added to the 10,000 employee reductions and described as 15,000 people losing jobs.

The 2023 plan was also separate from Meta’s approximately 11,000-employee restructuring announced in November 2022. Combining the figures can describe the scale of the two programs, but it would be inaccurate to say that Meta laid off exactly 26,000 current employees.
Which parts of Meta were affected?
Meta’s filings said the restructuring covered both the Family of Apps and Reality Labs. The company’s schedule divided notifications broadly among recruiting, technology, and business groups.
Contemporary coverage associated the technology phase with teams connected to Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Reality Labs. Those reports can help explain how the cuts were experienced, but they should not be treated as a complete official list of affected teams. The precise impact could vary by organization, role, location, and employment arrangement.

The program was international. Meta indicated that notification timing and employment procedures could differ outside the United States, so “global layoffs” should not be read as meaning every employee received notice on the same day.

Meta described the program as part of Mark Zuckerberg’s “Year of Efficiency.” Its stated goals included improving financial performance, reducing costs in a difficult economic environment, flattening the organization, reducing lower-priority work, and focusing resources on higher-priority projects.
Meta also cited slower growth, reduced budgets, real-estate consolidation, and lower hiring rates. Those are the company’s stated reasons. Outside explanations—including pandemic-era overhiring, investor pressure, or a shift toward artificial intelligence—should not be presented as Meta’s confirmed sole cause unless supported by separate evidence.

The company’s first-quarter 2023 results and second-quarter 2023 results provide contemporaneous investor-facing context, but the restructuring announcement itself remains the clearest source for Meta’s stated rationale.

Not necessarily. A notification date, final working date, payroll date, and termination date can be different. A scheduled notification phase therefore does not prove that every affected employee lost access or stopped working on the day notices were issued.

Actual terms could vary by location, employment status, individual circumstances, and applicable law.

International employees could also face different consultation requirements, notice periods, benefits, and immigration considerations. The U.S. severance description should not be treated as a global policy.
What the later filings confirmed
Meta’s 2023 Form 10-K closed the loop on the timeline: the company reported that employees in recruiting, technology, and business groups had been notified from March through May 2023 and that the announced employee layoffs had been completed by December 31, 2023.
That later confirmation is important because it distinguishes a completed 2023 program from a current claim. A headline that still says the layoffs “will start next week” needs its original publication date attached; without that date, the wording can falsely suggest a new event.
Quick Recap
How to read the headline accurately
- Read “next week” as a relative date tied to the original May 19, 2023 report.
- Interpret the May cuts as the final phase of the March-announced 2023 restructuring.
- Use “approximately 10,000 employee reductions,” not an exact count of current employees.
- Keep the 5,000 canceled open roles separate from layoffs.
- Use “late May” for Meta’s official schedule rather than claiming that every location began on May 22.
- Do not treat reposts or aggregators as independent confirmation of every detail.
