Meta is forecasting $125 billion to $145 billion in capital expenditure for 2026 as it builds AI infrastructure and expands AI across its products. That is a corporate spending forecast—not a documented €62 billion personal investment by Mark Zuckerberg—and it does not establish that AI has become a new “golden goose.” Meta has not abandoned Reality Labs or its metaverse-related work, either.
What does the €62 billion claim actually mean?
The headline’s wording makes two claims that need separating: that Zuckerberg personally will put up €62 billion, and that this spending is already a proven profit engine. Neither is established by Meta’s filings. The amount appears to be a converted, rounded or repackaged figure connected to Meta’s AI spending narrative, but the available primary filings do not document a standalone €62 billion transaction or a personal commitment by Zuckerberg.
Meta’s first-quarter 2026 Form 10-Q instead gives a company-wide capital-expenditure forecast of $125 billion to $145 billion for 2026. The forecast supports AI infrastructure and the core business; it is not identified as a single AI project, and it is a forecast rather than money already spent. Meta’s Q1 2026 Form 10-Q
Those distinctions matter. Capital expenditure generally covers long-lived assets such as data centers and equipment. It is not a measure of all AI-related costs: research salaries, operating costs, energy, acquisitions and other expenses may be recorded elsewhere. Nor can the full capital-spending range be described as AI-only investment.

Is Zuckerberg personally funding the spending?
No reviewed primary filing supports that interpretation. Meta Platforms is the entity making the capital-spending plans. Zuckerberg leads the company as its founder, chairman and chief executive, and has a central role in its strategic direction; that does not make Meta’s corporate spending his personal cash investment. A founder’s ownership stake and influence are different from the company’s use of its balance sheet and operating resources.
Meta also disclosed up to $14.72 billion in contingent obligations for cloud capacity over five years as of March 31, 2026. The obligations are subject to conditions that include whether the provider can sell that capacity to other customers. They illustrate the scale and complexity of securing computing resources, not a €62 billion personal payment by Zuckerberg. Meta’s Q1 2026 Form 10-Q

What is Meta investing in?
The spending is aimed at a mix of computing capacity, products and existing business systems rather than one identifiable “golden goose.” Meta’s filings describe AI as supporting its recommendation and ranking systems, advertising tools, generative-AI experiences and product-development efficiency. In practice, the broader effort includes data centers and specialized hardware, AI models, technical talent, assistants and agents, and infrastructure that may support both AI and Meta’s established apps.
Potential sources of future value include better ad targeting and performance, AI-assisted content discovery, assistants within Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger, business messaging agents, AI glasses and other wearables, and possibly external AI or computing services. These are possible routes to returns, not proof that each is already a meaningful standalone business. Did the metaverse collapse—and has Meta moved on?
“Collapse” is too absolute. Meta’s metaverse ambitions have underperformed the scale and speed implied by its original strategic push, and Reality Labs remains a large cost. But Meta continues to invest in Reality Labs, including VR, Horizon, augmented-reality work and wearables. The more accurate description is that AI has become a stronger strategic priority while immersive technology remains an expensive, longer-term bet.
Reality Labs reduced Meta’s 2025 operating profit by approximately $19.19 billion, and Meta said it expected the unit’s 2026 operating loss to remain similar. That figure is the segment’s impact on operating profit, not a simple cash-loss measure, and Reality Labs covers more than Horizon Worlds or the metaverse alone: it also includes hardware, VR, AR and wearables. Why investors compare the AI push with the metaverse bet
The resemblance is the investment pattern: a major technology ambition requires heavy spending before demand and monetization are fully proven, while Meta’s established advertising business helps fund the experiment. That makes the comparison useful as a warning about execution and returns, but it does not mean the two bets are identical.
- AI is already embedded in Meta’s core business. Meta says it uses AI to improve recommendations, content ranking and advertising systems, so some benefits may appear as stronger performance in existing products rather than revenue from a separate AI service.
- The potential customer base is different. Meta can distribute AI features through apps with enormous existing audiences, whereas the metaverse depended more heavily on adoption of a new hardware and platform ecosystem.
- Infrastructure has options, but also risks. Computing capacity could support internal workloads or potentially be offered to outside customers. Reuters’ analysis of Meta’s computing strategy describes that possibility, while also highlighting questions about how efficiently the company can use its capacity. Reuters analysis hosted by Euronext
- Capacity can lose value. AI hardware and data centers require substantial capital, and technology can change quickly. If demand falls short or equipment becomes less useful, capacity can be underused or produce weaker returns than expected.
- Competition and risk are substantial. Meta is competing with Google, Microsoft, Amazon, OpenAI and others. Copyright disputes, privacy limits, child-safety and consumer-protection scrutiny, antitrust constraints and harmful or inaccurate outputs may also affect products and economics.
Is Meta’s AI investment already paying off?
There is evidence of operational use, but that is not the same as proving a standalone AI business. Meta says AI supports recommendations, advertising and product development. Those benefits may help defend or improve its existing business; the available filings do not quantify a specific return attributable to AI or establish that consumer assistants, agents or enterprise services are already producing profits at a scale that validates the spending.

How to judge whether AI becomes a real profit engine
Rather than treating “golden goose” as a financial result, look for evidence that connects the investment to durable returns:
- Revenue conversion: Does Meta disclose meaningful revenue from AI services, agents, subscriptions or external computing, beyond improvements to existing advertising?
- Advertising gains: Are AI features measurably improving advertiser outcomes, ad pricing or conversion enough to offset added costs?
- Capital efficiency: How much incremental revenue and operating profit follows each wave of data-center and equipment spending? Are those returns sufficient relative to the capital committed?
- Use and retention: Do people return to AI features voluntarily, and do businesses adopt agents or services consistently rather than merely encountering default placements?
- Cost control: Can Meta lower the cost of training and running models while maintaining useful performance, and keep computing assets well utilized?
- Disclosure and accountability: Does management provide enough detail on AI-related costs, revenue and milestones for investors to assess progress rather than relying on broad promises?
- Portfolio discipline: Do Reality Labs losses stabilize or produce clearer commercial outcomes while Meta funds AI, or does the company sustain large speculative commitments without adequate returns?
Meta’s own filings and later reporting describe an enormous strategic commitment, not a guaranteed payoff. Reuters reported that investors were weighing the scale of the spending against uncertainty over the returns. Reuters analysis hosted by Euronext
