JetBlue—not an Amazon-owned airline—is the first announced airline customer for Amazon’s satellite-internet network. JetBlue and Amazon announced the commercial agreement on September 4, 2025, when the network was still called Project Kuiper. Amazon renamed Project Kuiper Amazon Leo on November 13, 2025. JetBlue says installation on part of its fleet is planned to begin in 2027, with complimentary Fly‑Fi continuing on equipped aircraft. The announcement is a meaningful aviation commitment, but it is not evidence that Amazon Leo is already broadly available to passengers.

What Amazon and JetBlue actually agreed to

The agreement makes JetBlue the first airline publicly committed to implementing Amazon’s former Project Kuiper, now Amazon Leo, for commercial inflight connectivity. The system is intended to enhance JetBlue’s existing Fly‑Fi service rather than introduce onboard internet for the first time.

JetBlue announced the deal on September 4, 2025. The airline says a phased installation will begin on a portion of its fleet in 2027. The announcement did not identify the aircraft count, routes, installation milestones, contract value or service-level guarantees.

Question What is established
Who is the airline customer? JetBlue is the first announced airline customer for Project Kuiper/Amazon Leo.
When does deployment start? JetBlue says installation on part of its fleet is planned to begin in 2027.
Will passengers pay? JetBlue and Amazon describe the upgraded service as complimentary Fly‑Fi on equipped aircraft.
How many planes and routes? Not stated in the announcement.

JetBlue’s announcement is a commercial customer commitment, not a demonstration flight or a promise that every aircraft will be converted immediately.

Why JetBlue is a logical first customer

JetBlue already positions Fly‑Fi as a differentiator. The airline introduced Fly‑Fi in 2013 and has described itself as the first major U.S. airline to offer free high-speed Wi‑Fi across its fleet, according to its announcement. Amazon is therefore helping JetBlue upgrade an existing customer proposition: faster and more consistent connectivity, rather than paid internet replacing no internet.

Keeping access complimentary also gives JetBlue a clear reason to install the system. Travelers would not need to make a separate purchase decision before testing the upgraded connection, while JetBlue could use better onboard internet to support its broader service strategy.

How Amazon Leo is supposed to work in aircraft

Low-Earth-orbit satellites

Amazon describes Leo as a low-Earth-orbit constellation operating roughly 590 to 630 kilometers above Earth. That is far below geostationary satellites, which orbit at approximately 36,000 kilometers. The shorter distance can reduce signal travel time, but passenger latency depends on the entire network: satellite coverage, gateway locations, aircraft equipment, network traffic, weather and regulatory conditions.

Because the satellites move relative to an aircraft, the terminal must hand connections from one satellite to another as the plane travels. A sufficiently large constellation and ground network are necessary for consistent service on long or oceanic routes.

The aviation terminal

Amazon says its aviation terminal is a full-duplex, Ka-band phased-array antenna capable of supporting download speeds of up to 1 Gbps on a single device under stated conditions. That is a terminal or link capability claim, not a promise that each passenger will receive gigabit service.

  • Terminal maximum: up to 1 Gbps download for a single device, according to Amazon.
  • Aircraft-wide capacity: not publicly specified in the JetBlue announcement.
  • Individual passenger speed: no guarantee was published.
  • Latency: expected by the companies to improve over some legacy geostationary systems, but no independent passenger measurement was provided.

Amazon later described an Amazon Leo Ultra terminal with claimed speeds of up to 1 Gbps down and 400 Mbps up in its November 2025 hardware update. That later product claim should not be read as a guarantee for JetBlue aircraft, since JetBlue has not published its final equipment configuration or passenger speed targets.

What passengers may notice—and what is not promised

Amazon and JetBlue say the LEO system is intended to support faster browsing, streaming, cloud applications, video calls and more reliable access than many older inflight systems. Those are stated goals, not independently verified results for JetBlue passengers.

  • JetBlue passengers cannot use Amazon Leo on the basis of this announcement alone; the stated rollout begins in 2027.
  • Not every JetBlue aircraft is confirmed for installation. The plan covers a portion of the fleet.
  • Complimentary Fly‑Fi is intended to continue on aircraft using the new system, but the companies have not published a detailed policy for every future feature or aircraft type.
  • Route-level availability remains unknown. Coverage, aircraft certification, regulatory approvals and constellation density can vary by route and region.
  • A “1 Gbps” headline does not mean every traveler receives 1 Gbps; onboard bandwidth is shared and affected by demand and network conditions.

Is Amazon Leo operational yet?

Amazon was still building the network when the JetBlue agreement was announced. Amazon said it had deployed more than 100 satellites at that point. In its November 13, 2025 rebrand announcement, Amazon said more than 150 satellites were in orbit and that the renamed Amazon Leo constellation was expanding.

Amazon’s November update said initial network testing was underway and that the company was preparing for broader commercial service. That status is different from universal coverage or completed airline deployment. JetBlue’s 2027 start date reflects the remaining work in satellite launches, ground infrastructure, aircraft certification and installation.

Amazon Leo versus Starlink

Starlink has a first-mover advantage in commercial low-Earth-orbit broadband and established aviation adoption. JetBlue’s agreement gives Amazon a high-profile airline reference customer, but it does not show that Amazon has matched Starlink’s operational scale, coverage or service maturity.

The competitive significance is strategic: Amazon is demonstrating that Leo is aimed at aviation as well as homes, businesses, governments, vehicles and ships. JetBlue provides a visible use case while Amazon continues building the constellation. Airlines will ultimately weigh coverage, capacity, installation downtime, certification, pricing, reliability and contractual guarantees—not just the theoretical speed of an antenna.

Amazon’s aviation ambitions also include an agreement with Airbus to explore integrating Leo connectivity into Airbus’s aircraft catalog. That is separate from the JetBlue deal:

Relationship Meaning
JetBlue Airline customer planning a phased passenger-service rollout.
Airbus Aircraft-manufacturer relationship exploring catalog integration; not a commitment to equip every Airbus aircraft.
Amazon Leo Satellite network and connectivity provider.

The Airbus arrangement was described as exploration and integration, not confirmation of an aircraft-wide installation program.

The practical risks and unknowns

  • Rollout timing: “Beginning in 2027” does not mean the fleet will be completed that year.
  • Aircraft modification: Phased-array terminals require certification, maintenance planning and aircraft downtime.
  • Network buildout: Airline performance depends on enough satellites, gateways and spectrum capacity being available along each route.
  • Shared capacity: A terminal maximum is not equivalent to a per-seat speed.
  • Weather and obstructions: Atmospheric conditions and aircraft installation details can affect link performance.
  • Commercial terms: The contract value, fleet size, installation pace and service-level commitments were not disclosed.
  • Competitive response: Starlink and established inflight-connectivity providers can respond with their own coverage, pricing and service improvements.

Why the announcement matters

JetBlue’s deal validates aviation as a target market for Amazon Leo and gives Amazon a customer reference before the constellation reaches full maturity. For JetBlue, it is an attempt to strengthen a free-Wi‑Fi advantage that the airline has marketed for more than a decade.

The near-term takeaway is narrower than the headline suggests: JetBlue has committed to a future, phased Amazon Leo installation, not a live fleet-wide replacement of its current system. The announcement is important because it establishes a commercial path into aviation; the quality and reach of that service will depend on the network and aircraft rollout still to come.
