Meta announced a $50 million Creator Fund for Horizon Worlds on February 20, 2025. It was not a grant that creators could apply to receive as a fixed payment: Meta described monthly bonuses tied to a world’s time spent, retention, and in-world purchases. The announcement also covered a creator program, competitions, expanded commerce, and an early-access desktop editor. The launch materials do not establish whether the fund or the same terms remain available in 2026.
What Meta announced
Meta presented the fund as one part of a broader effort to help creators build, earn, and reach users across mobile, web, mixed reality, Horizon, and Facebook surfaces. The February 2025 package included:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- A $50 million Creator Fund with monthly, performance-related bonuses.
- An expanded Meta Horizon Creator Program offering resources, support, and earning opportunities.
- A planned 2025 series of creator competitions, including a $1 million mobile-focused competition.
- Expansion of in-world purchases and Meta Credits to additional countries, beginning February 24, 2025.
- Early access to a desktop editor with custom-model import, TypeScript, and mobile optimization tools.
These were separate opportunities with different mechanics. The announcement described a fund, not proof that Meta had already paid out the full $50 million or that every creator would receive money. Meta’s announcement, dated February 20, 2025, is the primary source for the launch details.
How the fund’s bonuses were supposed to work
Meta said monthly bonuses would reflect how much a world contributed to the wider Horizon ecosystem. It named three factors: time spent, retention, and in-world purchases. That points to engagement and commerce, rather than a simple payment for publishing a world or collecting downloads.

Meta did not publish a payout formula in the launch announcement. It did not state how the factors were weighted, what minimum thresholds applied, whether there was a minimum or maximum payment, which reporting period counted, or when payments would arrive. The announcement also did not specify tax documentation, whether teams or companies could receive bonuses, or whether creators had to enroll before activity counted. Without those terms, creators could not calculate a likely payment from the announcement alone.
Creator-program membership should not be confused with an automatic fund award. Meta described the program as a route to opportunities and support, but did not promise a bonus to every member or establish that every submitted world qualified.

Meta described the desktop editor as available in early access to creators aged 13 or older in countries where Horizon Worlds was available. That age threshold refers to editor access in the announcement; it should not be taken as a complete statement of fund eligibility or payment requirements. These are historical launch details, not a verified 2026 country or eligibility list. Check Meta’s current program terms before committing production time.

How creators could earn: four distinct routes
| Route | What Meta described | What the launch announcement did not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Creator Fund | Monthly bonuses based on time spent, retention, and in-world purchases. | The calculation formula, thresholds, payment limits, or whether the fund remains active. |
| Competitions | A 2025 competition series for Creator Program members, including a $1 million mobile-focused competition. | Complete judging rules, individual awards, or eligibility details in the launch post. |
| In-world purchases | Sales of digital items and experiences, a separate commerce path from fund bonuses. | Revenue share, full country availability, or current commerce terms. |
| Creator Program support | Resources, dedicated support, and access to earning opportunities. | A guaranteed income, universal acceptance, or a complete description of member benefits. |
Meta said the $1 million mobile competition was scheduled to begin March 11, 2025. VentureBeat reported the name “Mobile Genre Showdown” and a 30-creator award structure, but those details are not in the official launch post; treat them as secondary reporting, not as confirmed competition terms. VentureBeat’s February 22, 2025 report provides that additional account.
For commerce, Meta said expansion of in-world purchases and Meta Credits to 18 additional countries would begin February 24, 2025. Purchase revenue was not the same thing as a fund bonus or competition prize, and the announcement does not support assuming that creators or buyers everywhere had access.

Why mobile mattered to Meta’s strategy
Meta’s stated rationale was that mobile could bring Horizon content to people without Quest headsets and let them play or socialize with friends joining from different devices. The fund therefore served not only as a creator incentive but also as a way to encourage content for a wider potential audience. PocketGamer.biz characterized the move as a shift toward mobile content; that is an interpretation of the strategy, not evidence that Meta was abandoning VR. PocketGamer.biz’s February 24, 2025 coverage discusses that framing.
Cross-device reach creates a design problem as well as an opportunity. Touch controls, conventional screens, shorter sessions, device performance, spatial interaction, audio, and multiplayer behavior can all differ between mobile and a headset. A world that works in mixed reality may need significant redesign for flat screens; a mobile-first experience may not make full use of immersive hardware. The launch post establishes Meta’s cross-platform direction, not a compatibility guarantee that every world would work identically everywhere.

What the desktop editor added
The editor was intended to let creators work on a PC using more traditional 2D and 3D workflows. Meta highlighted custom-model imports, TypeScript for more complex game logic, and mobile optimization tools. These features connected the financial pitch to production: creators needed ways to make and adapt worlds for devices beyond VR.
The editor was in early access, so Meta was not presenting it as a mature, fully settled production environment. The company said additional tools would roll out during 2025; launch capabilities should not be treated as a permanent feature list. At launch, generative-AI tools for sound effects, ambient audio, and TypeScript generation were limited to the United States. Meta did not describe them as tools that could generate complete games.
What a creator should weigh before building for the opportunity
- Reach: Does the core experience make sense for people who do not own a Quest headset?
- Retention: Since Meta named retention as a bonus factor, repeat play may matter. That is an inference from the stated metrics, not a disclosed payout formula. Favor worthwhile replay value over mechanics designed only to prolong sessions.
- Mobile usability: Consider onboarding, touch or conventional controls, short sessions, and performance on less powerful devices alongside headset interactions.
- Commerce: Decide whether digital purchases genuinely improve the experience. Sales and bonuses are different revenue paths, and neither should be treated as guaranteed income.
- Production fit: TypeScript and model-import tools may suit creators comfortable with conventional development workflows; the announcement did not quantify the learning curve.
- Platform dependence: Building primarily inside Horizon may be a poor fit for developers who need platform-neutral tools, independent distribution, or revenue unaffected by Meta’s policies.
- Current terms: Confirm program access, country eligibility, payment rules, content requirements, cross-platform behavior, and whether the fund is still active before making a business plan around it.
What the announcement cannot tell creators
Meta’s February 2025 post establishes what the company announced, not what the program ultimately delivered. It does not establish whether the fund remained open in August 2026, whether the full $50 million was allocated, whether competitions continued, whether the editor left early access, or whether the bonus formula or country list changed. Nor does the announcement demonstrate that the fund generated sustainable creator income or platform growth.
For personal-finance planning, the key distinction is between a possible, variable platform bonus and reliable recurring income. Until current terms and payment history are clear, creators should not budget around a particular award or treat the headline fund size as money available to them.
