On Instagram, the confirmed change covered creators in the United States and India; contemporary reporting described the Facebook program as ending for participating Facebook Reels creators as well. Existing Instagram deals were honored until their individual expiration dates.
This was not a complete end to earning money from Reels. Meta shifted toward advertising- and performance-based programs, while also continuing to test tools such as subscriptions, gifts, branded-content features and limited bonuses.

What Meta actually ended
Reels Play was an invitation-only incentive program. Invited creators received payments under individual deal terms that could depend on Reel plays, the number of Reels published, themed content, minimum thresholds and a defined bonus period. Rates and targets were not necessarily identical for every creator.
“Reels bonuses” is broader shorthand. It can refer to Reels Play or to later, separate bonus experiments. Reels Play was not the same product as advertising revenue, subscriptions, gifts or sponsorship income.

Who was affected?
The platforms and markets should not be treated as identical:
- Instagram: Meta’s official help-center language identifies the United States and India as markets where new and renewed Reels Play deals stopped on March 9, 2023.
- Facebook: Contemporary reporting described the change as affecting Facebook creators participating in the Reels bonus program.
- Other Instagram markets: The program was invitation-only and market-specific, so the U.S. change should not automatically be described as a simultaneous worldwide shutdown.
Eligibility has always depended on the creator’s account, location, content and the specific program being offered. A creator’s earlier participation did not guarantee another invitation.
What happened to active deals?
Meta said existing Instagram Reels Play deals would be honored until they expired. That distinction matters:
Rank #2
- No new deal: The creator was not invited into a new bonus period.
- No renewal: An existing deal ended without another period being offered.
- Active agreement: The creator could continue earning under the deal’s terms, subject to its targets, eligible content and payout rules.
- No permanent entitlement: Previous participation did not guarantee future bonuses.
Creators should save dashboard notices and records showing the deal period, eligible plays, thresholds and payment status before a program expires.
What replaced Reels Play?
Ads on Reels
In May 2023, Meta described a revised Ads on Reels model for Facebook. Rather than paying a fixed or benchmark-based Reels Play bonus, the model was designed to tie payouts to the performance of public Reels. Meta said the payment would be based on Reel performance rather than the revenue generated by ads shown on one specific Reel.
Ads on Reels was not an automatic replacement for every creator. Testing, invitations, eligibility rules and availability varied by account and market.

Facebook Content Monetization
Meta later announced Facebook Content Monetization as a unified program combining:
- In-stream ads
- Ads on Reels
- The Performance Bonus
The program was designed to cover eligible Reels, longer videos, photos and text posts through one system. It does not mean that every former Reels Play participant qualifies, nor does it guarantee the same earnings, rates or thresholds as an earlier deal.
Instagram’s other tools
Instagram continued to test or offer other monetization features, including subscriptions, gifts, branded-content tools and limited bonus campaigns. In November 2023, Meta announced an invite-only holiday bonus for selected creators in the United States, South Korea and Japan, later describing New Year’s and spring renewals.
Those experiments show why “Meta ended Reels bonuses” is too broad when used to describe every possible Instagram incentive. The standalone Reels Play program ended or stopped renewing in the specified markets, but later products could have different names, terms and eligibility.
Reels Play vs. Ads on Reels vs. Content Monetization
| Program | How it works | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Reels Play | Invitation-only bonus deals based on individual targets such as plays or content creation. | Deal-based, temporary and not guaranteed to renew. |
| Ads on Reels | Advertising-linked monetization using a performance-based model described by Meta. | Availability and eligibility depend on rollout, market and account. |
| Facebook Content Monetization | A broader Facebook system covering Reels, longer videos, photos and text posts. | It is not an automatic continuation of a former bonus deal. |
| Subscriptions, gifts and branded content | Audience support or commercial partnerships rather than a Reel-play bonus. | Each product has separate rules, audience requirements and commercial terms. |
What creators should check now
- Open the relevant dashboard. On Facebook, check Professional Dashboard → Monetization or Meta Business Suite’s monetization area. On Instagram, check the Professional Dashboard and its monetization tools or support area. Labels can vary by app version, account and country.
- Identify the actual product. Do not assume a “bonus” notice refers to Reels Play. Confirm whether it is an ad, performance, subscription, gift or branded-content program.
- Review eligibility and policy status. Reach alone is not enough. Account status, geography, rights ownership, content type and policy compliance can affect monetization.
- Preserve deal records. Keep screenshots or downloaded records of terms, dates, thresholds, eligible plays and payout notices.
- Diversify income. Sponsorships, affiliate revenue, digital products, subscriptions, gifts and other platforms can reduce dependence on a temporary Meta incentive.
Instagram says creators can request monetization support through the app’s Professional Dashboard for areas including bonuses, branded content, gifts and subscriptions: Instagram monetization support.
Common mistakes that can reduce or eliminate earnings
Confusing views with eligibility
A Reel can receive substantial reach and still fail monetization requirements because of account, rights, content or policy issues.
Best Value
Instagram’s monetization policies restrict or exclude formats and behaviors such as unoriginal content, engagement bait, misinformation, static-image videos, slideshows, looping videos and embedded ads.
Deleting or changing qualifying content
Under Reels Play rules, deleted Reels, rights claims, third-party watermarks, inauthentic engagement and certain policy violations could affect eligibility or payout credit.
Assuming a new program pays the same
A migration from Reels Play to a performance-based product can change how money is calculated. Meta’s description of Facebook Content Monetization does not establish identical RPMs, thresholds or account-level results.

Creator screenshots may reflect an account-specific notice, regional rollout or misunderstanding between programs. Use the monetization information shown in your own dashboard and Meta’s current terms rather than assuming another creator’s status applies to you.
What this means for creators in 2026
The verified historical point is clear: Meta ended new and renewed Reels Play deals in the affected markets in 2023 and honored existing Instagram deals through expiration. The later replacement strategy moved toward advertising and broader performance-based monetization.
However, the available announcements do not establish the complete status of every Reels monetization product in every country and for every account in 2026. A creator should therefore treat the Professional Dashboard, current eligibility notices and applicable terms as more authoritative than a generalized headline.
