Yes—but only in the narrower sense that Meta shut down its dedicated virtual workplace. Meta discontinued Horizon Workrooms as a standalone app on February 16, 2026. It also changed related commercial Quest and managed-service offerings. That does not mean Meta abandoned all virtual reality, mixed reality, Horizon products, or spatial-computing research.
What Meta actually discontinued
Horizon Workrooms was Meta’s VR collaboration product, launched in open beta on August 19, 2021. It was designed as a workplace rather than a conventional social game, with virtual meeting rooms, avatars, spatial audio, whiteboards, screen sharing, remote-desktop access and participation from a regular computer.

The product was meant to make remote work feel more like being together in the same room. Quest users could meet inside shared virtual spaces, work with virtual screens and interact with digital whiteboards, while some participants could join without a headset.

For users, the practical result is simple: Workrooms is no longer a viable meeting platform. A Quest headset may still work with other applications, but the Meta virtual office itself is gone.
The shutdown timeline
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| August 19, 2021 | Meta announced Horizon Workrooms in open beta. |
| February 16, 2026 | Horizon Workrooms was discontinued as a standalone app. |
| February 20, 2026 | Changes to commercial Quest hardware sales and Meta Horizon managed services took effect, according to contemporaneous reporting and Meta community references. |
| May 31, 2026 | Workplace from Meta fully shut down. This was a separate enterprise social-network product, not the VR office. |
| June 15, 2026 | Horizon Worlds stopped being available on Quest, while continuing in a mobile-focused form. |
The commercial-offering changes matter because they make Workrooms’ closure more than the retirement of one app. Meta also reduced or restructured parts of its business-oriented Quest strategy. However, the exact effects on support and features varied by customer and should not be treated as a single, fully documented enterprise policy. TechRadar’s reporting and Meta’s 2026 Quest update provide the relevant context.
Workrooms was not the same as Workplace
Meta used two similar names for very different products:

- Workplace from Meta: an enterprise social network for posts, groups, messaging and internal communication.
Workplace’s shutdown was announced separately. Normal access ended August 31, 2025, read-and-download access continued until May 31, 2026, and the service then fully closed. Its retirement should not be presented as the date Workrooms ended.
Meta’s Workplace announcement is the relevant source for that separate timeline.

Did Meta abandon the metaverse?
That headline is too broad. A more accurate description is that Meta pulled back from a specific version of its metaverse strategy: the dedicated VR workplace and a Quest-centered social-world model.
Meta has not said that all VR, mixed reality, artificial intelligence, Horizon OS or glasses work is ending. Its broader strategy materials continue to describe investment in AI, mixed reality, wearable computing and longer-term spatial-computing research. Meanwhile, Horizon Worlds moved toward mobile rather than remaining primarily a Quest VR destination.

Meta’s 2024 strategy overview and its 2026 Horizon transition notice support that distinction.
So the defensible conclusion is not “Meta killed the metaverse.” It is: Meta killed its dedicated VR office and substantially reworked its Horizon strategy, while retaining broader ambitions in VR, mixed reality, AI and glasses.
Why the virtual-office idea faced a difficult market
Meta has not established one official reason why Workrooms was discontinued. Several structural challenges help explain why a VR office was difficult to make mainstream, but they should be treated as industry analysis rather than confirmed company causation.

Headsets add friction
A video call usually requires a browser, phone or laptop. A VR meeting requires a headset, charging, updates, account setup, physical space and time to put on and remove the device. That extra friction is hard to justify for a short meeting or a discussion centered on documents and spreadsheets.

The value is uneven across meetings
Spatial audio, shared rooms and 3D objects can add value to design reviews, training and brainstorming. They are less obviously useful for a routine status update or screen-sharing session. A workplace cannot assume every meeting benefits from the same immersive treatment.
Everyone must participate for network effects to work
A virtual room becomes more useful as more colleagues join it. But asking an entire team to obtain, learn and regularly wear headsets creates an adoption barrier. Desktop participation reduces that barrier, but can also weaken the reason to use a VR-first platform.
Enterprise buyers need durability
Companies buying hardware and building workflows around a platform need predictable support, identity management, security controls, device administration, accessibility options and data export. A product presented as an evolving or experimental experience is harder to make part of a long-term IT plan.
Comfort, privacy and accessibility matter
Motion sensitivity, headset weight, vision needs, captions, seated use, physical space and the privacy implications of cameras, room scans, voice data and body or eye tracking all affect whether VR is appropriate for a workplace.

What Workrooms did well
The shutdown does not mean Workrooms was without useful ideas. It connected conventional computer work with a stronger sense of co-presence than an ordinary grid of video windows.
- Shared rooms made meetings feel spatial and persistent.
- Spatial audio helped participants identify where conversations were coming from.
- Whiteboards supported brainstorming and informal collaboration.
- Screen sharing and remote-desktop access connected VR to normal work.
- Avatar-based participation offered a consistent way to join the room.
- Desk, keyboard, hand-tracking and mixed-reality features tried to make headset use practical rather than purely entertainment-focused.
Those features remain useful criteria when evaluating alternatives, but they are not assets that automatically transfer to another platform.
What happens to Workrooms data?
Reporting and migration guidance indicated that Workrooms data, including persistent rooms and meeting history, was expected to be deleted after the shutdown. Because the publicly available evidence is not a complete official data-retention policy, organizations should treat that conclusion as attributed rather than assuming every category of data was handled identically.
Separate the following before assessing what was lost:
- Workrooms data: rooms, meeting history and other information stored inside the service.
- Local files: documents, screenshots, recordings and 3D assets saved on a computer or local drive.
- Original project files: models and other assets stored in a company repository.
- External service data: calendar events, Teams or Zoom records, and files stored in cloud platforms outside Workrooms.
Teams should preserve local and source-repository assets rather than assume they can later be downloaded from Workrooms. Migration resources from Arthur and Glue describe reconstruction and replacement considerations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who is affected?
- Individual Quest owners: Workrooms is no longer a usable Meta meeting application.
- Remote teams: recurring meetings and virtual rooms need a new home.
- IT departments: headset purchasing, account management, support and device policies may need review.
- Training and design teams: shared 3D spaces and whiteboards may need to be recreated.
- Developers and creators: Workrooms-specific rooms and workflows may not transfer automatically.
- Commercial Quest customers: hardware and managed-service changes may affect procurement and support assumptions.
Existing Quest hardware is not automatically useless. It may still run other VR productivity, collaboration and immersive-event applications. The end of Meta’s branded service is not the end of work-related use on every Quest device.
What should former Workrooms users do now?
- Inventory important content. List rooms, whiteboards, 3D models, documents, recordings, screenshots, calendars and integrations that the team still needs.
- Recover files from outside Workrooms. Check local drives, shared folders, cloud storage and original project repositories.
- Separate meeting needs from immersive needs. If the team mainly shares slides and documents, a standard collaboration suite may be the better replacement.
- Test non-headset participation. Confirm whether desktop and mobile users can join before committing to a VR-first workflow.
- Review administration. Check SSO, provisioning, device management, security, audit requirements and support terms.
- Review privacy and accessibility. Ask how the replacement handles voice, video, room scans, eye tracking, avatars, captions, seated use and motion sensitivity.
- Pilot before buying hardware. Test the workflow with the actual devices, network, identity system and meeting formats your organization uses.
- Check vendor durability. Review export tools, roadmap, support commitments and contractual protections before rebuilding critical workflows.
Alternatives to Horizon Workrooms
There is no universal successor. The right choice depends on whether the team wants ordinary meetings, virtual monitors, persistent rooms or 3D project collaboration.
| Option | Best for | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Immersed | Virtual monitors, individual immersive workspaces and shared VR rooms. | Immersed positions itself as a destination for former Workrooms users and claims support for up to five virtual monitors. Verify current device support, pricing and enterprise administration. |
| Arthur | Structured enterprise meetings, persistent spaces, avatars, spatial audio and screen sharing. | It may be excessive for small teams needing occasional calls. Current pricing and contract terms should be confirmed directly. |
| Glue | 3D collaboration, virtual project rooms and teams needing desktop participation. | It may be too specialized for ordinary office work. Verify integrations, export options and current pricing. |
| Microsoft Teams immersive events | Microsoft 365 organizations that want scheduled immersive experiences on PC, Mac or Meta Quest 3. | Teams immersive events are not necessarily a persistent virtual-office replacement. Device and administrator requirements apply. |
| Teams, Zoom, Google Meet or an existing collaboration suite | Frequent meetings, broad device compatibility and low-friction participation. | These tools generally do not recreate the same persistent 3D-room experience. |
Independent vendors are alternatives, not Meta-endorsed successors. Before switching, compare headset requirements, desktop access, persistent rooms, 3D-content support, enterprise controls, accessibility, privacy, interoperability and total cost.
The personal-finance and business-cost lesson
For individuals, the main financial risk is buying hardware for a discontinued service and then discovering that the replacement requires a separate subscription or different devices. For businesses, the larger cost is not just the headset. It includes replacement cycles, software licenses, onboarding, IT labor, support, training and lost productivity during migration.
A conventional meeting platform will often be the financially sensible choice when meetings are short, participants use mixed devices or the work is mostly documents and spreadsheets. VR is easier to justify when the value comes from spatial presence, shared 3D models, immersive training or virtual-monitor workflows that users perform regularly.
Do not buy a new headset solely because it is compatible with one alternative. Confirm the vendor’s current support policy, device requirements, export capabilities and commercial roadmap first.
Bottom line
Meta did discontinue its metaverse office: Horizon Workrooms ended as a standalone app on February 16, 2026. Related commercial Quest and managed-service changes made the retreat from Meta’s workplace-VR push more significant.
But “Meta abandoned the metaverse” goes too far. Meta continues to pursue VR, mixed reality, AI, glasses and spatial computing, while Horizon Worlds has shifted toward mobile. The more useful question for former Workrooms users is not whether VR is dead, but whether their work genuinely benefits from immersion enough to justify the hardware, administration and vendor risk.
