Meta and Corning announced a multiyear agreement worth up to $6 billion for optical fiber, cable, and connectivity products used in Meta’s U.S. data centers. The deal also makes Meta the anchor customer for a major optical-cable expansion in Hickory, North Carolina. It shows that the companies see data-center connectivity as strategically important; the announcements do not establish that fiber is already a binding bottleneck across the AI industry.
What the Meta–Corning deal includes
Announced on January 27, 2026, the agreement calls for Corning to supply its latest optical fiber, cable, and connectivity solutions for Meta’s advanced U.S. data centers. Its stated value is up to $6 billion over multiple years. That is an announced ceiling, not a guaranteed minimum purchase or a disclosed annual buying schedule. Neither company published expected cable volumes or detailed product specifications in the announcement. Corning’s announcement and Meta’s announcement describe the agreement and its intended role.
Corning said Meta would serve as anchor customer for a significant optical-cable capacity expansion at Corning’s Hickory, North Carolina facility, alongside expanded manufacturing capabilities elsewhere in the state. Corning projected a 15 to 20 percent increase in its North Carolina employment as a result of the expansion; this is a company projection, not a report of hiring already completed. The company said it already had more than 5,000 employees in the state.
Why AI data centers use optical fiber
AI data centers rely on connections that move information among servers and other hardware. Meta describes fiber-optic cable as part of that connectivity, while Corning says its products are designed for the density and scale requirements of advanced AI data centers. Optical fiber is therefore part of the physical infrastructure needed to connect computing equipment, not a substitute for servers or the other systems that make a data center operate.

- Optical digital audio cable: Perfect for equipment with a TOSLINK interface (OPT In / OPT Out or S/PDIF In / S/PDIF Out). TOSLINK connector to TOSLINK connector (F05 connector)
- Versatile: Ideal for transmitting crystal-clear digital audio from your TV, video game console (PS3/PS4/Xbox One), DVD/Blu-ray player, or TV streaming box to a soundbar, amplifier/amp, stereo/Hi-Fi system, D/A converter, and more
- High-End: This metal-free fiber optic audio cable, featuring a fully flexible PVC jacket, is entirely immune to electrical interference. Each cable undergoes multi-stage testing during manufacturing to ensure maximum product quality and durability
- 24K gold-plated connectors: Corrosion resistant gold plating keeps connectors clean. And because these cables are fiber optic, they provide 100 % signal transmission with 0 % loss
- No risk: 36 months manufacturer warranty
Those descriptions explain why Meta is buying connectivity products, but the releases do not quantify how much fiber a facility needs, identify a specific technical shortfall, or show that fiber availability is holding back deployment. They also do not publish the deal’s delivery schedule or the expansion’s expected production capacity.
What the Hickory construction milestones establish
On March 31, 2026, Corning and Meta marked the start of construction on the Hickory expansion. Meta’s April 14 update said construction was underway and described the site as producing optical cable for its AI infrastructure. These updates confirm project activity, not a production start, completed expansion, or full-capacity output.

- Please REMOVE the end protective caps before using the cable.
- IN THE BOX: 6-foot digital optical audio Toslink cable.
- CLEAR AUDIO: Multi-channel, fiber-optic digital audio output; corrosion resistant gold-plated connectors and buffer tubing for optimal signal transfer.
- DURABLE: Lightweight, flexible cable with a rugged PVC exterior and removable rubber tips that protect the cable when not plugged in; remove before using.
- CONNECTS DEVICES: Quickly connects a sound bar, CD player, Blu-Ray player, game console, or other device to an audio system or TV.
Meta said it had 26 U.S. data centers operational or under construction in January 2026. That is the company’s count at the time of its announcement, not a current tally. The March construction update and Meta’s April update describe the project milestones.

No. A major supply agreement and factory expansion are evidence that Meta considers optical connectivity important to its infrastructure plans. They do not, by themselves, demonstrate an industrywide shortage or prove that fiber is currently constraining AI data-center construction.

- 【Precision Design】The precisely designed cuboid connectors of this digital optical audio cable make installation easy and secure. The flexible and lightweight nylon material ensures hassle-free handling. Additionally, removable rubber caps protect the connectors from dust and oxidation when not in use. CL3-rated, this cable is also designed for in-wall installation, providing flexibility for your setup
The announcements leave key questions unanswered: they provide no independent supply-market data, no cable volumes, no guaranteed order minimum, and no timeline for deliveries or the production ramp. Meta’s description of connectivity as central to its work and Corning’s account of products designed for AI data-center scale are corporate statements, not independent measurements of supply constraints. The more defensible takeaway is that fiber capacity is receiving strategic investment; whether it becomes a binding bottleneck would require separate evidence about demand, available supply, and project delays.
