Pineau announced on April 1, 2025, that she would leave Meta on May 30. She has since joined Cohere as head of research. This was not the later departure story about Meta chief AI scientist Yann LeCun.
Who was Meta’s AI research chief?
Pineau joined Meta in May 2017 and became the leader of FAIR in 2023. She is also a computer-science professor at McGill University in Montreal. “Head of AI research” was shorthand for her role; her formal Meta title was vice president of AI research. Reuters’ account of the announcement describes her tenure and leadership role.
What did Pineau announce, and why was she leaving?
In a public post on April 1, Pineau said her final day would be May 30, 2025, after nearly eight years at Meta. She described making room for others to pursue the work and said she planned to take time before a “new adventure.” Her statement did not name a next employer or give a specific reason such as a dispute, dismissal, or disagreement over Meta’s AI strategy. Pineau’s announcement is the primary source for what she said.
What FAIR did—and how it fit into Meta
FAIR, short for Fundamental AI Research and formerly known as Facebook AI Research, focused on long-term AI research. Pineau’s departure post associated the group’s work with projects and tools including PyTorch, FAISS, RoBERTa, DINO, Llama, Segment Anything, CodeGen, and Audiobox.

FAIR was one part of Meta’s AI work, not the entirety of the company’s AI operation. Research reporting said Meta reorganized parts of its AI structure in 2024, including placing FAIR under Chief Product Officer Chris Cox’s organization. That timing provides organizational context, but does not establish that the reorganization caused Pineau to leave. The Information’s reporting on the organization and successor search covers that context.
Why the departure drew attention
Pineau’s exit left a leadership vacancy in a research group associated with prominent Meta AI projects. It came as major technology companies competed for AI talent and sought to turn research into products. Meta’s planned spending on AI infrastructure was reported at approximately $65 billion for 2025; that was a dated spending plan, not a standing annual budget. The departure also raised a broader strategic question: how Meta would balance foundational research and openly released work with faster product development. The announcement alone did not show that Meta was abandoning open research, changing Llama’s direction, or shutting down FAIR.
Did Meta have a replacement?
At the time of Pineau’s announcement, Meta said it had no immediate replacement and had begun searching for one. The announcement did not identify a successor or establish that FAIR would close.

What happened to Pineau and Yann LeCun?
Later reporting said Pineau joined Canadian AI company Cohere as head of research in August 2025. That move was not part of her April announcement. Le Monde’s later interview identifies her Cohere role.
Yann LeCun is a separate figure. He co-founded FAIR and stepped down as its director in 2018, while remaining Meta’s chief AI scientist. In November 2025, he separately announced plans to leave Meta at year-end to launch a startup focused on Advanced Machine Intelligence. That later news should not be confused with Pineau’s April departure announcement. Reuters’ report on LeCun’s plans covers that distinct story.
