The company did not disclose how many employees were affected or how many remained.
What Mercedes-Benz confirmed about the cuts
In a statement to GeekWire, an unnamed Mercedes-Benz representative said: “In the normal course of business, Mercedes-Benz Research and Development North America (MBRDNA) made the difficult decision to reduce a limited number of roles in our Seattle office.” The statement described the reductions as “necessary for the continued success of our company.” GeekWire’s October 16, 2024 report did not provide an exact count, and the company did not identify a named executive as the source of the statement.
The reported figure of 81 employees is not a layoff count. GeekWire said the office website listed 81 employees when its report was published; that listing does not establish the number of people who lost roles or the office’s post-cut staffing.
What the Seattle R&D office worked on
Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America announced the Seattle hub in November 2017, with a focus on cloud computing to expand and enhance connected-car features. The company said it planned to grow the office to as many as 150 people. The company’s 2017 announcement described the planned size; GeekWire also reported the hub’s original plan to employ up to 150 software engineers.

The Seattle team was part of the automaker’s broader vehicle-software and digital-services work. In a June 2021 announcement, Mercedes-Benz described global R&D technology hubs, including Seattle, and its aim to connect the future MB.OS operating system with vehicles, cloud services and the Internet of Things. That strategic context does not establish a reason for the 2024 job cuts.
What remains unclear about the Seattle office
- Exact number of roles eliminated: not disclosed by Mercedes-Benz.
- Remaining Seattle headcount: not established by the 81-person website listing reported in October 2024.
- Whether the office later closed: not established. Mercedes-Benz Group’s North American R&D locations page, last updated in June 2026, lists five locations but not Seattle. Its omission alone does not prove the Seattle office closed.
Washington’s Employment Security Department provides a database for WARN notices, which can include an employer, location, effective date and number of affected workers. The available database-page information does not confirm whether a Mercedes-Benz notice related to these Seattle cuts exists, so it cannot be used to establish the number of affected employees.
