These steps improve the quality of your local presence, but they cannot guarantee a particular position: Google says local results mainly depend on relevance, distance, and prominence.
What MEO means for local search
Here, MEO means optimizing a business’s visibility in local search and map results. The term is not used uniformly in every market, so this guide focuses on Google Business Profile—the practical starting point for appearing in Google Search and Maps. Google’s advice applies to its own services, not automatically to other search platforms.

Google describes three main local ranking factors: relevance, or how well a profile matches what someone searches for; distance, or how far the business is from the searcher; and prominence, or how well known the business is. Google says prominence can include information such as links and reviews, but it does not publish a complete ranking formula. Google’s local-ranking guidance is a framework, not a recipe for a guaranteed spot.

Claim and verify your Google Business Profile
Start by establishing that you are authorized to represent the real business. Google says verification confirms that authorization and makes the profile more likely to show in search results. A verified owner can provide or edit details such as the address, contact information, business type, and photos. Use the official Google Business Profile guidance to find the available verification and profile-management options for your business.

Make the profile accurate and complete
Review the public listing as a customer would. Google says complete, accurate information makes a business more likely to appear for relevant local searches. Enter details that reflect the actual business, rather than adding keywords or claims that do not belong in its real-world name or offering.
- Business name and contact details: Check that the public name and ways to reach you are correct.
- Address: Provide an address when customers visit the business. Ensure it reflects where service is actually available.
- Hours: Keep regular hours current and update special hours when they change.
- Business type: Choose the category that accurately describes what the business does.
- Attributes: Add relevant, truthful details—for example, whether the location has parking or Wi-Fi.
Some profile features are restricted by eligibility or region. For example, Google notes that in-store product display is available only to eligible retailers in supported regions; do not assume every feature will appear for every business.

Use reviews to support customer decisions
Reviews are both customer feedback and a way for prospective customers to understand the business. Google says review count and ratings can contribute to prominence, and that positive reviews and helpful replies can help a business stand out. That guidance does not establish a target number of reviews, a required rating, or a guaranteed ranking benefit.
Recommended Free Tools
- Invite genuine customers to leave feedback through compliant, even-handed means.
- Monitor new reviews and respond constructively, including when a review raises a concern.
- Do not treat a particular review count or a perfect average as a promise of a higher position.
Add current, accurate photos and videos
Google recommends photos and videos to show what a business offers and tell its story. Choose current images that help someone understand the location, services, products, or experience. Keep the imagery representative: a photo should clarify what customers can expect, not create a misleading impression.
Rank #3
Connect the profile to an official website
A business website gives customers another place to confirm what the business does and how to contact it. Google Search Central recommends verifying site ownership in Search Console, which helps owners monitor how Google displays the site. Its guidance also describes structured data as a way to provide explicit clues about page meaning.
Use structured data only when it accurately describes content visitors can see. Google identifies Organization data as an option for indicating a preferred site logo and Breadcrumb data for describing a site’s hierarchy. See Google Search Central’s guidance on establishing business details for the supported details and implementation context.
Rank #4
Set expectations and assess what to improve
Use Google’s three factors to think through broad visibility issues: Does the profile match the service someone is seeking? Is the searcher near the business? Is the business known beyond its listing, including through signals such as links and reviews? These questions can help identify gaps in the profile and online presence, but they cannot reveal the exact reason for any one ranking.
Distance is especially difficult for an owner to control. Google describes it in relation to the searcher’s location and may use what it knows about that person’s location when a search does not specify one. A business therefore may appear differently to people searching from different places. Google also says its ranking details are confidential and that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Advertising should not be presented as a purchase of organic placement.
