Mentee Stipends: How Much You May Receive and What to Check

Mentee stipends vary by program and may be conditional, location-adjusted, or limited to specific expenses. Learn what to verify before relying on a payment.

There is no standard mentee stipend: some mentorship opportunities do not pay, and programs that do may set different amounts, purposes, eligibility rules, and payment conditions. For example, Linux Foundation LFX Mentorship uses a location-adjusted amount, while other programs offer research support, student awards, or event-specific travel funds. Check the terms for your exact program and cohort before budgeting around a payment.

Are mentee stipends guaranteed?

No. Linux Foundation service terms state, “Unless otherwise specified, Mentorship Opportunities do not include a stipend.” That is the rule for those opportunities, not a universal rule for every mentorship program. Treat a stipend as available only when the specific program or cohort explicitly says so.

There is no methodologically comparable figure for the average stipend or the share of mentorship programs that pay one. The examples below illustrate how program terms differ; they are not an industry-wide rate or representative survey.

How much do specific programs pay?

These examples show why the amount alone can be misleading: the recipient, purpose, location, schedule, and eligibility conditions differ.

Program and cohort Published amount What the amount covers and conditions
Linux Foundation LFX Mentorship $6,000 base, adjusted by country purchasing power; stated minimum $3,000 and maximum $6,600 The figures are the program’s stated location-based method, not a general stipend benchmark. Payments are staged against evaluations and satisfactory progress; the final installment follows successful completion.
UC Berkeley Institute for Research on Labor and Employment, Social Sciences Research Pathways, 2026–27 $2,000 for undergraduate mentees, paid in two $1,000 semester installments; $1,000 for graduate mentors The mentee and mentor awards are separate. These figures apply to the named program and cohort.
Infectious Diseases Society of America, iDMentorship365 / IDWeek 2026 $750 travel stipend For eligible mentees attending both named IDWeek events and completing the post-event process. A mentee with an IDWeek Abstract Travel Award is ineligible.
California Student Teacher Stipend Program $10,000 to the student teacher California Commission on Teacher Credentialing webinar guidance dated April 9, 2026 says the full award must go to the student teacher; it may not be used to pay mentor teachers.

NIH’s FY 2026 NRSA notice sets stipend levels for its named fellowship and institutional training awards. Those levels apply within the NRSA framework, not to mentorship programs generally; consult the notice’s tables if your award is an NRSA award.

Why can two stipend amounts mean different things?

A program may call support a stipend even when it serves a specific purpose or has restrictions. Before comparing figures or treating one as income available for ordinary expenses, identify what the award is meant to cover.

  • Participation or program support: Check whether payment depends on staying enrolled, meeting milestones, or completing the program.
  • Research support: Confirm whether the award goes to the mentee, a mentor, or both, and whether it is tied to a particular cohort or academic period.
  • Travel support: Determine whether the money is a fixed award or reimbursement, which events and expenses qualify, and whether receipts or attendance are required.
  • Student-teacher award: Verify who must receive the funds and whether local payroll or agency procedures govern payment.

How do you confirm your amount and eligibility?

  1. Find the official terms for your exact program and cohort. Use the program’s current award page, FAQ, and terms rather than relying on a general description of “mentee stipends.”
  2. Confirm that payment is explicitly offered. Check whether the program promises a stipend, describes it as conditional, or says opportunities generally do not include one unless specified.
  3. Check how the amount is determined. Look for location or country adjustments, a range, currency, or a cohort-specific amount.
  4. Identify the payment purpose and recipient. Establish whether it is participation support, research funding, living support, travel reimbursement, or another type of award—and whether it is paid to you or someone else.
  5. Read the payment schedule and progress requirements. Check which evaluations, deliverables, attendance, surveys, or successful-completion conditions trigger installments or reimbursement.
  6. Review exclusions and payment-processing requirements. Confirm any award conflicts, required documents, deadlines, or expense-report steps before counting on the funds.
  7. Ask the program administrator about unclear terms. Request written confirmation of the amount, timing, conditions, and recipient if the published page does not answer those questions.

How are mentee stipends taxed?

The word “stipend” does not by itself determine tax treatment. The IRS guidance on scholarships and fellowships says that, for degree candidates, amounts used for qualified tuition and related expenses may be tax-free under defined conditions. Amounts used for incidental expenses or paid for required services are generally taxable, subject to specific exceptions. Those rules do not automatically classify every mentorship award.

NIH policy describes NRSA stipends as subsistence support rather than salary or payment for expected employee services. That treatment belongs to the named NRSA context, not to every research or mentorship payment. Linux Foundation terms place responsibility for taxes on recipients of its stipends. Ask the award issuer how it reports your payment and consult the applicable tax authority or a qualified tax professional about your circumstances.
