The steepest figures refer to particular memory products and comparison periods: TrendForce forecast quarterly jumps approaching 90% for mobile DRAM early in the year, while Omdia later reported increases of up to 200% year over year in selected smartphone-memory categories. For buyers, the likelier risk is uneven: higher prices or weaker deals, especially on budget phones, alongside models with less RAM or storage for the same money.
What does “memory” mean in these price reports?
Phone headlines often blur together several components that serve different purposes and do not share one price trend:
- Mobile DRAM—usually LPDDR4X, LPDDR5, or LPDDR5X—is the phone’s working memory for active apps, multitasking, and on-device processing. LPDDR6 is emerging.
- NAND flash stores a phone’s photos, apps, and files. Its capacity is commonly sold as 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB.
- UFS is a storage interface and package used in many Android phones; it is not another name for RAM.
- HBM and server DRAM are used in AI accelerators and data centers. They are not interchangeable with phone memory, but their demand competes for suppliers’ investment, production capacity, and attention.
A price change in server DRAM is not a direct forecast of a phone’s RAM cost. Even mobile DRAM and NAND can move differently, and contract prices paid by manufacturers do not equal retail prices paid by consumers.
What the 2026 price figures actually say
The comparison period matters as much as the percentage. A quarter-over-quarter forecast, a year-over-year observation, and a projection from an earlier market low are not interchangeable. These are industry estimates for components, not announced changes to phone retail prices.

| Product or measure | Reported change | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| LPDDR4X mobile DRAM | At least 70–75% higher | TrendForce’s Q2 2026 quarter-over-quarter forecast: TrendForce. |
| LPDDR5X mobile DRAM | 78–83% higher | TrendForce’s Q2 2026 quarter-over-quarter forecast: TrendForce. |
| LPDDR4X and LPDDR5X | Around 90% higher | TrendForce’s Q1 2026 quarter-over-quarter forecast, published in February—not a year-end comparison: TrendForce. |
| Mobile DRAM and NAND | Around 90% higher in Q1; another 30% expected in Q2 | Omdia’s April 2026 market update. The Q2 figure was an expectation at publication: Omdia. |
| Selected smartphone-memory categories | Up to 200% year over year | Omdia’s July 2026 analysis describes increases in some categories; “up to” does not describe every phone-memory product: Omdia. |
| HBM and server memory | No comparable phone-memory percentage established here | Suppliers describe strong AI and data-center demand and tight capacity, but those products are distinct from mobile LPDDR and phone NAND: Samsung; SK hynix. |
So “could double by 2026” is shorthand, not a complete price claim. It needs a product, a starting point, and a comparison period. The most dramatic year-over-year figure from Omdia is for selected categories; TrendForce’s mobile-DRAM figures are quarterly forecasts.
Why AI demand can raise the cost of phone memory
AI data centers need large quantities of high-bandwidth memory (HBM), server DRAM, and enterprise solid-state storage. These products can offer suppliers more attractive returns than some mobile-memory products. When capacity is constrained, manufacturers have incentives to direct investment and production toward high-value products, tightening supply available to phone makers.
Samsung said its Memory Business was prioritizing server DRAM, eSSDs, and HBM amid continued capacity constraints, and reported that industry-wide price increases benefited its second-quarter 2026 results. Samsung’s results also described robust AI-related demand. SK hynix said customer demand exceeded available capacity and favorable pricing conditions were expected to continue for DRAM and NAND. SK hynix’s Q1 results provide the supplier’s account of those conditions.
Micron likewise described demand shifting toward higher-performance, higher-value products and said calendar-2026 data-center DRAM and NAND bit shipments were expected to more than double from two years earlier. Its comments concern industry data-center shipments, not smartphone memory prices: Micron’s prepared remarks. New generations can also carry higher costs per bit during transitions; a faster or newer product does not necessarily mean cheaper capacity for phone makers.
This is best understood as a memory-allocation squeeze, not AI companies literally buying the same finished phone-memory modules. Scarce wafer, packaging, and advanced-process capacity is being directed toward products suppliers prioritize, while phone manufacturers compete for mobile DRAM and storage supply.
Why a component increase does not translate directly into a phone-price increase
A phone’s memory is one part of its bill of materials (BOM), the cost of its components. The effect of a higher memory quote depends on the phone’s RAM and storage capacities, memory generation, supplier contracts, and the manufacturer’s margins and pricing strategy. A high-storage configuration may face a different cost impact from a base model.
If a manufacturer’s memory bill rises by a given amount, it could pass that increase through to buyers, absorb it in its margin, reduce a promotion, or change the configuration. These outcomes can combine. That is why component inflation, BOM inflation, wholesale price changes, and the price a shopper effectively pays after discounts are separate measures.
Omdia reported that memory had become a significantly larger share of smartphone BOM costs and that manufacturers had already begun raising retail prices in some markets. Its March 2026 forecast put global smartphone shipments down about 7% year over year, while its later outlook cited in the July analysis projected a 12% decline. Those forecasts changed as costs worsened; neither should be treated as a settled market consensus. Omdia’s March forecast and July analysis show the shift.
Which phones and buyers are most exposed?
Budget phones: the thinnest buffer
Phones below $400 are especially vulnerable because their margins are thinner, their buyers are more price-sensitive, and manufacturers have less room to absorb higher component costs. Omdia forecast that this segment would decline by more than 22% in 2026 and reported that memory’s share of BOM costs in sub-$400 phones nearly doubled between Q3 2025 and Q1 2026. That is a forecast for the segment’s shipment volume, not a prediction that every budget phone will disappear or rise in price. Omdia’s segment analysis.

Actual speeds may vary depending on the device used, interface, conditions of use, and other factors. Check whether your device is compatible with the microSD capacity; for example, if the device only supports a maximum capacity of 64GB, it may not recognize this Micro SD Cards’ full capacity of 128GB.
Midrange phones: more pressure on configurations and deals
Manufacturers may preserve a familiar starting price while reducing the base RAM or storage, trimming the number of configurations, or offering fewer discounts. Moving from 128GB to 256GB may also become a more prominent upsell. These are possible responses to cost pressure, not announced changes across the whole market.
Premium phones: more room to absorb costs, not immunity
Premium brands can have more scope to raise prices, absorb costs temporarily, or sell higher-margin configurations. Omdia nevertheless reported that memory costs rose by more than 100% as a share of BOM in products priced above $400, as well as in the budget segment. Its Q1 2026 capacity estimates also show why averages can conceal a split: smartphones averaged 8.3GB of DRAM and 279GB of NAND, with average capacity up 5.5% and 10.1% year over year, respectively. Omdia attributed overall growth to higher-end devices while lower- and midrange phones faced capacity cuts. Omdia’s July analysis.
Phones with unusually high RAM or storage capacities can face a different cost exposure from base models. The practical issue is therefore not only whether a brand raises its headline price, but whether the configuration available at that price changes.
What phone makers may change instead of raising sticker prices
There is no single response. Manufacturers can mix several measures, and the choice may differ by market, model, and supply contract:
- Raise the retail or wholesale price.
- Reduce discounts, trade-in incentives, or launch promotions, increasing the effective price without changing the list price.
- Keep the sticker price but offer less physical RAM or internal storage in the base configuration.
- Use older memory standards in lower-cost models, where performance and availability allow.
- Limit production, delay a launch, or give priority to premium models with better margins.
- Accept lower margins for a time, or drop especially low-margin configurations or markets.
- Use software optimization to make constrained memory more workable; virtual RAM features do not provide the same performance as additional physical LPDDR.
TrendForce warned in February that high memory costs could put smartphone production at risk, with price-sensitive brands potentially making significant production cuts. That is a risk assessment, not proof that a particular model will be cancelled: TrendForce.
How buyers should decide whether to buy now
There is no universal reason to rush into a purchase: forecasts describe a pressured market, not a guaranteed price increase on every phone. Match the decision to your current device and the deal in front of you.
- Buy now if your current phone is failing, you rely on it for work, or the model you want has a genuinely strong offer.
- Consider buying sooner if you have found an unusually good RAM-and-storage configuration for its price or a promotion that materially improves the total cost.
- Wait if your current phone is recent and the upgrade is mainly for incremental performance. A forecast is not a reason by itself to replace a working device.
- Compare effective cost, including the outright price, trade-in value, carrier subsidy, and promotion—not just the monthly installment or list price.
- Choose storage for how you use the phone. If there is no microSD slot and you record substantial video, compare the real cost of the higher internal-storage tier before buying.
- Do not pay extra for a RAM number alone. Consider chipset performance, thermal behavior, software support, and update policy; advertised virtual memory is not equivalent to physical RAM.
How long could the pressure last?
Supplier statements and market forecasts support continued pressure through at least the rest of 2026, but they do not establish a permanent shortage. Samsung expected robust server and AI demand in the second half of the year and said constraints would continue, even as mobile and PC demand moderated. SK hynix also described limited supply and expected demand growth to tighten conditions in the second half. SK hynix’s analyst interview.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThere are countervailing forces. TrendForce’s later outlook, as reported by Tom’s Hardware, suggested that price growth could moderate in the second half as buyers hit affordability limits, even while DRAM and NAND prices continued rising through Q3. Tom’s Hardware’s account of the outlook.
New production capacity and manufacturing transitions can eventually help, but near-term additions may be aimed at advanced, higher-value products rather than restoring inexpensive mobile memory immediately. Suppliers’ product roadmaps underline that transition: SK hynix announced LPDDR6 with 33% higher speed and 20% improved power efficiency versus LPDDR5X, while Micron said LPDDR5X was ramping at a leading smartphone OEM. These product announcements do not establish when lower-cost phone memory will become plentiful. SK hynix; Micron.
Quick Recap
What to watch on a phone listing
- Whether the listed RAM is physical memory or a combined figure that includes virtual expansion.
- Whether the advertised price is for the same storage tier as last year’s model.
- Whether the model is actually available in your region and whether the offer depends on a trade-in or carrier plan.
- Whether the phone supports expandable storage before relying on a lower internal capacity.
- Whether discount changes, rather than the list price, are raising the amount you would pay.
