A video reported by PerthNow on 3 June 2025 shows a heated dispute at a Melbourne Woolworths after an employee intervened over fruit an adult customer believed was free. Woolworths describes its Free Fruit for Kids program as a piece of fruit for children to enjoy while shopping—not a general free-fruit offer for adult shoppers.
What happened at the Melbourne Woolworths
PerthNow reported that the customer filmed an argument after an employee stopped her from leaving the store with bananas and apples she considered free. According to the report, the employee said the offer was for children to take one piece of fruit and eat while shopping. The employee also said the shopper had multiple pieces in a bag; the shopper disputed that the disagreement was simply about one banana. These are accounts reported by PerthNow, not independently established findings. PerthNow’s 3 June 2025 report
The shopper alleged that the employee told her to “go back to her home country.” The employee denied making that remark, according to PerthNow. The report says security intervened and the shopper later said she left with fruit. The cited material does not establish an independent finding about either person’s account or a formal police outcome.
What Woolworths says the free-fruit program is for
Woolworths Group’s current program page says: “Children can enjoy a free piece of fresh fruit at any Woolworths Supermarket or Metro store across Australian and New Zealand.” That is the retailer’s published description of the initiative. It identifies children as the intended recipients and describes the fruit as something to enjoy, but it is not a detailed rulebook addressing every store-level situation. The scale of the program is also company-reported. Woolworths Group said in 2023 that more than 160 million pieces of fruit had been given away since 2015. In an earlier release dated 21 April 2021, it said the total had passed 100 million pieces given to Australian kids since launch; that earlier figure is a dated cumulative milestone, not a competing current total. What the video and reporting do—and do not—establish
The PerthNow account describes a confrontation and relays opposing claims from the customer and employee. It does not independently resolve how much fruit the customer had, exactly what was said during the exchange, or whether any store policy was applied correctly. The shopper’s reported line, “All I wanted was this free f***ing banana that you give out to kids,” is transcribed in PerthNow’s story and should be understood as the report’s rendering of what was said.
