The Walton family’s fortune began with Sam and Helen Walton’s retail business in Arkansas and grew alongside Walmart, which Sam founded in 1962. The family’s wealth is often described in rankings, but there is no single authoritative total for everyone who might be counted as a Walton: estimates depend on the date, the relatives and assets included, and how trusts are treated. The family also supports philanthropy through the Walton Family Foundation, a separate organization from the Walmart Foundation.
Who are the Walton family?
The Waltons are the family of Sam Walton, the retailer who founded Walmart, and his wife Helen, along with their descendants and spouses. Their story is closely tied to Bentonville, Arkansas, where the family business began before expanding into one of the world’s largest retailers.

Sam and Helen moved to Bentonville in 1950. Sam opened Walton’s 5&10 on the downtown square, a variety store that preceded Walmart. On July 2, 1962, he opened the first Walmart store in nearby Rogers, Arkansas. Walmart’s corporate history and its biography of Sam Walton document those milestones.
How did the Waltons make their money?
The family’s wealth is primarily associated with Walmart ownership. Sam Walton built the retail company, and the Walton family retained a substantial stake as the business grew. Walmart’s official timeline says the family owned 24 stores and recorded $12.7 million in sales in 1967. Those are historical company figures, not a measure of present-day family wealth.
#1 Best Overall
Walmart became publicly traded in 1970. That distinction matters: Walmart is a publicly traded company, while estimates of wealth attributed to Waltons concern individuals, family branches and, depending on the estimate, trusts and other assets. The company’s market value is not itself the family’s net worth.
Sam Walton died in 1992. Shortly before his death, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In remarks reproduced in Walmart’s biography, he said: “If we work together, we’ll lower the cost of living for everyone…we’ll give the world an opportunity to see what it’s like to save and have a better life.” Walmart’s Sam Walton biography is the source for the quotation.

How much are the Waltons worth?
There is no settled, comprehensive net-worth figure for every person who could be included in “the Walton family.” Wealth rankings are estimates, not family financial statements, and can change with Walmart’s share price. They can also differ over which relatives, trusts and assets beyond Walmart stock are counted.
Forbes’ Rob Walton profile, last updated September 15, 2026, gives a real-time estimate for Rob Walton and family and says Sam Walton’s heirs collectively own about 45% of Walmart stock. Treat that as a dated Forbes estimate with a specific profile scope—not an official disclosure or a complete accounting of every Walton.

A separate Forbes July 4, 2026 report on family wealth illustrates how charitable trusts and other attribution choices affect family-wide calculations. Estimates should not be added together unless their coverage and treatment of shared assets are clear.
What does the Walton Family Foundation do?
Sam and Helen Walton established the Walton Family Foundation in 1987. The foundation describes itself as family-led, with several generations of descendants and spouses in leadership and a board composed entirely of family members. Its stated mission is to create access to opportunity by addressing social and environmental problems.
Rank #4
The foundation identifies three areas of work:
- Education and lifelong opportunity.
- Rivers and oceans and the communities they support.
- Northwest Arkansas and the Arkansas-Mississippi Delta, the family’s home region.
The Walton Family Foundation reports awarding $548.8 million in grants in 2024. That is the foundation’s reported grant figure for that year; it is not a claim about a particular Walton’s personal donations. See the foundation’s description of its work.
Is the Walton Family Foundation the same as the Walmart Foundation?
No. The Walton Family Foundation says it operates independently from Walmart and the Walmart Foundation, with separate funding sources and governance. Their work and giving should not be combined or attributed to one another. The family foundation also says it does not accept unsolicited grant proposals. Its FAQ explains the distinction.
