The Odisha MLA at the center of the 1,700% figure was Sanatan Mahakud, an Independent representing Champua in Keonjhar district. In a report published on November 6, 2015, Scroll.in said his election-affidavit assets rose from Rs 3 crore in 2009 to Rs 51 crore in 2014. The figures and percentage are Scroll’s account of the affidavits, not a current wealth estimate or an independent audit.

Who was the MLA named in the report?

Scroll.in identified Sanatan Mahakud as an Independent MLA for Champua, in Odisha’s Keonjhar district. Its November 6, 2015 profile examined his political rise and business activity in a region associated with iron-ore mining. This is a historical account; it does not establish whether Mahakud holds office today.

What does the 1,700% figure refer to?

Scroll reported that Mahakud’s declared assets were Rs 3 crore in his 2009 election affidavit and Rs 51 crore in his 2014 affidavit. It characterized the change over those five years as a 1,700% increase. The report’s figures can be viewed side by side:

Affidavit year Asset total reported by Scroll Source status
2009 Rs 3 crore Scroll said the figure came from Mahakud’s election affidavit; the original declaration was not independently reviewed for this account.
2014 Rs 51 crore Scroll said the figure came from Mahakud’s election affidavit; the original declaration was not independently reviewed for this account.

The percentage is Scroll’s characterization of the comparison. The underlying affidavit schedules, asset categories, valuation details, and calculation method are not established here, so the totals should not be treated as independently checked or as a measure of present-day wealth.

How did the report connect the figures to Keonjhar?

The profile situated Mahakud’s rise in Keonjhar’s iron-ore economy and discussed his emergence as both a local political figure and an ore-transport entrepreneur. That is context for the story, not proof that mining activity caused the reported increase in declared assets. The asset comparison alone does not establish wrongdoing or explain how the totals changed.

What did the report say about the allegations?

Scroll discussed allegations concerning links between Mahakud and contractor B Prabhakaran. Prabhakaran denied the alleged partnership and told Scroll, “He [Mahakud] is not my transport contractor.” He also said, “In the last five years, I have never taken on any new work where Sanatan Mahakud operates.” Scroll reported that it tried several ways to contact Mahakud but received no response. Those statements record a denial and a reported non-response; they do not resolve the allegations or establish guilt.
