Shel Kaphan was Amazon’s first employee, hired by Jeff Bezos in 1994. He helped build the early company and website, when the business was focused on books; he later served as Amazon’s chief technology officer and left in 1999. Kaphan’s account also makes clear that the company’s eventual reach was far beyond what he imagined at the start.

Who was Shel Kaphan?

Kaphan was an experienced programmer who joined Bezos’s young company in 1994. PBS identifies him as Amazon employee No. 1 and says he later became chief technology officer. In a 2011 interview with GeekWire, Kaphan recalled coming from Santa Cruz, where he had worked at Kaleida Labs, and being drawn to the emerging web and the prospect of building a startup.

“The concept for Amazon came to me in 1994,” Bezos said in a statement to the U.S. House Committee on the Judiciary. That dates Bezos’s concept; it does not make Kaphan Amazon’s sole founder. Amazon identifies Bezos as its founder, while Kaphan’s distinction is that he was its first employee and a senior technical leader. Amazon’s investor-relations biography of Bezos likewise says he founded Amazon.com in 1994.

What was Amazon building in the early days?

Kaphan’s recollection is notably narrower than the company Amazon became. In his 2020 interview with James Jacoby for PBS FRONTLINE, he said the early conversations centered on books. Video and audio came later, followed by international expansion and other ways of selling.

That sequence matters: the later Amazon was not the starting blueprint. The interview describes a company whose product scope, geographic reach and selling formats expanded over time. It does not establish that Kaphan alone originated or built every later category or feature.

When did Amazon launch, and how long did Kaphan stay?

Milestone Date What the source establishes
Bezos hired Kaphan 1994 PBS identifies Kaphan as Amazon’s first employee.
Amazon went live July 1995 PBS’s documentary page gives this public launch date.
Kaphan left Amazon 1999 PBS’s 2020 interview introduction gives this departure year.

The milestones show that Kaphan’s time at the company covered its formation and early growth, not the many later years of its expansion. PBS says he held the CTO role later in his tenure; it does not specify in the cited account when he assumed it.

How much of Amazon’s later scale did Kaphan foresee?

In the PBS interview, Kaphan was direct about the distance between the books-focused beginning and the company that followed: “Well, I don’t think anybody, probably including Jeff, really had the full scope of the opportunity in mind at that point.” He added, “What the company is now was nowhere in my wildest imagination. Nowhere.” These are his reflections on what he and others could foresee, not a claim that Amazon’s later scale was inevitable.

What concerns has he raised about Amazon’s influence?

Kaphan has also expressed concern about the position of smaller companies alongside a large and powerful platform. In the PBS interview, he said: “The main thing I am concerned about is just preserving the ability for small companies to innovate and to do so without fear of having their business taken away.” That is Kaphan’s view of the competitive challenge; it should not be read as a measured finding about the effect of Amazon on every small business.
