That difference affects who owns inventory, how each platform records revenue, what sellers pay for, how orders are fulfilled, and which shoppers each business is trying to serve.
The comparison is directional rather than a ranking. Amazon’s disclosures are global, Meesho’s filings describe its own reporting segments, and the most direct three-way comparison for Flipkart comes from a January 8, 2026 JM Financial analysis rather than a fully detailed Flipkart filing.

The short answer: three different versions of marketplace commerce
All three companies help third-party sellers reach shoppers, but they do not use the same economic model.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Meesho: A marketplace-led model built around third-party sellers, value-conscious shoppers and a wide range of lower-ticket or unbranded products. Its reported Marketplace segment earns money from services around transactions, including fulfillment, advertising and seller insights. Meesho says reported revenue is not the total value of merchandise sold on the platform.
- Amazon: A hybrid of first-party retail and third-party marketplace services. Amazon buys or owns some inventory and records those sales as product revenue. It also hosts independent sellers and generally records only its net share of their sales as service revenue.
- Flipkart: The JM Financial report characterizes Flipkart as a more commission-led marketplace, with seller, logistics or fulfillment, and advertising fees. The report places it closer to branded supply and convenience than Meesho, although detailed first-party Flipkart information was not available for every point.
Consequently, a platform’s reported revenue cannot be read as a simple measure of the merchandise flowing through it. A company that records only commissions and services can process a large volume of goods while reporting less revenue than a retailer that records the full selling price of inventory it owns.

What Meesho’s business model does
A marketplace rather than a conventional retailer
Meesho’s company reporting separates a Marketplace segment from New Initiatives. The Marketplace segment connects shoppers with third-party sellers and coordinates services needed to complete those orders. In the model described in its filings, Meesho is not generally buying merchandise for resale in the way a first-party retailer does.
The distinction matters for accounting. If a seller lists a product for ₹500 and sells it through the platform, the ₹500 is the value of the transaction between seller and shopper. Meesho’s own revenue is the amount it earns for services associated with that transaction, not automatically the full ₹500. Meesho explicitly cautions that its reported revenue is not the same as the gross merchandise value, or GMV, traded on the platform.
How Meesho earns money
Meesho’s filings identify services such as order fulfillment, advertising and seller insights as sources of Marketplace revenue. The JM Financial comparison also describes zero commission as a central part of Meesho’s positioning. That should not be interpreted as “no cost to sell”: a seller may still pay for logistics, fulfillment, advertising or other services, and the exact commercial terms can vary by service and policy.

It can expand selection by onboarding sellers instead of purchasing every item itself, while monetizing the tools and infrastructure sellers use to reach customers and complete orders.
Who Meesho is trying to serve
The JM Financial report places Meesho toward value commerce: lower-ticket purchases, price-sensitive shoppers and long-tail or unbranded supply. Those are broad tendencies, not rules for every category. Branded goods can appear on a value-focused marketplace, and a shopper who normally buys premium products may still use Meesho for a particular low-price item.
What Amazon’s hybrid model does
First-party retail and third-party services in one company
Amazon operates both as a retailer and as a marketplace operator. It sells products from inventory it owns or controls, while also allowing independent sellers to list products.
Amazon’s 2025 Form 10-K states: “Generally, we recognize gross revenue from items we sell from our inventory as product sales and recognize our net share of revenue of items sold by third-party sellers as service sales.” This sentence captures the central accounting difference between Amazon’s two sides.

- When Amazon is the seller of record for its own inventory, it generally records the full selling price as product sales, with the cost of that inventory recorded separately.
- When an independent seller makes the sale, Amazon generally records its net share—such as a selling fee or related service charge—as service sales rather than recording the entire merchandise price.
Amazon’s service revenue is broader than commissions
Amazon identifies several service-revenue categories associated with its wider ecosystem. These include seller fees, fulfillment and shipping fees, advertising services and Prime subscriptions. A marketplace analysis that looks only at a commission rate therefore misses important parts of Amazon’s economics.
Amazon’s filing describes the company globally. Its categories should not be treated as India-specific revenue figures, nor should global Amazon totals be compared directly with Meesho’s India-focused reporting or with Flipkart figures from a different period or entity.
Why the hybrid model changes incentives
Amazon can use first-party purchasing to make selected products available directly, while its marketplace adds assortment without requiring Amazon to own every item. The trade-off is greater operational complexity: first-party inventory carries purchasing, storage and markdown risk, while third-party services create fee income without the same inventory ownership exposure.
What Flipkart’s model looks like in the available comparison
Commission-led marketplace positioning
The January 8, 2026 JM Financial report describes Flipkart as closer to a commission-led marketplace. It identifies seller fees, logistics or fulfillment fees, and advertising as important monetization channels. In that framing, Flipkart earns from enabling transactions and providing services around them, rather than relying primarily on sales of inventory it owns.
This is an analyst characterization, not a substitute for a complete current Flipkart filing. Flipkart’s corporate and seller pages did not provide enough extractable detail to verify every aspect of the comparison directly.
Branded supply and convenience
JM Financial places Flipkart closer to Amazon than to Meesho on two broad dimensions: branded assortment and convenience-oriented shopping. The distinction is relative. Flipkart also carries value products and long-tail selection, while Amazon and Meesho both serve many different customer segments.
Side-by-side comparison
| Dimension | Meesho | Amazon | Flipkart |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core structure | Marketplace segment connecting shoppers and third-party sellers; also reports New Initiatives. | Hybrid: first-party retail plus third-party marketplace. | Described by JM Financial as a commission-led marketplace. |
| Inventory ownership | Characterized by JM Financial as asset-light and not holding inventory as a core model. | Owns or controls inventory for first-party sales and hosts independent sellers. | JM Financial emphasizes marketplace intermediation; detailed first-party inventory disclosure was not stated. |
| Main revenue categories | Seller-facing marketplace services, including fulfillment, advertising and seller insights; the report also highlights zero commission positioning. | Gross product sales from Amazon inventory; service revenue from seller fees, fulfillment and shipping, advertising and Prime subscriptions. | Seller, logistics or fulfillment, and advertising fees, according to JM Financial. |
| Merchandise positioning | Value-conscious shoppers, lower-ticket purchases and long-tail or unbranded supply, as a broad tendency. | Broad selection spanning first-party and third-party offers; no single shopper segment should be inferred from the global filing. | More branded and convenience-oriented than Meesho, according to JM Financial. |
| Evidence base | Company filings and investor-relations reporting. | SEC-filed 2025 Form 10-K, describing global operations. | Primarily the January 8, 2026 JM Financial report for this comparison; first-party detail is thinner. |
How money flows through each platform
Step 1: A shopper places an order
The shopper pays for merchandise, and may also pay delivery or other charges. The transaction’s total value is not automatically the platform’s revenue. The platform’s accounting depends on whether it is the principal selling the goods or an agent providing services for an independent seller.

Step 2: Determine who is selling the product
- For Meesho’s marketplace model, the independent seller supplies the product and Meesho provides the marketplace and related services.
- For Amazon, the answer can be Amazon itself or a third-party seller, even when the customer experience appears similar.
- For Flipkart, the JM Financial comparison treats the platform primarily as an intermediary that charges seller and service fees.
Step 3: Add service monetization
Fulfillment, shipping, advertising and seller tools can generate revenue separately from any transaction commission. A platform may earn more by selling sponsored placement or logistics services even when its headline commission is low or zero.
Step 4: Account for costs and risk
First-party retail carries inventory costs and the risk that products remain unsold, become obsolete or require markdowns. A marketplace service model avoids most direct inventory ownership but must invest in seller acquisition, technology, payments, customer support, fraud controls and delivery coordination.
Inventory ownership is the key structural difference
Why first-party inventory matters
When a retailer owns inventory, it decides what to buy, how much to stock and when to discount. It can control availability and presentation more directly, but its capital is tied up in goods and it bears the downside if demand is weaker than expected.
Amazon’s first-party business therefore has a different risk profile from its third-party marketplace. Its own inventory sales are recorded gross, while marketplace transactions generally produce service revenue equal to Amazon’s share.
Why an asset-light marketplace scales differently
Meesho’s marketplace model lets sellers supply a wider range of products without Meesho purchasing each unit. That can support extensive, fragmented selection, especially where individual sellers have small inventories. The platform’s economic challenge shifts toward making seller services, logistics and advertising valuable enough to monetize consistently.

Fulfillment and logistics are part of the business model
Delivery is not merely a back-office function. It affects customer experience, seller economics and platform revenue.
- Meesho: Fulfillment and logistics are part of the marketplace economics described in company filings and the JM Financial report. The comparison discusses a seller-to-consumer shipping model.
- Amazon: Fulfillment and shipping fees are identified as service-revenue categories. Amazon can fulfill some third-party orders through its own network while other orders use seller-managed arrangements.
- Flipkart: JM Financial includes logistics or fulfillment fees among the platform’s monetization channels and contrasts its approach with other fulfillment structures.
A seller’s apparent commission rate is therefore only one part of the cost of selling. Storage, pick-and-pack, shipping, returns, advertising and payment-related services can materially change the net margin on an order.

Shopper and product positioning
Value and long-tail supply
Meesho’s relative advantage, as framed by JM Financial, is breadth at lower price points. Long-tail supply means many niche or less standardized products rather than a narrow catalog of heavily stocked national brands. This can appeal to shoppers who prioritize price and variety over uniform packaging or premium brand access.
Convenience and branded assortment
Amazon and Flipkart are positioned in the report as more convenience-oriented, with stronger emphasis on branded supply. Convenience can include predictable delivery, familiar brands, standardized product information and a more consistent post-purchase experience. It does not mean every item on either platform is branded or that value shoppers are excluded.
These are strategic tendencies, not customer rules. Category, city, seller quality and delivery availability can matter more than the platform’s overall positioning for a specific purchase.
Why GMV and reported revenue should not be mixed
GMV measures the value of goods transacted through a platform, subject to the particular company’s definition. Reported revenue measures what the company recognizes under its accounting policy.
For Meesho, Marketplace revenue from fulfillment, advertising, seller insights and related services is not the same as the full value of merchandise sold. For Amazon, first-party product sales are recorded gross, while third-party sales generally contribute only Amazon’s net service share. A marketplace with lower reported revenue can still facilitate substantial merchandise volume.

The same caution applies to comparisons across periods and geographies. Meesho’s investor-relations page identifies headline scale measures for the twelve months ended June 30, 2026, but no matched Amazon India and Flipkart basis is established here. Meesho’s prospectus contains quantitative information through 2025, while Amazon’s 2025 Form 10-K is global. Those figures should not be placed in one table and treated as directly comparable.
What this means for sellers
Choosing between fee structures
A seller should compare total contribution per order, not just the advertised commission.

- Start with the selling price and expected return rate.
- Subtract product cost, packaging and seller-paid shipping.
- Add marketplace charges for fulfillment, payment processing, advertising and other services.
- Include discounts or promotions funded by the seller.
- Calculate the remaining contribution after returns, cancellations and customer support costs.
Meesho’s zero-commission positioning may be attractive for a seller whose economics are highly sensitive to a percentage fee, but paid logistics or advertising can still reduce the final margin. Amazon and Flipkart may charge more visibly through seller or commission fees while offering different fulfillment and demand-generation services.
Choosing based on product type
- Lower-priced, unbranded or highly varied products may fit Meesho’s value-oriented positioning.
- Branded products that benefit from standardized listings and convenience-led demand may fit the positioning JM Financial describes for Amazon and Flipkart.
- Products with repeat demand or predictable volume may justify paid fulfillment or advertising on any platform, but the decision requires an order-level profitability calculation.
What this means for shoppers
Platform labels do not guarantee the quality of a particular listing. Compare the seller, specifications, delivery promise, return terms and total checkout price. A lower listed price can be offset by shipping, shorter return windows or inconsistent product information; a branded listing can cost more without being the best value for a specific need.

The business model helps explain why the same product may appear with different delivery options, seller fees embedded in price, or promotional placements across platforms. It does not by itself establish that one platform is always cheaper, faster or safer.
How strong is the evidence for each comparison?
The evidence is not equally detailed across the three companies.
- Meesho: Its investor-relations materials and prospectus support the Marketplace and New Initiatives segmentation, service-based revenue description and warning that revenue is not GMV. The prospectus’s quantitative period ends in 2025, so later policies may evolve.
- Amazon: Its 2025 Form 10-K is an SEC filing and provides the clearest statement of gross product sales versus net third-party service sales. It describes Amazon globally, not a standalone India operation.
- Flipkart: The January 8, 2026 JM Financial report supplies the most direct three-way framing, including its view of Flipkart’s commission, logistics and advertising economics. That is analyst interpretation and should not be treated as audited company guidance.
Because the periods, entities and definitions differ, there is no verified, directly comparable three-company statistic in this comparison. Claims about relative positioning are more defensible than claims that one platform has a specified lead in revenue, margin or order volume.
A practical framework for comparing any marketplace
When a platform changes its fee schedule or launches a new service, use these questions:
Recommended Free Tools
- Who owns the inventory? Ownership determines whether product sales are likely to be recorded gross and who carries stock risk.
- What exactly is the platform charging for? Separate commissions from fulfillment, shipping, advertising, subscriptions and seller software.
- Who controls fulfillment? Identify whether the seller, the platform or a logistics partner stores and delivers the order.
- Which products and shoppers are prioritized? Look at actual category visibility and delivery coverage rather than relying only on a slogan.
- What metric is being quoted? Ask whether it is revenue, GMV, orders, users, or a twelve-month operating measure, and check the period and geography.
Using that framework, Meesho stands out as a service-monetized, value-oriented marketplace; Amazon as a hybrid retailer and marketplace; and Flipkart, in the available analyst framing, as a commission-led marketplace with stronger branded and convenience positioning.
