Some employers combine both functions. There is no single certificate or certification required for every U.S. job, so start by checking local postings, then choose training and a credential that fit the work you want.
What medical billers and coders do
Medical coding
Coders review health records and assign standardized codes to documented diagnoses and services. Accuracy depends on understanding documentation, medical terminology, anatomy, and the applicable code set.

Medical billing
Billers handle the claim and reimbursement side: preparing or submitting claims, applying payer rules, tracking claim status, and helping resolve denials. Some roles include coding tasks, but billing is not simply another name for code assignment.

Its occupational category is broader than a single medical coder or biller job title.

How to get started
- Build the foundations. Study medical terminology, anatomy, health-record basics, classification systems, and careful documentation. BLS says certificate and associate-degree programs commonly cover terminology, health-data standards, and classification and coding systems.
- Check job postings in your area before paying for training. BLS says a postsecondary certificate is typical for medical records specialists, but some positions accept a high-school diploma and healthcare experience, while others may ask for a degree. Employers may prefer certification or expect a new hire to earn it after starting. Requirements vary by employer and role.
- Choose the work you want to do. For physician or outpatient coding, investigate the CPC credential; for claims and reimbursement work, examine the CPB; for an early-career coding credential, review AHIMA’s CCA requirements. These are examples, not an exhaustive list or endorsements. Ask target employers which credentials they recognize.
- Verify current exam requirements before buying materials or scheduling. Check eligibility, exam format, permitted resources, and required code books on the credential body’s site. Code-set versions also depend on the effective date for the encounter or discharge.
- Budget for the whole route. Include foundational instruction, exam preparation, books, exam fees, and any ongoing membership or continuing-education obligations. Confirm current costs directly with the credential organization before committing.
- Plan for experience if your chosen credential has an apprentice designation. AAPC describes a CPC apprentice designation and a route involving two years of qualifying on-the-job coding experience to remove it, with alternatives and exceptions. Verify its current policy before making a career plan.
How the main credential routes differ
Credential names can sound interchangeable, but their emphasis and entry requirements differ. Use the comparison as a shortlist, then check the latest requirements and local employer preferences.
| Route | Best fit to investigate | What the organization says | What to compare |
|---|---|---|---|
| AHIMA CCA | Early-career coding | A high-school diploma is required. Coding experience or preparation in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, ICD diagnosis and procedure coding, and basic CPT coding is recommended, not required. AHIMA describes a process covering eligibility, preparation, application and scheduling, and maintenance. | Employer recognition, current required books, preparation costs, exam format, and recertification requirements. |
| AAPC CPC | Physician and outpatient coding | The exam covers CPT, HCPCS Level II, and ICD-10-CM. AAPC also describes compliance, payer rules, and reimbursement knowledge as part of the credential’s scope. | Target work setting, current exam format and materials, training costs, apprentice status, and maintenance obligations. |
| AAPC CPB | Billing and reimbursement | AAPC says the credential covers insurance plans, the claim lifecycle, reimbursement, rules and regulations, denial resolution, and some coding. | Whether a target role centers on claims and revenue-cycle work rather than code assignment, plus current exam and training requirements. |
A course-completion certificate and a professional certification are not the same thing. Neither one guarantees employment, and the sources do not establish a universal U.S. license requirement for all billing or coding jobs.

Choose current coding books and references
Code books and official code files are date-sensitive. CMS publishes official ICD-10-CM diagnosis and ICD-10-PCS inpatient procedure materials with periods of applicability. For example, CMS lists FY 2027 ICD-10-CM materials for encounters from October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027, and an FY 2027 ICD-10-PCS update for discharges from October 1, 2026 through March 31, 2027. Select the release that applies to the work, and check CMS for updates. CMS ICD-10 code files and guidelines

What the work pays and the outlook
BLS reported a median annual wage of $51,140 for medical records specialists in May 2025. It projected 8% employment growth from 2025 to 2035 and about 14,000 openings per year on average over that period. These are U.S. national figures for the broader medical records specialists category, not a salary promise or a precise forecast for every coder or biller. State, metro area, employer, setting, experience, and job duties can all affect individual outcomes. BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook: Medical Records Specialists

AAPC’s Official 2026 CPC Certification Study Guide is designed as a review resource for a specific exam, not as a standalone beginner introduction to coding. AAPC says it covers anatomy, terminology, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS Level II, CPT, modifiers, and exam practice. If you have not built the foundations yet, begin with appropriate instruction; if CPC is your intended route, compare the guide’s edition with the current exam requirements and book list before buying.
