Why is McDonald’s closing the standalone stores?
McDonald’s framed the decision as a transition from the standalone pilot to beverage testing within its U.S. restaurant business, saying it had learned from the CosMc’s test. The cited announcement and coverage do not establish that losses, weak demand, or operational problems caused the closures. The company did not identify specific drinks or restaurants for the next test in its May announcement.

The app was slated for discontinuation as part of the 2025 wind-down. Separately, McDonald’s said CosMc’s-inspired flavors would inform a beverage test at U.S. McDonald’s restaurants. That was a plan to test flavors, not a promise that the CosMc’s menu—or any named drink—would remain available after the standalone locations closed. The 2025 sources do not establish current app functionality or drink availability.
