Mazda plans to pair a new 2.5-liter gasoline engine, SKYACTIV-Z, with its own hybrid system in the next-generation CX-5, which the company targets to introduce by the end of 2027. That is a development target—not confirmation of a sale date in every country. Mazda has not yet published final power, fuel-economy, price, or market-by-market availability figures for the vehicle.
What Mazda plans for 2027
In its March 2025 Multi-Solution Briefing, Mazda described SKYACTIV-Z as a 2.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine under development. The company plans to combine it with a proprietary hybrid system in the next-generation CX-5, targeted for introduction by the end of 2027. Mazda Motor Corporation’s March 2025 briefing sets out the company’s plan, but does not establish when the vehicle will reach dealerships in individual markets.
“By the end of 2027” is therefore best read as Mazda’s target for introducing the next-generation CX-5, not as a guaranteed on-sale date everywhere. The cited materials do not specify a launch country, pricing, trims, or a detailed rollout schedule.
What SKYACTIV-Z is designed to do
Mazda says SKYACTIV-Z is intended to balance fuel economy with driving performance while meeting stringent emissions requirements. Its stated targets include Euro 7 in Europe and LEV4 and Tier 4 in North America. Those are engineering goals, not evidence that a production engine has already met certification requirements.

What “in-house hybrid” means—and what remains unknown
Mazda says it intends to use its proprietary hybrid system with SKYACTIV-Z in the next CX-5. This signals that Mazda is developing a hybrid pairing as part of its own powertrain strategy. The cited announcements do not disclose the hybrid’s mechanical layout, battery capacity, electric-only range, or how much propulsion comes from the electric motor.

How the CX-5 plan fits Mazda’s wider strategy

Combustion technology beyond the CX-5
Mazda says combustion improvements developed for SKYACTIV-Z will also be applied to inline-six engines for its large-product range and inform a roadmap for rotary-engine emissions development. The briefing also says the company may consider applying elements of its hybrid system to large-platform products. The inline-six work and rotary-engine roadmap are part of the stated technology direction; possible hybrid applications to large platforms are only under consideration.
A separate battery-EV program
Mazda’s strategy materials also describe an in-house battery-electric vehicle planned for 2027 on a dedicated EV platform. A plug-in-hybrid derivative is under consideration, not confirmed as a product plan. Mazda Motor Corporation’s 2025 briefing estimates that its EV development approach could reduce development investment by 40% and development workload by 50% compared with its conventional development process. Those estimates concern the planned EV’s development approach, not SKYACTIV-Z fuel economy, cost, or performance.
