A stronger U.S. dollar is often treated as a headwind for Bitcoin and other risk assets. Matt Dines sees a possible exception: when the dollar and Bitcoin rise at the same time, he interprets the pairing as evidence that capital may be moving toward a new, U.S.-centered financial system. That is a market interpretation—not an established rule that a rising dollar causes Bitcoin to rise.
Why does Matt Dines see a rising dollar as bullish for Bitcoin?
In an October 12, 2026 report, TokenPost said Dines, chief investment officer of Build Asset Management, viewed “DXY up, Bitcoin up” as a positive signal. His reported thesis is that dollar strength could reflect capital shifting out of an older offshore dollar system and toward a U.S.-centered financial sphere. In that framework, Bitcoin rising alongside the dollar suggests the move is not simply a flight from risk into cash; it may indicate that both assets are benefiting from a broader change in capital flows.

The claim is best understood as Dines’s reading of a market signal, not a settled economic law. TokenPost attributed the argument to an October 12 interview with Bitcoin Magazine, but the interview itself is not directly available in the reviewed sources. The report also says Dines did not describe the situation as a full dollar squeeze. That distinction matters: dollar strength can arise for different reasons, and its effect on Bitcoin depends on the forces behind it.

The U.S. Dollar Index, or DXY, measures the dollar against a basket of six currencies: the euro, British pound, Japanese yen, Canadian dollar, Swedish krona and Swiss franc. It is not a measure of the dollar against Bitcoin. A rising DXY means the dollar is gaining relative to that basket; it does not by itself reveal why the dollar is strengthening or what Bitcoin should do next. Leverage Shares’ June 30, 2026 explainer describes the index and compares its historical relationship with Bitcoin.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Can the dollar rise while Bitcoin falls?
Yes. A stronger dollar can reflect tighter financial conditions, demand for safe assets, or pressure to obtain dollar funding. Those conditions can weigh on Bitcoin: investors may prefer cash or bonds, and tighter liquidity can reduce appetite for volatile assets. Bitcoin also does not pay interest, so higher returns available on cash or bonds can make holding it less attractive to some investors.
These are possible mechanisms, not universal explanations. DXY alone cannot tell an investor whether dollar strength comes from a funding squeeze, a shift in relative currency demand, or another cause. Nor can it isolate Bitcoin’s own drivers, which may include flows and market forces unrelated to the dollar.

What does the historical relationship show?
The dollar–Bitcoin relationship has changed over time. Leverage Shares’ comparison says the two moved together in 2016, 2019 and 2024, while they were negatively related in 2022. Its article describes a 26-week rolling correlation—a measure that tracks how two assets have moved together over a changing six-month window—and says the relationship changes direction. It does not provide numeric correlation readings in the reviewed text, so the examples should not be treated as a quantified forecast or a pattern that will necessarily repeat.

The historical comparison also does not validate Dines’s specific October 2026 signal. It shows that co-movement can happen, not that it has a stable cause or reliable power to predict Bitcoin’s next move. How should investors interpret “DXY up, Bitcoin up”?
Treat it as a signal Dines watches, then look at the surrounding conditions rather than drawing a conclusion from DXY alone. The key questions are whether Bitcoin is rising over the same period, whether financial conditions appear to be tightening or easing, and whether the dollar’s move looks like a broad currency shift or stress-driven demand for dollar liquidity.
- Both DXY and Bitcoin rise: This matches the pattern Dines reportedly views as positive, but it does not establish that dollar strength caused Bitcoin’s gain.
- DXY rises and Bitcoin falls: That is consistent with the conventional headwind story, such as tighter liquidity or a move toward safer assets, but the index alone does not prove the cause.
- The relationship changes over time: The historical examples show why a fixed rule based on the two prices is unreliable.
Dines has discussed dollar liquidity and Bitcoin’s place in a changing monetary system in a separate episode of What Bitcoin Did. That broader discussion provides context for his macro framing, but it is not independent evidence that the specific DXY pairing forecasts Bitcoin prices. For additional historical context on dollar strength and liquidity as macro factors, see Jameson Lopp’s hosted Bitcoin Value Drivers paper; it is older analysis, not current market evidence.

Is a rising dollar always bad for Bitcoin?
No. A rising dollar can coincide with Bitcoin gains, as Dines’s interpretation highlights, or with conditions that pressure Bitcoin, as the conventional counterargument holds. The direction of DXY is only one observation. The evidence cited here does not establish a dependable trading rule, a causal link, or reliable forecasting power for the October 2026 signal. It is a way to frame a market question—not a stand-alone basis for an investment decision.
