On July 1, 2024, Matrix Partners kept its name in the United States while its India affiliate became Z47 and its China affiliate was reported under the English name MPC. The firms said the update clarified their regional identities and longstanding operational independence; it does not, on the available evidence, establish a legal spin-off or ownership change.
What changed on July 1, 2024?
Matrix announced that organizations operating under the Matrix name in the United States, India and China would complete a renaming and organizational update effective July 1, 2024. The U.S. firm retained Matrix Partners, the India operation adopted Z47, and contemporaneous reporting described the China affiliate’s new English name as MPC. TechCrunch’s July 2024 report described them as entities operating under the Matrix name, a distinction that does not itself establish their legal relationship.
| Region | Name in the 2024 announcement | What current public information says |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Matrix Partners retained its name. | The firm’s website describes it as an early-stage venture-capital investor investing from idea through Series A. Matrix Partners |
| India | Z47 | Z47 said existing Matrix Partners India fund operations and its early-stage, founder-focused strategy would not change. Z47’s announcement |
| China | MPC in English; the Chinese name was reported as 经纬创投. | The firm’s current website uses MPCi and describes a China-focused early-stage and early-growth investment strategy. The site says it manages over RMB 70 billion, an undated, self-published figure. MPCi |
Why did the affiliates change their names?
Matrix said the update was intended to make the regional teams’ identities clearer, reflect local market dynamics and support competing in their respective markets. A statement from Matrix reproduced by TechCrunch said each team’s leadership had “operated with separate decision-making and separate back offices from inception.” That is Matrix’s description of its operations, not an independent finding about corporate structure.
What did Z47 say would happen to its India funds?
Z47 said: “There will be no change to the operations of existing Matrix Partners India funds or our early–stage and founders focused strategy.” This is the affiliate’s assurance about the rebrand, not independent verification of how each fund subsequently operated. As scale context, The Economic Times reported in 2023 that Matrix Partners India’s fourth fund reached a final close of $550 million after an original target of $450 million. That fundraising figure does not show that the name change altered fund operations. The Economic Times
Does “distances from” mean Matrix legally separated from the affiliates?
Not on the evidence available here. The 2024 announcement and contemporaneous coverage support describing a name change and an organizational clarification. Matrix and Z47 described separate decision-making and back offices, but those statements do not prove a legal spin-off, a transfer of ownership, or the affiliates’ precise legal status. The current U.S. and China websites identify their respective firms and investment focus; they do not establish how the entities are legally related today.

The names refer to different dated contexts: 2024 coverage called the new English name MPC, while the China firm’s current website uses MPCi. The site’s current branding should not be substituted for the name reported at the time of the announcement. The reports also said the Chinese name remained 经纬创投.
