MathGPT.ai’s “over 50 institutions” expansion was an announced fall 2025 rollout, not a verified institution-wide deployment count. TechCrunch reported that the AI math-tutoring platform had piloted with 30 U.S. colleges and universities and was expected to reach more than 50 schools. In April 2026, MathGPT.ai said it was powering 1,200 courses across 150 higher-education institutions—a substantially larger, but self-reported, figure.
What MathGPT.ai is
MathGPT.ai, operated by GotIt! Education, is more than a general-purpose chatbot prompted to solve equations. It combines a conversational math tutor with course and assignment management, instructor-authored or textbook-linked content, automated grading, and learning-management-system integrations. The company positions it as an instructor-led platform for higher education (MathGPT.ai).
Its stated purpose is to help students work through mathematics without routinely handing them a completed answer. Instructors can decide where the tutor appears, how much help it provides, and whether an assignment permits AI assistance.
What the “over 50 institutions” announcement meant
On August 28, 2025, TechCrunch reported that MathGPT.ai had completed a pilot involving 30 U.S. colleges and universities and was preparing for use by more than 50 institutions in fall 2025. Penn State University, Tufts University, and Liberty University were named among participating schools, but that wording does not establish institution-wide adoption at any of them (TechCrunch).

The announcement described a planned expansion. It should not be read as proof that every school had deployed the product across all departments or that all expected enrollments had occurred by the publication date.
The newer company figure
MathGPT.ai’s April 2026 product announcement says the platform was powering 1,200 courses across 150 higher-education institutions. That is a first-party claim, not an independently audited market statistic (MathGPT.ai platform update). The 2025 and 2026 figures may also use different definitions of “institution,” “using,” or “powering,” so a precise growth rate cannot be calculated from them.
How the tutor works
- A student submits a question or opens a problem in an assigned course.
- The tutor responds conversationally, usually with a concept check, an intermediate step, or a question about the student’s reasoning.
- Rather than immediately displaying a final answer, it is designed to guide the student toward one.
- Instructor settings determine the available help, assignment access, and permitted attempts.
- Students can use separate practice questions that do not affect the course grade, where the instructor enables that option.

The April 2026 announcement lists Socratic, Restricted, and Guided Study modes, plus a formula editor intended to recognize algebraically equivalent answers and expanded graphing tools.

What “cheat-proof” does—and does not—mean
“Cheat-proof” is MathGPT.ai’s marketing label, not an independently established technical guarantee. In practical terms, the design aims to suppress direct answer delivery inside its own tutor interface. It does not secure a student’s entire learning environment.
- The system is intended to ask questions and provide incremental guidance rather than routinely output a completed solution.
- Instructors can restrict or permit access on particular assignments.
- Courses may require students to show or upload work for review.
- The platform includes guardrails and warns that AI responses can be wrong.
A student can still consult another AI service, a phone, a shared-answer site, or a human tutor. A strict answer-suppression policy can also frustrate legitimate learners who need a worked example, especially when prerequisite knowledge or accessibility needs make a purely guided dialogue difficult. The most accurate description is guided tutoring with instructor controls that can reduce direct answer retrieval within the platform.
What instructors receive
Course and assessment workflow
- Assignment generation from uploaded textbooks and other learning materials.
- Automated grading and configurable attempt limits.
- Instructor controls over tutor availability.
- Unlimited, ungraded practice questions where enabled.
- Optional image uploads of student work for instructor review.
Integration and accessibility
TechCrunch reported integrations with Canvas, Blackboard, and Brightspace, along with screen-reader compatibility, audio mode, and closed captions (TechCrunch). The April 2026 announcement emphasizes additional LTI and LMS integration tiers and an Instructor Preview mode. Those capabilities and licensing terms should be confirmed for the specific campus deployment.

Subjects
2025 coverage described college-level algebra, calculus, trigonometry, and related mathematics. The company said it planned to expand toward chemistry, economics, and accounting; that forward-looking statement is not proof that those subjects are fully available today. The broader Gelato platform describes a move toward subject and skills-based learning, which is different from a current MathGPT.ai course catalog.
What remains unproven
Learning outcomes
MathGPT.ai has promoted company-reported usage figures, including more than 250,000 tutoring sessions, a claimed 60% increase in accuracy after 10 sessions, and a claimed 75% increase in completion after one hour (MathGPT.ai LinkedIn post). The available material does not provide the sample, control group, definitions, course context, or evidence that gains persisted after the tool was removed. Those numbers should be treated as marketing claims, not proof of causal learning effects.

The product page separately says it was refined using insights from nearly half a million tutoring sessions across hundreds of higher-education institutions (MathGPT.ai AI Tutor). That is a product-development claim, not a peer-reviewed evaluation.

Accuracy and hallucinations
TechCrunch reported executive statements that the company had identified five hallucinations in its first year, one in its second, and none during the period discussed, with human annotators reviewing content. These are not independently verified error-rate measurements. A tutor can avoid displaying a final answer and still teach an incorrect method. Formula equivalence, graph interpretation, notation, domain restrictions, units, and word-problem assumptions all require testing. Human review remains important for high-stakes grading and disputed answers.
Security, privacy, and accessibility questions
The company has described its product as ADA compliant, and its April 2026 announcement says it achieved ISO 27001 and TX-RAMP certifications (MathGPT.ai platform update). None of those statements, without scope and current documentation, establishes zero privacy, accessibility, or security risk.
Before signing, an institution should request:
- A privacy policy, data-processing agreement, FERPA terms, retention and deletion rules, and subprocessor list.
- A clear answer on whether student prompts are used to train models.
- An accessibility conformance report or VPAT covering keyboard, screen-reader, caption, audio, and graph experiences.
- The certificate scope and validity dates for ISO 27001 and any TX-RAMP authorization.
- Incident-response, breach-notification, export, and account-termination commitments.
Cost and implementation questions
TechCrunch reported a historical paid option of $25 per student per course on August 28, 2025, alongside a free option. That price should not be assumed current. The current homepage advertises “low and no cost options” but does not publish a precise price in the available material (MathGPT.ai).

Total cost can include LMS integration, faculty onboarding, content conversion, textbook licensing, support, contract minimums, and the staff time required to review generated problems and tutor responses. Automated grading may reduce routine work while increasing the need for configuration, appeals handling, accessibility checks, and error audits.
Buyer checklist
- Can the tutor be disabled for selected graded assignments?
- Are practice and assessment modes separately configurable?
- What prompts, attempts, hints, uploads, and revisions are logged?
- Can instructors override grades and regrade equivalent mathematical expressions?
- How are partial credit, proofs, units, graphs, and unconventional notation handled?
- What are the active-student counts, paid-institution counts, and average courses per institution behind the 150-institution claim?
- What are the exit, export, deletion, and support terms?

Bottom line for colleges and students
MathGPT.ai is a notable instructor-controlled approach to AI math tutoring, with assignment workflows, LMS connections, and settings intended to limit direct answer delivery. The “over 50 institutions” headline accurately describes the planned fall 2025 expansion reported at the time; the company now presents a larger April 2026 adoption claim.
Neither figure proves institution-wide use, learning effectiveness, or cheating prevention. Treat “cheat-proof” as a design objective, verify the platform’s error and accessibility performance with representative course material, and obtain current pricing, privacy, security, and deployment evidence before procurement.
