An effective elevator pitch explains what your business does, whom it serves, and why that matters—then gives the listener a natural reason to continue the conversation. It is not a miniature business plan or a promise of funding or sales. Build a flexible version around the audience and time available, support it with relevant facts you can substantiate, and finish with a useful next step.
What an elevator pitch needs to accomplish
A pitch is a concise introduction to your business and an invitation to a more focused conversation. It should help the listener understand the customer, the need, and the value you offer without making them work through jargon or a long list of details.
Start with a specific description rather than a broad label. The U.S. Small Business Administration’s Four Questions Every Effective Business Plan Should Answer recommends being able to explain the business clearly; that principle applies here too. “We help independent restaurants reduce food waste with weekly inventory planning” gives a listener more to grasp than “We’re a technology company.”
Common openings include “What do you do?” and “Tell me about yourself?” Toastmasters discusses these as prompts an elevator speech can answer in A Pitch With Purpose. Treat them as conversation starters, not a requirement to recite a biography.

Choose the length for the moment
There is no single mandatory duration. Toastmasters describes a business pitch as 30 to 60 seconds in 7 Tips to Elevate Your Elevator Pitch, and an elevator speech as roughly 20 to 30 seconds in A Pitch With Purpose. Those are context-dependent conventions, not evidence that one length works best for every audience.
Use the time the listener has actually offered. In a brief introduction, state the business, customer, and value, then invite a follow-up. In a longer conversation, you can add a differentiator or evidence. SCORE’s Pitch Your Business worksheet raises additional preparation questions—including how the business earns money, who is on the team, why it began, and what the founder wants from the listener—but a short pitch should include only what serves its purpose.

Build the pitch around five elements
- Who you are and what the business does. Use plain language and name the product, service, or outcome.
- Whom you serve. Identify the customer or audience specifically enough that the listener can picture them.
- The need and your value. Explain the problem you address and what becomes easier, better, faster, or possible for that customer.
- A reason to believe you. Add a relevant differentiator, concise example, or evidence you can substantiate.
- A next step. Ask a question or suggest a follow-up that fits the conversation’s purpose.
This is a flexible framework, not a script. SCORE’s worksheet and Toastmasters’ guidance encourage founders to tailor the message, explain what is distinctive, and use evidence where it supports the point. Leave out details that do not help this listener understand the value or decide whether to continue.
Adapt the emphasis to the listener
The core business description can stay consistent while the problem, proof, and next step change. The distinctions below apply the audience-tailoring advice in SCORE and Toastmasters; they are useful choices, not a rigid prescribed formula.

| Listener | What to emphasize | Possible next step |
|---|---|---|
| Investor | The customer problem, who will pay, how the business earns money, relevant evidence, and the opportunity. | Ask whether the investor would be open to a follow-up about the business model or materials. |
| Potential customer | The customer’s practical problem and the benefit of your product or service, explained in familiar terms. | Ask how they handle the problem now or whether a short demonstration would be useful. |
| Prospective partner | The shared opportunity and why working together could benefit both sides or serve a common audience. | Suggest a conversation about a specific possible collaboration. |
Choose one main objective before you speak. Trying to secure investment, make a sale, explain the whole company, and recruit a partner in the same short pitch usually blurs the point. If the conversation turns in a different direction, adapt rather than forcing the prepared ending.
Use proof carefully
A meaningful statistic, concrete example, or verifiable result can make a benefit more credible. SCORE recommends using meaningful statistics, and Toastmasters’ Give a Sales Pitch With Purpose advises supporting claims with logic and evidence.

- DISTINCTIVE DETAILING: Rounded corners, sturdy weight front and back cover, and a full-page front exterior clear pocket to complement your polished presentation.
- ACCOMMODATING: Each pocket holds back-to-back sheets for times when a book-style presentation is preferred to a front page only display.
- ADDENDUM POCKET: Back cover includes a slanted clear poly interior pocket to hold extra documentation or materials
- CLASSIC LOOK: Black 0.375" spine, front/back covers with heat-welded seams for a polished lay-flat look to complement your work
- Use a number only if you can explain where it came from and what it measures.
- Choose proof that matters to this listener; a customer outcome may be more relevant to a buyer than a broad market claim.
- Do not imply that an estimate, goal, or anecdote is verified traction.
- Leave out market-size, funding, customer, or performance claims you cannot substantiate.
A short example can work when a statistic would be distracting: describe a real customer situation and how your offering helped, without exposing private information or claiming more than the example demonstrates. No broadly applicable statistic establishes that a particular pitch formula or duration increases fundraising or sales by a set amount.

Replace internal terminology and fashionable phrases with words a customer would use. “We automate appointment reminders for dental practices” is clearer than “We deliver next-generation engagement solutions.” Keep the sentence focused on what the business does and why the listener might care.
Best Value
Toastmasters’ 7 Tips to Elevate Your Elevator Pitch recommends simplicity, enthusiasm, originality, and finding common ground. Energy helps when it feels genuine; it does not require a rehearsed sales persona. Executive speaking coach Simon Bucknall, quoted by Toastmasters in A Pitch With Purpose, says: “People will rarely complain [about a short elevator speech] as long as you give enough information to move the conversation forward.”
Rehearse, revise, and keep the exchange open
- Write a flexible draft. Capture the business, customer, need, value, and one relevant proof point or differentiator.
- Say it aloud. Notice where you stumble, run long, or sound more formal than you do in ordinary conversation.
- Ask someone for feedback. Find out what they understood, what felt unclear, and what they would want to ask next.
- Revise and try it with different listeners. Keep the accurate core while changing the emphasis and next step for the situation.
- Listen after you deliver it. A pitch should open an exchange; respond to the listener’s question instead of continuing with a memorized speech.
Toastmasters recommends rehearsal, feedback, and efficient wording in A Pitch With Purpose. Rehearsal is for clarity and confidence, not word-for-word recitation. If the conversation becomes a longer sales presentation, Toastmasters recommends putting the key point early, supporting claims with evidence, ending with a call to action, and using simple visual aids in Give a Sales Pitch With Purpose.
