There is no official first-month revenue figure in the cited NetEase financial-results release. The widely reported number—about 1 billion yuan, or $136.4 million—is GameLook’s rough estimate, relayed by Game World Observer on January 9, 2025. What NetEase officially reported
NetEase’s February 20, 2025 financial-results announcement reported user milestones and chart performance, but the cited passage did not disclose Marvel Rivals’ revenue. The company said the game exceeded 10 million registered users within 72 hours of launch and had surpassed 40 million registered users by the announcement. It also said the title topped Steam’s global top sellers chart shortly after launch and saw another Steam chart surge after Season 1 arrived in January 2025. Registered users are not the same as concurrent players: the first measure counts accounts registered over time, while the second refers to people playing simultaneously. Nor can NetEase’s company-wide financial totals establish how much revenue this one game earned.

Is Marvel Rivals really free to play?
Yes. Marvel Rivals launched globally on December 6, 2024, as a free-to-play, 6v6 team-based PvP shooter. NetEase’s launch announcement listed Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, Epic Games Store, and the official website as distribution options. Free access applies to the playable experience, not every item a player might want. In its December 5, 2024 monetization diary, the development team said heroes, maps, and gameplay elements were free. How does Marvel Rivals make money?
The developers’ stated approach is to sell optional cosmetics rather than access to heroes or gameplay advantages. The monetization diary described LATTICE as a premium currency primarily obtained through purchase. It said UNITS could be exchanged with LATTICE and earned in limited quantities through the Battle Pass, achievements, and events. In the team’s words: “We will be charging for cosmetics that will provide only visual changes, with no stat bonuses or pay-to-win elements.”
The same December 2024 diary gave U.S. Steam examples of $0.99 for 100 LATTICE and $99.99 for 11,680 LATTICE. Those are dated, region- and platform-specific examples, not a reliable statement of current prices. The developers said cosmetics were the only paid content at that time; the live Steam listing also identifies the game as free to play and lists in-app purchases, online PvP, and cross-platform multiplayer.
