Indian stocks fell in early trade on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, after two sessions of gains. The Sensex was down 460 points at 72,599.05 and the Nifty had shed 164.80 points to 22,610.85, according to a PTI report published by DD India. These are early-session readings, not closing figures. The report cited higher crude prices and caution ahead of the Reserve Bank of India’s policy decision as market context, not as proven causes of the decline.

Where the Sensex and Nifty stood in early trade

The October 7 PTI report published by DD India put both benchmark indices below their previous closes. The figures capture early trade only; they do not show where either index finished the day.

Index October 7 early trade Previous close, Tuesday, October 6
Sensex 72,599.05, down 460 points, according to the PTI report published by DD India 73,067.81, up 685.34 points (0.95%)
Nifty 22,610.85, down 164.80 points, according to the PTI report published by DD India 22,776.10, up 220.35 points (0.98%)

Why markets were under pressure

The report pointed to a rise in crude oil prices and investor caution ahead of the RBI Monetary Policy Committee’s decision, which was due later on October 7. It also cited lower Asian markets and foreign institutional investor (FII) selling. Those details describe the backdrop reported at the time; they do not establish that any one factor caused the indices to fall.

  • Crude: Brent crude was reported 1.01% higher at USD 101.6 per barrel.
  • Foreign investor flows: FIIs sold equities worth Rs 2,961.30 crore on Tuesday, October 6, according to the report.
  • Policy uncertainty: The RBI decision was still pending when the early-trade figures were reported.

V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, said: “Brent crude is back above USD 101 and there are no signs of any reversal in FPI outflows. Domestic liquidity and expectations of good Q2 numbers are supporting the market. The focus of the market today will be on the monetary stance and the message from the RBI Governor,”

Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, said: “Geopolitical risks remain elevated, while crude oil prices have rebounded modestly from recent lows. WTI crude is trading near USD 90 a barrel, while Brent remains above USD 100. The Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee decision due later today is likely to be the key domestic catalyst,”

These are comments from market professionals quoted in the report, not statements by the RBI. The early-trade report does not establish the eventual policy decision.

Stocks named among the early movers

The report listed Titan, Asian Paints, Bharat Electronics, Maruti, Axis Bank and Mahindra & Mahindra among the laggards. Bajaj Finance and Bharti Airtel were among the gainers. It did not provide individual share-price moves for these companies, so the names indicate reported direction rather than the size of each move.
