On Monday, March 31, 2025, May corn futures rose 4 cents to $4.57¼ per bushel, while May soybean futures fell 8¼ cents to $10.14¾. Wheat futures also advanced, while reported livestock futures declined. The figures below are historical readings reported that afternoon—not current prices or cash-market quotes.
How the major crop futures moved

These are futures for the named delivery months, not local cash bids. The report described a mixed session: corn and all three listed wheat contracts gained, while soybeans lost ground.

What market participants said was shaping trade
Karl Setzer, a partner with Consus Ag Consulting, said traders were positioning ahead of the USDA Prospective Plantings and quarterly Grain Stocks reports, as well as month- and quarter-end. He said that positioning favored soybeans and wheat, which had recently faced the most selling pressure, and that soybeans also found support from interest in uncommitted acreage and strength in energy markets.
Setzer also pointed to building drought in the U.S. Plains as support for wheat. For corn, he cited active planting and competition from feed wheat. He described early pressure across contracts amid limited trader interest and unstable outside markets, which he said showed more signs of a stagnating U.S. economy. These were Setzer’s interpretations, not independently established causes of the session’s price moves.

Don Roose, president of U.S. Commodities, said the acreage report would be the first report on acres to set the tone for the next year, while the stocks report would help establish how strong demand had been in the first half of the year. The comments framed why traders were watching the reports; they do not establish what the reports ultimately showed.
